Other Sauna Suits We Researched
Not every sauna suit we came across could make our final list. For those wanting to know all their options, here’s another sauna suit we tried and the reason it didn’t quite break into our top picks.
- FightHaus Contender Sauna Suit: We didn’t test this full sauna suit, but it’s highly rated amongst customers. However, inventory seems to be dwindling. As of this writing, only a few suits in size Small are left.
How We Picked and Tested Sauna Suits
After researching sauna suits from top brands and companies, we picked a variety of different sweat suits and hoodies to test out in forming our final list of the best sauna suits. We gave ratings between 1 and 5 for several categories according to our testing methodology. Let’s break down the different aspects of sauna sweat suits, and what the fitness experts and testers on our team were looking for while trying out these top options.
- Materials: We took a look at the materials used in the sauna suit, as the right material should be able to trap heat while being breathable, flexible, and durable. Top marks were given to flexible neoprene and nylon fabric. Another common fabric, PVC, is often avoided due to its long-held worry of being a possible carcinogen1 as well as harming the environment2.
- Construction and durability: In addition to the materials, we looked at the stitching and build of each sauna suit, noting any potential of seams coming loose or fraying.
- Ventilation: To prevent overheating, sauna suits can have ways to ventilate or regulate your core body temperature. Solutions can be as simple as having a more breathable fabric or a zipper to open up, but other suits can have lighter mesh areas to facilitate airflow.
- Fit: Sauna Suits should fit well, but will commonly be a little on the looser side to prevent any constriction (or tears) while in use. So this was a rating on how the sauna suit fit on our testers—if there was room for movement and if the size chart was helpful in determining the proper size.
- Adjustability: This was a rating on customization—basically, how easily can you adjust it to your needs or frame? We took a look at the available sizing options; if unisex, women’s, or men’s sauna suit sizing was available; as well as adjustment mechanisms like elastic waistbands with drawstrings, Velcro and elastic cuffs, or zippered tops, for example.
- Care: How easy is caring for your sauna suit? Depending on the material, you may have to hand wash and dry your suit, or the material may be safe for machine washing and drying.
- Value: Sauna suits can range from under $40 to $150 or more. Higher-priced sauna suits can be worth the cost, but should excel in the quality of the construction, durability, or functionality.
- Customer experience: We took a look at how easy or difficult purchasing the sauna suit was, return policies, financing options, and the ease of contacting customer service to make this score. Top scores had responsive customer service and at least 30-day returns.

Potential Risks of Sauna Suits
Before we get into how a sauna suit may benefit you, I’d be remiss to not discuss the safety concerns surrounding sauna suits. The National Collegiate Athletics Association3 (NCAA), for example, has banned the use of sauna suits for cutting weight after the deaths of three collegiate-level wrestlers4. Their deaths were linked to dehydration and overheating—the two largest risks of using sauna suits.
It’s very important to note that sauna suits aren’t for everyone. Most research and studies done on sauna suits observed healthy and active individuals who often participated in endurance sports and training. The team at Garage Gym Reviews highly recommends consulting a doctor before incorporating a sauna suit into your training. Because of the potential risks, we’d also say these aren’t for beginners, older adults, or children.
Benefits of Sauna Suits
Now that we’ve gone over the potential risks, let’s talk about the ways that a sauna suit can help benefit your workouts and training.
Can Supplement Body Fat Reduction
Don’t get me wrong; a sauna suit isn’t going to be a miracle weight loss machine. Most of the weight loss claims by brands amount to water weight lost after a session of sweating (which is why it’s a common tool for cutting weight for sports). Still, an October 2020 study5 found that the energy expenditure of participants increased while in a sauna suit, which led to an increase in calories burned.
The difference in calories wasn’t much—only 23 per workout. While that isn’t going to make a huge difference in weight loss or burning fat, the same study also notes that fat oxidation, or how your body breaks up fat stores, increased and continued for an hour after sauna suit usage.

Can Improve VO2 Max
There’s some research that shows sauna suits can potentially aid in improving your VO2 max. But what is a VO2 max? It’s a measurement of how efficiently your body consumes oxygen during exercise and workouts. More oxygen consumption during workouts leads to better performance; less oxygen consumption does the opposite.
A small 2017 study6 found that endurance-trained athletes were able to increase their VO2 max over a 14-day period, along with time trial performance and ventilatory threshold. The case study was small with only 14 participants, but the study still shows the potential to help athletes and fitness enthusiasts improve their performance.
Can Help Acclimate to Heat
Sauna suits have another benefit—that of acclimating to hotter temperatures and environments faster. A study in the Journal of Research in Exercise Physiology7 suggests that consistent use of a sauna suit during low- to moderate-intensity workouts can help people better acclimate to the heat with an earlier onset of body sweat, a lowered heart rate, and a decreased body temperature.

What to Look for in Sauna Suits
If you’re still looking at which sauna suit would be best for your needs and budget, here are a few of the major factors to consider.
Materials and Construction
The construction of a sauna suit is important for tons of reasons. Most notably, the material needs to be able to trap body heat, but also be durable and strong enough to allow for a user to freely move throughout their workout.
Most sweat suits will be constructed from an anti-rip or tear-resistant material. The most common materials used are neoprene and nylon, with polyester and PVC fabric also being used. PVC tends to be avoided now, however, as its disposal and burning has been shown to be harmful to the environment2.
Materials can also impact the care required for your sauna suit. Neoprene sauna suits are typically fine to run through a washer and dryer machine, while nylon and polyester suits will have to be air-dried. Still, other suits can only be hand washed. Be mindful of the material and how that’ll affect the care instructions.

Ventilation
Because of the risk of overheating, many sauna suits feature ways to ventilate and regulate heat. This can be as simple as having a quick zipper to pull down or up to cool off, or it can be more complex, such as having breathable mesh areas to help with airflow. Neoprene in particular is considered a more breathable material than nylon—although it still is capable of trapping heat.
Sizing
Most sauna suits have a variety of sizes available, but sizing may not be aligned with traditional sizing. I learned this myself with the two sauna suits I tested out. Being a competitive superheavyweight weightlifter, I’m a large guy and typically wear 3XL shirts and shorts.

However, using the sizing charts available, I realized for the suits I tested, I needed the 6XL suits. They fit fine, but I had to pay attention to the brand’s sizing chart to make sure I had the right size. Make sure to check the sizing charts available, and also read customer reviews to see how other users felt about sizing.

Cost
How much do you have in your budget for a sauna suit? The cost will be a factor, and it will also impact the type of suit you’re looking for. Fully neoprene suits are typically the best, but will also be pricier. Cheaper materials may not last as long, however. Make sure to factor in your budget, and also take note of financing options available.
Best Sauna Suit: FAQs
Do sauna suits really work?
Sauna suits do work…depending on your use for them. Many purported benefits, such as weight loss or detoxification, are over-exaggerated and under-researched. Sauna suits can help you sweat, which may be an effective way for an athlete to cut weight before a competition (with some risk of hyperthermia or dehydration), but the weight loss is water weight and therefore only temporary.
Still, small studies6 hint at the possibility for sauna suits to improve VO2 max by raising your body heat, and therefore improving athletic performance.

Is a sauna suit good for weight loss?
Sauna suits may help to burn body fat and increase energy expenditure5, but the amount of extra calories burned is negligible—23 according to one study. The best method for weight or fat loss is through regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet of whole foods; a sauna suit may be able to aid in weight loss, but won’t be the sole way to lose weight or lose body fat.
RELATED: How To Lose Body Fat
Is it OK to wear a sauna suit every day?
It’s not recommended to wear a sauna suit every day. Instead, two or three sessions each week between 5 and 20 minutes (depending on your experience) is more than adequate. More sessions than that each week can increase your risk of dehydration or hyperthermia, two of the biggest risks of sauna suits.
Because of that, we recommend consulting a doctor before using a sauna suit. Generally, we don’t recommend using a sauna suit at all for beginners, children, older adults, or anyone with chronic illness.
Should I wear clothes under a sauna suit?
Wearing clothes underneath your sauna suit may help wick away sweat more efficiently, but it can also trap heat more, increasing your body heat and potentially increasing your risk of hyperthermia. Regardless, if you’re using a sauna suit, make sure to stay hydrated and also be mindful of the time spent in the sweat suit.
