Bottom Line

If you’re looking to add a workhorse of a treadmill to your home gym, we recommend the NordicTrack Commercial 1750. It’s one of the few treadmills that has decline training capabilities and is compatible with iFIT, one of the best training programs.

The NordicTrack Commercial 1750 is one of our team’s top picks for home treadmills. It’s built for running with the powerful 3.5 continuous horsepower motor, a 60-inch-long running surface, and both incline and decline training options.

The NordicTrack Commercial 1750 is also foldable, sturdy, and smart. The built-in touchscreen and interactive iFIT programming are where this treadmill really comes to life. The 14-inch touchscreen pivots and tilts for comfortable viewing on the treadmill as well as easy viewing off the treadmill. iFIT offers more than just treadmill sessions; you’ll have a library of on-demand workouts ranging from yoga and meditation to dumbbell workouts and cardio intervals.

RELATED: Best iFIT Workouts

Lindsay Scheele, GGR’s lead product tester and a certified personal trainer, tested the 1750 and called the monitor “beautiful.” She noted that it was sleek-looking, responsive, and easy to use, giving it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

woman running on nordictrack commercial 1750

During trainer-led treadmill sessions, you can take advantage of a hands-free workout experience with auto-adjust technology. The treadmill incline, decline, and speed will automatically adjust based on your trainer’s coaching and your prior performance.

For workouts on and off the treadmill, iFIT will track your progress on the home screen and keep track of any workout milestones. The app will also make suggestions for workout programs you might like based on what you’ve completed.

Lindsay rated the iFIT programming a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. “There is a huge amount of programming available through iFIT,” she commented. “It should fit almost any workout preference.”

One of the only things Lindsay didn’t like about the NordicTrack Commercial 1750 was its size. She rated it just 3.5 out of 5 stars for portability. While she was able to deadlift the deck to fold it up without any issues, she noted that the machine wasn’t easy to move around since it weighs over 300 pounds.

Our testers also measured the distance between you and the treadmill, helping you understand exactly how far you’ll have to reach to change the settings. We found that our tester was 27 inches away from the incline and speed buttons, 23 inches from the start/stop button, and 17 inches from the handrails.

We also measured the button responsiveness to ensure prompt responses to user input, and found that this treadmill was more responsive than most of the others we tested. It required just under 5 pounds of pressure before the console recognized a request to start or stop the machine or adjust the incline and speed settings.

If you’re curious about our experience testing this treadmill, be sure to check our in-depth NordicTrack Commercial 1750 review.

  • iFIT comes free for 30 days
  • Large running surface
  • Incline and decline training

Bottom Line

At an affordable price, the ProForm Pro 2000 is a great buy with notable specs, features and size for anyone looking to walk, jog or do some light running.

The ProForm Pro 2000 is one of our more budget-friendly picks when it comes to treadmills with smart technology. This treadmill won’t cost you more than $2,000, and you have the option to finance directly through the ProForm website for 0% APR for the first 12 months.

RELATED: Treadmill Financing: Expert Tips To Chip Away At Your Home Gym Costs

The ProForm Pro 2000 has a 60-inch running deck complete with ReBound Pro, the brand’s patented shock-absorbing system. The Pro 2000 also features a powerful motor and a 300-pound user weight capacity. Additionally, this ProForm treadmill comes with iFIT, which offers trainer-led treadmill workouts and auto-adjust technology.

GGR’s lead product reviewer and certified personal trainer, Lindsay Scheele, is a big fan of the iFIT programming. She rated it 5 out of 5 stars, saying, “The iFIT programming is one of my top picks, especially when it comes to treadmills. It’s got walking, it’s got hiking, it’s got intervals…there are so many classes to choose from.” Just note that while the ProForm 2000 comes with a 30-day free trial for iFIT, you have to pay about $39 per month for a family membership once the trial period ends.

A woman walking on the ProForm Pro 2000 treadmill on an incline

Using iFIT also gives you access to off-treadmill sessions like strength training and yoga. Although this treadmill doesn’t feature a tilt and pivot screen, if you want to do any floor training, you can log into the iFIT app on your phone or tablet and take your workout from the treadmill to the living room.

Lindsay pointed out that the 10-inch touchscreen is small, especially considering the treadmill’s price point of about $2,000. “I’ve used a lot of treadmills, and I prefer a 14-inch screen. Ten inches is kind of small, but it’s still an okay option,” she commented. She gave the monitor on the ProForm Pro 2000 4 out of 5 stars.

One word of caution from Lindsay: Since the machine weighs 262 pounds, the box the treadmill arrives in won’t be easy to move, especially if you have to carry it up or downstairs. Once assembled, though, it should be fairly easy to maneuver because there are dual transport wheels on the front. ProForm’s EasyLift Assist technology also allows most able-bodied individuals to fold the deck up or down with ease.

Ultimately, Lindsay rated the treadmill 3.5 out of 5 stars for portability.

Best Smart Treadmill for Beginners: Horizon 7.4 AT

Up to $100 off cardio products See Details

Product Highlights

  • Lifetime frame and motor warranty

  • Monthly payment plans available

  • QuickDial controls for speed and incline

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Large 22” x 60” running surface
  • Powerful motor for interval training
  • Bluetooth connectivity with external apps
  • Quiet and smooth belt operation

Cons

  • No built-in touchscreen
  • Heavy at over 380 lbs
  • May be too large for small home gyms
  • Might be overbuilt for those who just need a treadmill for walking

Bottom Line

The Horizon 7.4 AT offers great value with a powerful motor, roomy deck, and reliable build that supports interval training. While it lacks a fancy display, its performance features help it stand out amongst its competitors.

The Horizon 7.4 AT might not be exactly what you think of when we say smart treadmill because it does not feature a built-in touchscreen. However, we think the 7.4 AT deserves a spot on this list because it can connect via Bluetooth to popular third-party apps like Peloton. The Bluetooth technology with the treadmill also allows you to simultaneously connect your fitness apps in addition to a wireless heart rate monitor.

In fact, we gave the Horizon 7.4 AT 5 out of 5 stars for programming even though it doesn’t have built-in instructor-led classes. We like that you’re not locked into a specific service and can choose whichever one you prefer.

display panel on horizon 7.4 treadmill
Image of the Horizon 7.4 AT, which we have tested.

The thing that makes the Horizon 7.4 AT so smart is that it can transmit speed and distance metrics to several of the best workout apps. Running on the 7.4 AT means you’re not just following along with an app of your choice—you’re using a machine that can help you track your progress.

If you just want to use the machine and the handful of built-in programs the 7.8 AT offers, you have the option to do that, too. The treadmill will function just fine without any interactive programming.

The 3.5 CHP motor can handle everything from gentle walks to sprint intervals. Lindsay Scheele, the lead product reviewer here at GGR, gave the machine 4.5 out of 5 stars for durability and stability. “This is a sturdy treadmill. Even when I was using it at its top speed, I didn’t notice any shaking or wobbling,” she said.

Although the Horizon 7.4 AT might not feature automatic incline and speed adjustments, the console features a pair of upright handles with QuickDial controls. The controls allow you to rapidly change speed and incline with a swift roll of a dial rather than fumbling with buttons on the console. Lindsay rated the adjustment mechanisms 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Our tester, who is 5’11”, measured the distance to the various controls while using the treadmill. The main console is 13 inches away, and the armrests are 18 inches away, which is within easy reach. However, the drink holder is 24 inches away, so you may have to reach a little further for your beverage.

The buttons are responsive, and require about 3 pounds of pressure for the console to register a request from the user.

All that said, we still only gave the Horizon 7.4 AT 3.5 out of 5 stars for value. There are a lot of things we like about it, but with an MSRP of around $2,400, we do wish it offered a bit more. You can often find it for about $1,600 or less, though, which we think is a more reasonable price.

Pros

  • 3.5 HP motor supports heavy running

  • Incline ranging 0% to 15%
  • Weight capacity of 350 lbs
  • 4 transport wheels (most folding treadmills have 2)
  • Integrated Bluetooth speakers
  • USB port
  • Tablet holder
  • Armrest controls
  • Lifetime warranty on frame and motor
  • Low step-up height

Cons

  • Users report cushioning not as shock absorbing as others
  • Small and basic display

Bottom Line

What the Sole F80 lacks in technology, it more than makes up for in durability and performance. With a 3.5 horsepower motor and a 60 inch long running deck, the Sole F80 is a great option for dedicated endurance athletes.

Firstly, our expert product testers appreciate that Sole Fitness offers a lifetime warranty on the frame and motor for most of its treadmills, which is a breath of fresh air for anyone who owns a large piece of fitness equipment.

In addition to a high-quality treadmill warranty, the Sole F80 has some additional features that make it a durable machine for avid runners, including a powerful 3.5 horsepower motor and a 350-pound user weight capacity. It also has a 22-inch wide running deck versus the 20-inch width we usually see in treadmills.

Lindsay Scheele, GGR’s expert product tester who tested the F80, said she didn’t think the extra two inches was necessary. Still, she noted that it is a nice feature to have, especially for larger individuals or those who tend to move side to side when they run. She also said the machine felt stable when running at high speeds, giving it 4 out of 5 stars for durability and 4.5 out of 5 stars for performance.

woman walking on sole f80 treadmill

The Sole F80 is not only a durable treadmill, it also offers more tech features than most other products from Sole Fitness. Lindsay rated its features and conveniences 4 out of 5 stars. There’s a 10-inch touchscreen monitor, and the machine comes with built-in workout programs like HIIT, 5k, 10k, and fitness tests for military personnel. The Bluetooth capabilities allow you to integrate your phone or tablet with the Sole+ app, where you can access hundreds of free classes.

Lindsay also enjoyed the wireless charging pad on the console. “If you’re using your phone to play music or watch TV, this is definitely a handy feature,” she said.

Sole claims that the cushioning on the F80 reduces impact to the joints by 40%, but Lindsay didn’t think the cushioning was significantly different than other treadmills she’s used. She gave the ergonomics a score of 4 out of 5.

We had our 6-foot-tall tester measure the distance to the various controls and found that the armrests were 17 inches away, and the incline and speed paddles were 22 inches away. However, he said the console controls were over an arm’s length away, as he had to reach 30″ to reach the speed and incline controls, and 22″ to reach the start and stop buttons.

The buttons required exactly 5 pounds of pressure to respond to user input.

Bottom Line

The Bowflex 22 is a high-quality treadmill with impressive components that features an immersive training experience via the JRNY platform.

The Bowflex Treadmill 22 delivers a 60-inch-long running deck adequate for tall runners or folks with a long stride, plus incline training up to 20% and decline down to -5%. It also has Comfort Tech deck cushioning to dampen the impact running and sprinting can have on your joints, as well as interactive programming that supplies a virtual personal trainer in the comfort of your home gym.

We haven’t tested the Treadmill 22, but we did test the Bowflex Treadmill 10. The two have a lot of similarities. Our product testers especially enjoyed the comfortable running deck on the Treadmill 10 and were happy to see the same dimensions on the Treadmill 22. They gave the Treadmill 22 a score of 4.5 out of 5 stars for ergonomics.

Your purchase of the Bowflex Treadmill 22 comes with a one-year free trial of the JRNY app that you can access on the 22-inch touchscreen console. JRNY has on-demand fitness classes for both cardio and strength training, and scenic running options with Explore the World.

With JRNY, you can also stream videos and shows from other services like Hulu and Disney+, leading our reviews to rate the programming 5 out of 5 stars. Memberships for those streaming services are sold separately. However, it’s worth noting that the app overlays your workout metrics around the borders of your screen so you don’t have to toggle in and out of your show to track your progress.

We appreciate the 15-year frame and motor warranty on this treadmill, but we still gave it just 4 out of 5 stars for its brand policies. If you decide you don’t like the treadmill, you only have 2 weeks to return it. Most other brands have at least a 30-day return policy.

Product Highlights

  • Goes down to a -6% decline or up to a 40% incline

  • Speed range of 0-12 mph

  • 24" swiveling touchscreen

  • SmartAdjust technology automatically adjusts speed and incline levels during iFIT classes

  • Powerful 4.25 CHP motor

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Monitor doesn’t wobble even when running at top speeds
  • High-quality speakers
  • Large belt deck of 60″ x 22″
  • Lifetime warranty on the motor
  • 400-lb weight capacity
  • Monitor has streaming capabilities
  • Can create custom, simulated maps with Google Maps

Cons

  • Expensive at around $4,500
  • Handlebars are a little slippery
  • Cushioning could be better
  • High step-up height of over 13″
  • Weighs over 400 lbs in the box

Bottom Line

The new NordicTrack X24 Treadmill has an impressive incline/decline range of -6% to 40% and features an impressive 24-inch touchscreen monitor with high-quality speakers. It includes several conveniences, like water bottle holders and a cooling fan that adjusts automatically based on the intensity of your iFIT class. However, the $4,500 price tag is steep, and this large, heavy treadmill could be difficult to move around.

The NordicTrack X24 features an impressive range of incline and decline settings, allowing users to train at an incline as high as 40% or decline setting as low as 6%. This impressive range of settings earns the treadmill a strong 5-out-of-5 rating for customizations.

You can say goodbye to boring workouts, as the X24 is fully compatible with iFit, allowing you to stream live and on-demand workouts. The treadmill will automatically adjust your speed and incline based on the instructor’s guidance, but you can always turn this off.

GGR Everything Lead Reviewer Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC, tested this treadmill and was quite impressed with the features. In particular, she was impressed with improvements in the built-in speaker, which can be difficult to hear when running at high speeds.

She said, “You can hear the instructor and music very clearly, and I didn’t even have the speakers turned all the way up.”

Lindsay also noted that the screen is very durable, and she didn’t notice any wobbling or shaking, which is common with built-in screens.

The treadmill also has a lifetime warranty on the motor, which is something we rarely, if ever, see on other treadmills. This treadmill is expensive, but a lifetime motor warranty and financing options certainly increase the overall value, especially as a replacement motor can be quite expensive.

If you’re looking for a commercial-grade treadmill that’s durable and packed with smart features, the NordicTrack X24 is one of the best we’ve tested.

Best High-End Smart Treadmill: Peloton Tread

Good for: Runners who want to experience live and on-demand workouts from home

Peloton Tread

Peloton Tread+

GGR Score: 4.2

$1,200 off + 1 month free membership See Details

Product Highlights

  • Soft, cushioned treadmill
  • Tilting touchscreen
  • Can be powered via electric motor or manually
  • Incline up to 15%
  • 67-inch running deck

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Cushioned slat belt
  • 67-inch running space is well above the industry standard
  • 32-inch tilting touchscreen
  • Can be used as a manual treadmill in "Free Mode"
  • Adjustable incline up to 15%

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Weighs 455 pounds

Bottom Line

The Peloton Tread+ is a luxury cardio machine that features a cushioned slat belt, tilting touchscreen, and the high-quality interactive that made Peloton a household name. The downside: A very steep price tag.

Peloton is one of the top brands in at-home fitness and paved the way for at-home workouts with live sessions and on-demand studio classes. Peloton’s collection of classes covers everything from treadmill running to boxing to mediation.

The Peloton Tread offers a 59-inch running belt, a decent 3.0 CHP motor, a weight capacity of 300 pounds, and a max speed of 12 mph. The specs on the Peloton Tread compare to both the NordicTrack X22i and Bowflex Treadmill 22, but the Peloton app is where the real draw is—customers rave over the quality of the community, trainers, and programming.

Our product testers agree. In our Peloton app review, former GGR staff writer Caroline Lubinsky rated the programming 4.5 out of 5 stars. She praised the variety of classes available, the music selection, and the collections of both indoor and outdoor workouts.

peloton tread touchscreen

The Peloton Tread comes with a 23.8-inch touchscreen to navigate your next workout and view past workout metrics. The screen also comes with speakers built into the monitor. A friend of GGR named Dawn Chapman, who’s completed over 1,500 Peloton workouts, said the quality of the speakers helped create a boutique exercise experience. We rated the tech capabilities 5 out of 5 stars.

Additionally, if you’re an Apple Watch user, you can pair your device to the treadmill for automatic syncing of your workouts to stay on top of your fitness goals.

At just under $3,000, this isn’t a budget-friendly treadmill. You also have to pay about $44 per month for the Peloton All-Access Membership. The good news is that the cost of the machine includes delivery and assembly. There is no option for you to assemble the treadmill yourself.

We consider this both good and bad. It’s convenient for those who aren’t used to building big pieces of equipment, but it’s a drawback for people who are more handy and independent. For this reason, we couldn’t give it a perfect score for delivery and setup but still rated it 4 out of 5 stars in this category.

Other Smart Treadmills We Researched

  • NordicTrack 2450: This is an ideal option if you like the NordicTrack 1750 but want a bigger touchscreen.
  • NordicTrack X32i: This treadmill is very similar to the X22i but with a higher price tag.
  • ProForm Pro 9000: This treadmill did not make it to this list because it features similar specs to the Pro 2000, which has a more budget-friendly price point.

How We Picked and Tested

Not only did our expert product testers here at GGR want to deliver a curated list of smart treadmills ideal for home gyms, but we also wanted to explain the other factors we considered when selecting treadmills for this list:

  • Tech capability: For this list of best smart treadmills, our team wanted to make sure that you will have the option to not just connect your phone to built-in speakers. We wanted to choose treadmills that offer touchscreen displays, built-in programs, and the ability to collect your workout data.
  • Programming options: We wanted to give you treadmills that offer interactive workout programs and on-demand personal training experiences, either directly through the brand’s app or a third-party app.
  • Motor horsepower: This list is made up of treadmills with motors that can support running speeds because the stronger the motor the better performance you’ll get for continuous running.
  • Speed and incline: We thought that since this list is made up of smart treadmills, we’d better make sure they’re all capable of fast speeds and incline training, too.
  • Price point: You’ll see a range of prices from about $1,700 to over $3,000. We wanted to make sure this list represented which additional features come along with higher price tags.

Benefits of Smart Treadmills

Investing in a smart treadmill for your home gym can not only be fun, but it can also help keep you engaged in your progress and goals.

Personal Training at Home

Not only do apps like Peloton, iFIT, and JRNY offer workouts for you to follow along with, you have your very own personal trainer right in front of you the whole way—and one that can’t hear you cursing them out.

Interactive Programming

Interactive programming isn’t just about the personal training aspect. It’s also about the technology that gives you new workout suggestions based on your progression. Most of the top brands have apps that allow you to track your progress and interact with the app on your fitness goals.

Metrics and Workout Stats

A pretty cool feature of smart treadmills is the ability to track and transmit data from your workouts to your smartphone or tablet. Some treadmills can even connect to multiple devices, allowing you to track your heart rate through a wireless monitor while simultaneously tracking speed and distance metrics.

What to Look for in a Smart Treadmill

Here are some things to consider when shopping for a smart treadmill:

Programming

Do you want the ability to choose the app of your liking and that’s specific to your training style or do you like the idea of services like iFIT and Peloton? Before you make your purchase, it’s worth thinking about whether you want the freedom to pick a fitness app that you like or commit to the app your treadmill is set up to stream.

Bluetooth Connectivity

There are plenty of treadmills out there that are Bluetooth-enabled. However, I suggest reading the fine print to make sure you know exactly what you can do with that Bluetooth technology. For example, if you’re looking for a treadmill that can sync your metrics to any of the best fitness trackers or your phone, make sure the treadmill you want can do that. Some machines are only set up to use Bluetooth for the built-in speaker function.

Machine Capability

In addition to getting the technology you want from a treadmill, make sure you don’t sacrifice tech for the overall specs of the treadmill. Be sure you know that your treadmill can support your weight and the amount of running you want to do. We suggest at least a 2.75 horsepower treadmill motor to support frequent running. Additionally, if you’re on the taller side, make sure the running deck is at least 60 inches to give you adequate room for your full stride.
