Our tester holds up a container of Ora Organics So Lean & So Clean Plant Based Superfood Protein

To prepare for this Ora Organic protein powder review, I went ahead and watched the “Shark Tank” episode featuring the brand; it ended with the owners leaving without a deal due to their belief that the brand was worth more than the sharks were offering. This made me instantly more interested in their product. Could it be one of the best vegan protein powders available?

The “Shark Tank” pitch showed how most supplements out there nowadays are rarely made from clean ingredients, but Ora Organic’s founders had the solution. Fast forward to now and our testers got the chance to try the brand’s USDA organic So Lean & So Clean Protein Powder to see if it’s as high-quality as its creators claim it to be.

Ora is a well-known brand with positive reviews. It’s a good option for those looking for a very clean, organic vegan protein powder.

What our tester says:

“There are zero clumps to speak of when mixing this protein powder, even with just water.”

A Quick Look at Ora So Lean & So Clean 2.0

We are able to enjoy the likes of So Lean & So Clean plant-based protein powder from Ora today thanks to a few young men who had a vision in 2014. One of these individuals was a chef who wanted to make not only plant-based eating, but plant-based supplements, something that could also actually taste good.

So, Ora formulated its ‌organic plant-based protein powder, along with other products such as collagen, using only clean ingredients that offer much more than protein. The vegan protein powder also contains a blend of organic superfoods and digestive enzymes for gut health that allow it to check more boxes than just supplementing protein intake.

Before You Buy

  • One serving is 2 scoops, but there are only 20 servings in the tub
  • Contains a greens blend for those who struggle with veggies
  • Prebiotics, but no probiotics present; so add some yogurt to those smoothies!

Is Ora Organic Protein Powder Worth It?

Considering Ora essentially doubles as both a greens powder and a protein powder with some prebiotics and antioxidants sprinkled in, it can offer a lot of value. It also has great macros, is high in protein, and safe for most allergies being gluten-free, dairy-free, and using clean ingredients with no added sugar or additives.

RELATED: Best Clean Protein Powder

However, that $2.50 per serving cost could be hard to swallow for those just trying to increase their protein intake on a plant-based diet. Therefore, Ora could be worth it to those who have a lot of dietary restrictions, but for people who are just hunting for the best protein powder without additives, there are cheaper options.

Great for:

  • People with a lot of allergies
  • Vegans who want to boost their protein intake
  • Individuals looking for additional ingredients in a protein supplement

Not recommended for:

  • People on a tight budget
  • Those who want a wide flavor variety
  • Individuals who want a protein powder to bulk up

Experience Using Ora Organic So Lean & So Clean

Our testers had a generally good experience using Ora’s protein powder for their post-workout needs. Their assessment of the flavor and solubility was a little shaky, but our team, in general, loved the level of third-party testing and a formulation that has a lot of extra ingredients to support wellness beyond just protein intake.

Price Per Serving

Ora Organic certainly has a lot going for it. However, the price per serving of $2.50 makes it one of the most expensive protein powders we’ve tested at GGR. So, we had to give it a 1-out-of-5 rating for price.

Formulation

Plant-based protein powder benefits are numerous, and we dug into the formulation of Ora Organic to see if it holds up. Overall, the formulation of Ora Organic Vegan Protein Powder is great, with our team rating it at 4.5 out of 5. However, we docked it a bit because certain ingredients’ dosages aren’t fully transparent in the blend. Even so, though, there’s a lot of good stuff to love.

There are only 130 calories per serving, but 23 grams of organic pea protein blended in with rice protein to make for a complete amino acid profile that contains all of the essential amino acids, despite being a plant-based protein powder.

That’s not all, though. There is also a blend of organic superfoods—including acai and turmeric for a hit of antioxidants. There’s also inulin, which is a type of fiber that belongs to a class of prebiotics. However, considering the blend is included in the protein blend, it’s not clear how many superfoods it actually contains.

That said, the vegan protein powder also contains digestive enzymes that Ora claims can help improve protein absorption and reduce bloat, two claims that are actually supported by science1. These digestive enzymes include amylase, neutral protease, lactase, lipase, and cellulase, which all collectively work to help the gut break down carbs, protein, fat, lactose and certain insoluble fibers.

Finally, the ingredients are USDA organic, and there are no artificial compounds such as artificial sweeteners. Instead, the plant-based protein powder is sweetened with organic monk fruit extract, which is good news for those on a mission to avoid any stevia aftertaste.

Taste and Solubility

Our very own protein powder enthusiast and expert product tester Anthony O’Reilly, CPT, CNC gave the Vanilla Chai flavor a 4 out of 5 for taste. “It tasted like something you’d get at a hipster café, which is to say that it wasn’t authentic chai, but rather ‘chai-flavored,’” notes Anthony. “Vanilla and cinnamon were definitely the dominant flavors and, though I like my chai to have a little more spice, I still enjoyed it.”

Amanda Capritto, CPT, CNC, another one of our testers, also enjoyed her flavor experience. “Definitely up there in terms of the plant proteins I’ve tried,” Amanda notes. “It’s nice that Vanilla Chai has such a unique flavor that it hides the grassy taste that is inherent to even the best pea protein powder.”

Amanda also weighed in on the solubility of the plant-based protein powder, which she rated at 3 out of 5. “There is a slight chalkiness to the texture and it leaves a weird film in my mouth afterward, but I’ve found that’s common with vegan protein.” Either way, do some test runs when blending this one into your protein shake, folks.

Side Effects

We gave a 5 out of 5 for this category. Though there are a handful of reviews that report some bloating with Ora protein powder, our testers didn’t experience any adverse effects while using it.

Third-Party Testing

Ora Vegan Protein Powder has a CoA available and seems transparent along with being free of dairy, GMOs, wheat, gluten, eggs, peanuts, soy, fish, shellfish, artificial colors, or flavors.

RELATED: Plant-Based Protein Powder vs Whey

The brand also works with the following laboratories:

  • Eurofins
  • JK BioScience Analytical Laboratories
  • American Testing Laboratories
  • Venture Laboratories

These labs are great at verifying potency and freedom from harmful ingredients such as heavy metals. However, they are not certified for sport by NSF or Informed Choice. So, we gave a 4-out-of-5 rating for third-party testing.

Legion’s Plant+ plant protein is made of a blend of pea and brown rice and contains 24-25 grams of protein per serving. Reviewers like the texture and taste, which for a vegan protein powder is much harder to come by.

What our tester says:

“This mixes easily with your standard shaker bottle, and I do think the flavor roster has a good bit of variety for different palates.”

At GGR, we’ve been a fan of Legion Athletics’ Plant+ protein and other high-quality products in the past. This is because, like Ora, Legion’s Plant+ is non-GMO, contains no added sugar, is gluten-free, and free of artificial ingredients and additives. Both products are also priced identically with similar grams of protein per serving.

However, Ora is sweetened with monk fruit extract instead of stevia and contains a blend of veggies, superfoods, prebiotics, and digestive enzymes that Plant+ just can’t offer. Even so, though, Legion’s plant-based protein powder offers more flavors and only requires one scoop per serving.

Customer Experience

If you’re unhappy with the product, all you have to do is submit a return form on the Ora website within 60 days of your purchase, and you can be eligible for a full refund. However, this policy only applies to your first purchase. It can take 5 to 10 business days for your refund to arrive.

Ordering Ora Organic So Lean & So Clean

Ora Organic So Lean & So Clean is not returnable on Amazon due to the retailer’s return policy on consumable goods. However, if you order from Ora’s website, there is not only the option to return the protein powder for a refund, but opportunities for discounts, as well.

For starters, you can save 15% by signing up for the subscribe-and-save option, which allows you to automate deliveries every one, two, or three months. If you order two or three tubs at a time, you can save 20% and 25%, respectively.

To top it off, there’s free two- to three-day shipping for subscription orders over $50, or standard orders over $75. Otherwise, standard three- to four-day shipping is $6.95, while two- to three-day shipping will run you about $9.95.

Customer Reviews

On Amazon, Ora holds a 4-out-of-5 average rating out of nearly 7,000 reviews. People on Amazon love the amino acid profile, solubility, lack of fillers, and high-quality ingredients. However, many consumers complain of the texture being chalky and that they experienced bloating after use.

On Ora’s official product page, it holds 4.7 out of 5 stars, on average, out of over 4,000 reviews. Again, people love the macros and addition of superfoods, but there are complaints of a chalky texture.

Final Verdict of Our Ora Organic Protein Powder Review

It’s not everyday you can find antioxidants, prebiotics, AND superfoods you’d spot in your favorite greens powder all in an organic pea protein supplement. These features, along with it being a great dairy-free alternative to whey for those who don’t consume animal products, make this a great supplement for vegans and those looking out for their general wellness (and even their gut health).

RELATED: Best Gluten-Free Protein Powder

That said, the protein and superfood blend is unclear on the specific amounts of certain ingredients, and it is very expensive. Despite the high cost, though, we’d say that the lack of ingredients like added sugar and stevia make it worth the price, depending on what you’re looking for in a high-protein supplement.
