We test and review fitness products based on an independent, multi-point methodology. If you use our links to purchase something, we may earn a commission. Read our disclosures

Home gyms are changing. Rusty old equipment in a garage is no longer the norm, although we totally still love that vibe. The best smart home gym equipment has played a huge role in the shifting landscape of at-home fitness, as people are realizing it’s pretty dang cool to stream live workout classes from a high-tech device that tracks your reps and other stats.

We’ve put nearly three dozen models of smart exercise equipment to the test, from treadmills and bikes to rowing machines. During our testing, we analyzed factors according to a 5-point testing methodology, including:

  • Versatility: Can it be used for multiple workout types and be used by people of all fitness levels? At least two distinct workout types, like strength training and running, either through the machine itself or its software, is our benchmark for a 3-point score.
  • Ease of Setup: Technology can be frustrating, so we looked for equipment with user-friendly interfaces and installation. To earn at least 3 points, machines and devices can be set up in under one hour with just one person, or professional assembly is available for an additional fee.
  • Monthly Subscription: Is the monthly subscription cost worth it? Can you use the equipment without a subscription? To score 3 points, subscription prices must fall between $20 and $40 monthly. Anything more expensive earns 1-2 points, while anything less expensive typically earns 4-5 points.
  • Footprint: Can the machine fit in most home gyms? We gave 3-point scores to home gym equipment that can reasonably fit in a spare room or living room in an average single-family home (around 2,200 feet, per 2024 data1), with apartment-friendly and second-floor-friendly equipment earning higher marks.

We also consulted with Dr. Susie Reiner, PhD, an exercise scientist who specializes in sport technology and digital health at TheoryEx, about what to look for in smart gym equipment. This article was then reviewed by Raj Panchal, D.O., a specialist in Interventional Pain Management and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, to ensure medical accuracy.

In 2024, we helped nearly 143,000 athletes find their ideal home gym equipment across various strength and conditioning categories—smart home gyms included. So, if you’re looking to embrace the future of fitness, we’re confident that the following details can help you find the best smart home gym for your needs and goals.

The Tonal 2 is a complete smart home gym that offers versatility in a compact piece of equipment, but at a high price.

What our tester says:

“Although aluminum pulleys are a smoother, more premium component, the nylon won’t wear the cables down as much. So using nylon pulleys on the upgraded Tonal 2 is a pretty smart move.“

At a Glance

  • Up to 250 pounds of resistance
  • Strength, cardio, yoga, Pilates, HIIT, and more
  • Accessories available separately
  • Subscription required for full functionality

The Tonal 2 takes our top spot of smart home gym equipment because it’s designed to do it all—and it truly does. “It’s basically made to be an all-in-one home gym,” says GGR founder Coop Mitchell, who tested the original Tonal and also compared it side-by-side to this upgraded version. With the Tonal 2, several features have been added to push the all-in-one workout mirror further, like smoother pulley cables and an increase in the maximum weight.

Smart Features: 5/5

Coop Mitchell using the Tonal 2.0 for curls
Tonal has excellent progress-tracking features, and its technique analyses are stellar.

Versatility: 5/5

Anthony using the touchscreen of a Tonal Smart Home Gym Machine
Tonal has live and pre-recorded classes/programming in pretty much any category of fitness you can imagine.

Durability: 5/5

Coop adjusting the Tonal 2.0 arm
Neither Tonal hardware nor software has given our testers issues.

Why We Like the Tonal 2

Smart features is the testing category where Tonal 2 really, really wows. It earned a perfect 5-out-of-5 score, and Coop says, “The software is constantly improving. Every week brings new workouts, but also new features. Spotter mode and eccentric mode are fantastic and allow you to lift safely and increase the difficulty of the eccentric portion of the lift.”

The machine is also incredibly durable, even compared to the original, which was already quite robust. “Tonal has made some notable upgrades in its construction and processing speeds,” Coop says. “It also has stronger lock-pins and uses nylon pulleys instead of the aluminum pulleys of the original model. Although aluminum pulleys are a smoother, more premium component, the nylon won’t wear the cables down as much, so this is a pretty smart move.” He rates the construction a 4.5 out of 5.

You can lift up to 250 pounds of digital resistance with the Tonal 2—125 pounds per arm—which is an improvement over the original Tonal’s max resistance of 200 pounds. The processor is faster in the updated Tonal 2, too, which creates a smoother experience by adjusting weights faster.

Coop Mitchell, GGR founder

Alternatives

The downside? The Tonal 2 is not cheap. It costs about $4,300 for the machine alone, and you have to factor in the software subscription, too. At about $60 per month, we could only give the Tonal 2 a 2-out-of-5 rating for its monthly fee. The accessories bundle also costs $495 extra and comes with a yoga mat, foam roller, smart handles, smart bar, rope, and a nice workout bench.

To save on the machine itself, you could probably catch it for less during holiday sales, like Black Friday or with a Tonal coupon. Luckily, Tonal has partnered with Affirm to allow customers to pay over time. We still rate the value at 4 out of 5, since if you can swing it, it’s really the only equipment you need.

Of note, the Tonal 2 does require professional assembly, so you’ll need to carve out some time for that in your schedule.

Looking for something cheaper, but still smart as heck? Try the Speediance Gym Monster, which functions similarly to Tonal 2 (albeit with slower processing speeds) and retails for about $1,000 less.

Testing Breakdown

Tonal scored highly in categories like durability and versatility, but for the price, some customer policies (like a short two-year warranty and an extra cost for professional delivery), could be better.

If a personal trainer met AI, the result would be the online training program known as Tempo Move.

What our tester says:

As-is, the Tempo Move is one of the tiniest smart home gyms on the market, so it can fit easily into your living room or any other space. You do, however, still need a 6-foot-by-6-foot workout space for 3D Tempo Vision to capture your movement.

At a Glance

  • Simple but effective setup
  • Free weight-focused
  • Software includes excellent classes and form feedback
  • Packages start at just $500

I tested the Tempo Move for months in my tiny (I mean, really tiny) studio apartment in downtown Miami for several months. It was the perfect fit—literally—for my small space, and I appreciated the affordable price point for both the equipment and the monthly subscription. Despite its relatively low cost, it still delivers fantastic programming. This landed the Tempo Move as our top budget pick for smart gym equipment.

Portability: 3/5

Amanda kneeling on the ground next to Tempo Move, pointing to the product
The Tempo Move isn’t what I’d necessarily call super portable, but it’s easy enough to move around your home or take with you to a new abode.

Versatility: 4/5

Tempo Move change plates stacked on each other
You can do all sorts of workouts with Tempo’s adjustable free weights, and the subscription includes access to many different kinds of workout classes.

Durability: 5/5

Hand holding an empty loadable dumbbell handle
I never noticed unusual wear and tear on Tempo equipment, even after extended testing.

Why We Like the Tempo Move

Some background: The Tempo Move used to be the little sibling to the Tempo Studio. Since our original testing, the Studio has been discontinued, and the Move, in various package offerings, is Tempo’s only physical equipment for sale. But I’m not mad about that, because the Move is much more affordable and does pretty much the same thing, anyway.

It earns 5 out of 5 points for value, with the Starter Bundle costing just $504, plus the subscription cost of $39 per month. The latter just squeezes into our benchmark of $20 to $40 per month, earning a 3 out of 5 for subscription cost. Note that the cost of the equipment is bundled into monthly payments for the first year, making the price point even more approachable. For the Starter Bundle, you’ll pay $69 per month for the first 12 months, and then $39 per month as long as you keep the subscription.

Another win for the Tempo Move is dynamic programming, where it earns another 5 out of 5 points. I thoroughly enjoyed every Tempo fitness class I took, though I admit the instructors can be cheesy at times (but what group fitness instructor doesn’t have their moments, am I right?). The programming is easy to follow, and there are tons of options for different fitness goals. Plus, there are plenty of bite-sized classes under 30 minutes for busy people. Love that.

The Tempo Move is both small-space friendly and budget-friendly. I love that it utilizes free weights, which have incredible health and fitness benefits, with the structure of instructor-led programming and classes.

Amanda Capritto, CPT, CES, CF-L1, CNC, CSNC

Alternatives

It’s hard not to love the Tempo Move. It combines the benefits of free weight exercise with the benefits of AI-driven fitness coaching and studio classes. If I had to call out a flaw, I’d say the setup could be more portable. While it still earned 3 out of 5 points for portability—you can certainly move it around your home if needed, though it’d be an effort—it’s not something you can reasonably take for travel workouts.

If you’re an advanced strength athlete, you may consider looking into larger packages, like the Pro or Max Bundles. The Starter Bundle tops out at 50 pounds, which is great for studio-style classes, but may be limiting for stronger folks.

Our top recommendation for portable smart home gym equipment is the MaxPRO SmartConnect cable machine, which is among the smallest all-in-one gym setups and can be easily taken anywhere.

The Shred app is an AI-powered virtual trainer that can be used to customize workouts in your home or commercial gym.

What our tester says:

“The instructions are great. If you’re not doing a trainer-led video, some exercise tutorials also come with step-by-step breakdowns on how to do a certain exercise.”

At a Glance

  • Affordable subscription
  • Simple to set up and use
  • AI-driven fitness progression
  • Suitable for a variety of fitness goals

The Shred App uses AI-powered programs for users with many different fitness goals. After giving the app access to your smartphone’s camera, it can track and rate your performance using its AI algorithm, customizing the program based on your performance. Tester Matt Dustin, CSCS, PN1-C told me it’s about as close to having a personal trainer as you can get without talking to someone one-on-one, making it an easy choice for the best AI fitness training program.

Pricing: 4/5

This app is affordable at $9.99 per month.

App Setup: 5/5

Our tester says the app couldn’t be easier to set up or use.

Accountability: 3/5

Screenshots of the Shred app
There could be more accountability, our tester notes, as there’s no live coach. That said, it’s a good fit for those who just need a small push.

Why We Like the Shred App

For equipment demands, Shred easily earns 5 out of 5 stars, writes Matt in our Shred App review. “You’ll tell the app exactly what equipment you have access to, and each program will include only what you have on-hand. You can also manually swap out exercises if you need to change the program for any reason once it’s been created.”

The app also earns a perfect 5-out-of-5 score for exercise instruction. “This is perfect. If you’re not doing a trainer-led video, there are exercise tutorials that also come with step-by-step breakdowns on how to do a certain movement,” says our other tester, Anthony O’Reilly, CPT, CNC. It also comes with AI coaching and ratings, similar to what JuggernautAI does. You have to give the app permission to use your camera, though, to take advantage of this feature.

Shred is able to keep the price fairly low, too, only costing $19.99 monthly, or $9.99 a month if billed annually. There’s also a free version available, earning it a 4 out of 5 for pricing. Just note that the free app doesn’t come with all of the AI personalization features—just an exercise library and basic tracking features.

You can truly customize this based on what you have at your home gym—or what’s available at your commercial gym of choice. There are even workouts and programs available for bodyweight movements.

Anthony O’Reilly, CPT, CNC

Alternatives

The Shred App is great, but it is, at the end of the day, only an app. It earned 3 out of 5 points for its interactive features, which are bare-bones but can still be effective. You get a basic community feed and the ability to chat with friends, Anthony points out, but that’s about it.

If you’re looking for more interactive features, consider something like the Tempo Move. You’ll pay more for the subscription, but the setup comes with physical equipment and robust trainer-led programming, studio-style classes, and exercise correction features.

The Shred App met our benchmarks for its free trial (seven days) and stood out for its ease of use and setup, clear exercise instruction, and customer service.

The Speediance Gym Monster Home Gym is an expensive option for a smart and compact functional trainer.

What our tester says:

“After a strength assessment, it recommends the weights for you based upon the reps, similarly to Tonal. It’s designed for a novice, so beginners shouldn’t have any issues getting it set up and in working order.”

At a Glance

  • Up to 220 pounds of digital resistance
  • No wall-mounting installation required
  • Consistently improving software
  • Variety of attachments available

I talked with our product testers who tried the Speediance Gym Monster, and their analysis boiled down to one thing: This is a smart home gym designed for beginners. The resistance goes up to 110 pounds per arm, which might not sound like a lot, but digital resistance is often more challenging than free weights or machines, so it’s perfect for people just starting their strength training journey.

Portability: 3/5

Value: 4/5

An image of Speediance attachments
This product isn’t cheap by any means, but for a well-equipped smart gym, it’s a great value.

Why We Like Speediance

GGR Facility Manager Sam Presley was impressed with how the digital home gym’s weight shifted between settings. “For instance, you can definitely feel a difference between having it in barbell mode versus chains,” Sam says. “It definitely feels like a chain simulation when lifting with it.” This, and the machine’s other smart features, earn it 4 out of 5 points in the category.

Sam also called out the options for different packages based on different fitness goals. All Speediance orders come with a platform, frame, and two pulleys. Other attachments include a weight bench, a rowing side rail, a small barbell, ankle straps, ski erg handles, smart handles, and a tricep rope. The multiple attachments along with the varying types of resistance earns the machine a 5 out of 5 for versatility.

After a strength assessment, it recommends the weights for you based upon the reps, similarly to Tonal. It’s designed for a novice, so beginners shouldn’t have any issues getting it set up and in working order.

Coop Mitchell, GGR founder

Alternatives

This smart machine isn’t quite as durable as competitors like Tonal, earning a 3 out of 5 for its construction. For example, the pulleys hitch from time to time, but only slightly. Sam also mentioned when putting together the unit that, “Many pieces felt very white-label and basic in construction and design.” That being said, a main selling point is Speediance is more affordable than its competitors and doesn’t require a monthly subscription—a rarity when it comes to electronic home gym equipment.

We’re big fans of Speediance and appreciate its more palatable pricing, but if you truly want the best of the best, you’ll have to fork over the cash for a Tonal setup. It’s worth it if construction and programming are important to you.

The Alter Screen is a high-tech solution for fitness enthusiasts who want interactive, coach-led workouts at home. While it comes at a premium, requires a health assessment from a DNA test prior, and relies on a subscription model, it markets itself as part of a comprehensive health and wellness plan. Along with the fitness mirror, Alter sends personalized workouts and nutrition guides to help optimize your health.

At a Glance

  • No assembly required
  • Personalized fitness plan based on DNA test (required)
  • Trainer-led studio-style fitness classes
  • Optional fitness and sleep tracker wearable

Fitness mirrors are few and far between these days, with most of the major players (Tempo Studio, NordicTrack Vault, and ProForm Vue, to name a few) having been discontinued. Alter has brought a new workout mirror experience to the game, though. This smart machine offers personalized programming based on your results from a fitness-centric DNA test, solidifying its spot as the best smart fitness mirror.

Why We Like Alter Screen

This product is comprehensive and incredibly versatile, says Grant Smith, GGR team member and our product tester for the Alter Screen, who rated the smart features with 5 out of 5 points. To create a comprehensive plan and personalized routine for individuals, you purchase a DNA testing kit to assess your health and wellness, which is then followed by a digital consultation.

After that, you can purchase the Screen straight up or opt for a financing plan and subscription. The total package adds a fitness and sleep tracker, along with basic equipment (resistance bands and yoga blocks) for workouts.

“Using the fitness mirror is easy,” adds Grant. “Setting up the mirror to the app and fitness tracker are seamless once you get everything.” Still, because of the initial consultation and wait time on delivery of your DNA kit and results, Grant rates the ease of use just shy of perfect with a 4 out of 5.

The idea behind Alter is that it’s a one-stop shop for all things fitness and health. It definitely lives up to that idea with its breadth of offerings.

Grant Smith, GGR team member and product tester

Alternatives

This can be a costly smart mirror since you have to first purchase the testing kit at $99 and then add a subscription along with the cost of the smart mirror itself. The mirror is nearly $3,000, but Alter has multiple ways to finance it, including the brand’s proprietary financing platform AlterPay. The subscription fee is $66 per month, which earns just 2 out of 5 points. With pricing like that, we’d like to see a longer warranty included than just the limited one-year warranty on the Alter Screen.

Seeking something more budget-friendly, but almost as intuitive as the Alter package? Try Tempo Move, which starts at just $504, plus a monthly fee of $39 for the fitness app.

Testing Breakdown

Our tester rated the Alter Screen highly for versatility, assembly, and smart features, but felt it lacked in the warranty department. The subscription cost is also quite high at $66 monthly.

The MaxPRO SmartConnect Portable Cable Machine is a lightweight and portable full body machine, which offers up to 300 pounds of resistance. This makes it an extremely versatile piece of portable equipment with a small footprint.

What our tester says:

“At first, the cables weren’t quite as smooth as I would have liked, but they simply needed a break-in period.”

At a Glance

  • Everything you need in a small package
  • Subscription not required, but recommended
  • Small footprint
  • Weighs just 9 pounds

If you are searching for a lightweight, truly portable piece of smart gym equipment that can work all the major muscle groups, your quest ends here. The MaxPRO SmartConnect portable cable machine earns its title thanks to its sub-10-pound product weight and the fact that it doesn’t require disassembly and setup every time you move it.

RELATED: Best Cable Machines for Home Gyms

Smart Features: 3.5/5

A man does rows using the wall-mounted MAXPRO Smart Connect
The MaxPRO SmartConnect definitely has a smart edge, but the app experience could be more seamless, per our tester.

Durability: 4/5

Coop using the MaxPRO Smart Connect Cable Machine to do rows
Made from aerospace-grade aluminum, this thing is sturdy. The cables may need maintenance over time, though.

Portability: 5/5

The MaxPRO SmartConnect wins in portability. It’s lightweight and easy to pack down into its included case.

Why We Like the MaxPRO SmartConnect

We’ve used the MaxPRO SmartConnect Portable Cable Machine on the beach and in parking lots, and it performs as well on the road as it did in our testing headquarters, earning it a 5 out of 5 in portability. The best part is you don’t have to attach it to anything to use, though there is a door mounting bracket if you want to use it for upper-body movements. It weighs under 10 pounds, too, while producing up to 300 pounds of resistance.

“At first, the cables weren’t quite as smooth as I would have liked, but they simply needed a break-in period,” Coop Mitchell, GGR founder, notes, giving it a 4 out of 5 for workout performance. He took one point off because you’re only getting concentric resistance, so you’re not working your muscles as hard as you could be if there was eccentric resistance, as well.

Concentric exercise refers to the shortening phase of an exercise, while eccentric exercise refers to the lengthening phase. For instance, in a deadlift, the descent is the eccentric portion and the pull up from the floor is the concentric. Learn more about concentric versus eccentric movement.

I have a confession to make—I use the SmartConnect way more than I expected to. Although I still wish it did have both concentric and eccentric capabilities, I still enjoy using this cable machine.

Coop Mitchell, GGR founder

Alternatives

There is an app where certified personal trainers guide you through strength training and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts and track your reps and sets, though Coop found the app to be a bit clunky and said there were times it didn’t connect to the machine. “The idea is good, but the execution could be improved,” says Coop.

On the bright side, the app isn’t required for you to use the machine and you still get a lot of cool features with the free version (the premium version is $19.99 per month and gives you access to more personalized workout data along with additional classes).

For a robust smart training app that adapts to your fitness goals and needs, we recommend checking out the Shred App, which you can use with just about any equipment you have.

  • Tracks sleep, fitness, and health metrics
  • Subscription required for complete functionality
  • Not ideal for use during resistance training

Our top pick for the best smart fitness tracker is also our pick for the best fitness tracker ring—the Oura Ring. As one of the first fitness tracker rings to gain popularity in the space, the Oura Ring has a reputation for being great at accurately tracking metrics and displaying them in an easy-to-read format on the accompanying app.

Battery Life: 5/5

Ergonomics & Comfort: 5/5

A close look at the Oura Ring on Coop's hand while he's holding a barbell
Our testers love that you can comfortably wear the Oura Ring while working out, though it can feel in the way during strength training.

Why We Like the Oura Ring

The Oura Ring earns 4.5 out of 5 for tech capabilities. It can measure metrics such as heart rate, sleep, body temperature, steps, breathing rate, and more. Using these metrics, it’ll provide different scores each day—a Sleep Score, an Activity Score and a Readiness Score. The Sleep Score estimates how well you slept and recovered, the Readiness Score displays how recovered you are from your last workout, and the Activity Score shows if you’re efficiently balancing training and rest.

Our testers also rated it a 5 out of 5 for ergonomics and comfort, as well. “The ring portion feels like the main separator,” says Coop Mitchell, GGR founder. “It’s surprisingly lightweight and most of the time, I forget it’s on.”

The numbers are pretty self-explanatory and you can click on anything you don’t know and they give great, quick reads on what the metric is.

Coop Mitchell, GGR founder

Alternatives

The Oura Ring may not be the best choice for those who do a lot of barbell or dumbbell workouts, or for larger athletes. Another tester of ours, Caine Wilkes, OLY, CNC, USAW-1, says, “It’s just a hair too thick; it feels in the way while trying to get a grip on snatches or cleans.” Caine also mentions that the largest Oura size only fits on his pinky finger. “I’d love to see them expand their sizes for larger athletes,” he notes.

Want to track your fitness without a wearable? The Shred App can be a worthwhile choice. It uses AI to help you reach your fitness goals, and you can log everything seamlessly in the app.

If you are looking for a high-tech, well-made rower with a ton of workout options, the Aviron Strong Series Rower may be for you.

What our tester says:

“The large touchscreen is very snappy, and well done.”

At a Glance

  • Eight types of rowing workouts to choose from
  • Large HD touchscreen
  • Affordable subscription
  • Combines strength training with cardio

The Aviron Strong Go Rower is one of the best rowing machines out there. What makes it the best smart rower? For one, it has a gorgeous 22-inch, rotating touchscreen display with fantastic audio and visual quality. On top of that, the app delivers fun (yes, actually fun) workouts that feel like playing video games.

Durability & Construction: 4/5

The Strong Series rower is well-constructed from premium materials.

Adjustability: 4/5

A view from behind of a man wearing an FDNY t-shirt using an Aviron rower
With multiple points of adjustment, the Strong Series rower is comfortable for people with different body types and heights.

Programming: 5/5

All of our testers have been big fans of Aviron’s gamified programming.

Why We Like the Aviron Strong Series Rower

Right off the bat, we’re big fans of the adjustable footrests, which allow you to change the width and height of the footplate. We have a teammate with a size 15 shoe, and this machine fits him just as well as those of us with average-sized feet. Secondly, the seat is 20 inches from the ground, which makes it easier to get on or off, and it’s easier to step over. It earns a 4 out of 5 for ergonomics.

The Aviron Strong Series rower also blew me away in terms of construction and durability. Crafted from space-grade aluminum and outfitted with high-quality components, using the Strong rower is a luxurious experience. Sometimes, I can even imagine I’m in a LifeTime or Equinox gym. The only point of concern is the foam seat, which may compress over time. As such, the Strong rower earns 4 out of 5 points for durability.

Another special callout: This rowing machine is unique in that it provides up to 100 pounds of resistance at the highest level. This means you can use it as resistance training equipment in addition to cardio equipment, and that’s unique among rowing machines.

Aviron’s gamified training is pretty special. If you’re looking for that arcade-like experience, then this is great value.

Coop Mitchell, GGR founder

Alternatives

The Aviron Strong Series rower scored nearly perfectly across all of our testing criteria, with its lowest score being a 3.5 out of 5 for value. It still exceeded our benchmark, but we have to say, the machine is expensive, even without taking the subscription fee into account. We still think it’s worth it for those who will stick to rowing.

Also note that the slide rail is shorter in length compared to most rowing machines, so taller individuals might feel constricted.

Rowing is a great cardio, full-body workout, but it’s far from the only option. If you prefer to run, check out our top pick for the best smart treadmill, the NordicTrack Commercial 1750.

One of the more expensive options for virtual biking, the Peloton Bike is designed to be an all-in-one fitness solution on a high-quality cardio machine. You’re paying not only for the bike, but the unique training experience it makes accessible from the comfort of your home.

What our tester says:

“Sure, this bike may need regular maintenance and other bikes may be built better, but the streaming experience is unbeatable. I’ve had to reach out to Peloton support twice in two years, and they’ve been vey responsive and fast to ship replacement parts. I’m happy with my purchase.”

The Peloton bike has always been one of the best exercise bikes in our book. What makes it the best smart exercise bike is its exceptional dynamic programming. As certified personal trainer and Garage Gym Reviews Director of Content Nicole Davis puts it, “Peloton instructors have become celebrities in their own right, and the community is unbeatable.”

Why We Like the Peloton Bike

Peloton’s on-demand and live workout classes get a perfect, no-notes 5 out of 5 from Nicole. The instructors are some of the most motivating coaches on the planet—many of whom have been credited in countless weight loss and fitness stories—and there’s still an undeniable rush every time your name is called out during class.

The magnetic resistance is smooth and quiet, according to Nicole, who says, “It’s a smooth ride—smoother than other bikes I’ve used and tested. Plus, the magnetic resistance means each tiny turn of the knob will provide just a bit more for you to pedal against.” She also points out that the bike is easy to move around your home gym or workout studio, despite its weight, rating the portability a 4.5 out of 5.

If you’re looking for a top-notch boutique cycling experience in your home, Peloton is the way to go. They live and breathe cycling, which is clear from the programming they offer.

Nicole Davis, CPT, PN1-NC

Alternatives

While we adore Peloton programming, we have some qualms with the bike itself. As Nicole points out, the seat is not comfortable and it requires Delta-compatible cycling cleats, earning it a 4 out of 5 for its ergonomics. Additionally, though we appreciate the five-year warranty on the frame, it’s a bit lackluster compared to other smart cardio equipment, which often boast warranties of 10 years.

If you want that smart cardio rush and want to make sure your equipment is protected for a long time, we have to recommend the Aviron Strong Series rower, which has an incredible 20-year frame warranty.

If you’re looking to add a workhorse of a treadmill to your home gym, we recommend the NordicTrack Commercial 1750. It’s one of the few treadmills that has decline training capabilities and is compatible with iFIT, one of the best training programs.

What our tester says:

“Overall this feels like a sturdy machine while remaining somewhat stylish – the update to the machine in terms of aesthetic is much appreciated.”

At a Glance

To be honest, the NordicTrack Commercial 1750 is our top choice for smart treadmills because of its iFIT programming. The courses and instructions are top-notch, rivaling the cult-favorite Peloton app, and every iFIT machine comes with Automatic Trainer Control, which allows your trainer to automatically adjust the treadmill’s speed and incline/decline during streamed workouts (this feature can be turned off).

We’re big fans of NordicTrack’s iFIT programming, which has studio classes, scenic runs, and more.

Why We Like the NordicTrack Commercial 1750

This treadmill thoroughly impressed our testers, with all three rating its performance 4.5 or higher. “The deck is well cushioned with RunFlex cushioning technology, allowing you to soften the impact on your joints or simulate road running,” says Lindsay Scheele, lead product reviewer at GGR Everything. Speaking of simulating road running, the 1750 offers both incline and decline adjustments—most treadmills come with incline, though decline settings are something rarely found on similar cardio machines.

This is a top-of-the-line treadmill with a slightly more expensive price tag. You get all the comforts and tech capabilities of some of the best treadmills on the market.

Kate Meier, CPT, USAW-1, CF-L1

Alternatives

The Commercial 1750 is on the larger side, earning it a 3.5 out of 5 for its footprint and portability. Although it can fold, you’ll still need a sizable space to have it in use. It also weighs 340 pounds, so it’s not exactly easy to move despite its transport wheels.

For a more compact smart gym machine, consider something like the Alter Screen. It takes up virtually no space, especially if you wall-mount it. And though it’s not a cardio machine, there are plenty of cardio and HIIT workouts in the programming library.

The Beyond Power Voltra I packs all the benefits of a cable machine into a portable design, though it comes with a high price tag.

What our tester says:

“In my dream minamalist setup, I would have a squat rack, bar and weight plates, a bench, adjustable dumbbells, and the Voltra I.”

At a Glance

  • Compact machine
  • Requires a squat rack or proprietary mount
  • No subscription cost
  • Great for minimalists

Home gym equipment expert and Garage Gym Reviews founder Coop Mitchell notes that our pick for the best smart cable machine, the Beyond Power Voltra I, is quick when making weight adjustments, and that alone puts it ahead of other smart cable machines that often lag. “Beyond that,” Coop says, “It’s highly versatile, easy to use, and tracks your reps and sets.”

Resistance: 4.5/5

Performance: 5/5

Portability: 5/5

The portable Travel Platform for the Beyond Power Voltra I.
With the travel mount, you can quite literally bring the Voltra I anywhere.

Why We Like the Beyond Power Voltra I

The compact machine attaches to a squat rack or other sturdy object—you have to buy a separately sold attachment—and creates up to 200 pounds of digital resistance that feels buttery smooth on just about every movement. There are some exercises that require ingenuity to perform, such as bench presses or leg extensions, but Coop still gives it a 5 out of 5 for performance.

It’s a very durable machine that comes with a cable stronger than what we’ve seen with other traditional cable machines, earning it a 5 out of 5 for durability and construction. “The weight of the product is only 13 pounds and creates a resistance of 200 pounds,” Coop says. “That is crazy to consider that you can have that much resistance with this little of a footprint.”

In my dream minimalist setup, I would have a squat rack, bar and weight plates, a bench, adjustable dumbbells, and the Voltra I.

Coop Mitchell, GGR founder

Alternatives

It should be noted that you need a squat rack post or a specific mount from Beyond Power to train with the Voltra I, which is why Coop recommends it as part of a minimalistic home gym approach and not as something to replace your entire home gym with. For that reason, it earned a 3 out of 5 for footprint and portability despite its compact size. With the separately purchased travel mount, it becomes more easily moveable, though.

We also have to call out the short return period of just 14 days. Between that and the one-year warranty, the most we can award the Voltra I is 3 out of 5 points for the category.

The MaxPRO SmartConnect is a smart cable system that’s more portable given that it requires no mount (though you’ll want one for exercises that aren’t pulled from the floor).

Testing Breakdown

The Voltra I is perfectly rated in construction and durability, performance, and footprint and portability. It also surpassed our benchmarks for other criteria, including setup and accessories.

Other Smart Home Gym Equipment We Researched

In our quest for the best smart home gym equipment, we’ve tested far more than what ended up on our final list. Here are a few other silhouettes that impressed us, but didn’t quite make the cut:

  • NordicTrack RW900 Rower: The NordicTrack RW900 is a great smart rowing machine, and we appreciate that it uses iFIT programming. However, the gamified workouts on the Aviron Strong Series rower won us over.
  • Echelon Connect EX-5: This bike is a big hit among our testers, and is actually our top pick for a Peloton alternative. Peloton still takes the cake for smart bikes, though.
  • Bowflex Treadmill 22: This treadmill is a beast, but the NordicTrack Commercial 1750 more than gets the job done and will save you a few hundred bucks.
  • Vitruvian Trainer+: We like the Vitruvian Trainer+, but feel that the Voltra I is a better value. It’s also more portable.

How We Picked and Tested the Best Smart Home Gym Equipment

Our testers are certified personal trainers, conditioning coaches, strength coaches, athletes, and all-around fitness enthusiasts. That means we analyze equipment with a hawk’s eye. Here’s a look at some key factors we examine when evaluating smart home gym equipment.

An image of a man rowing on Speediance
Our tester using the Speediance Gym Monster for a rowing workout
  • Value: It’s expected that this type of equipment is expensive. That said, everything we recommend is worth the price for the right buyer. In our testing, we make sure the offerings and experience align with the pricing.
  • Monthly subscription: Since no one really needs another ongoing subscription, we’re picky with what we recommend. To earn at least 3 points, smart gym subscription software must fall between $20 and $40 per month—what we feel is reasonable for this category.
  • Financing options: To earn 3 points, brands must meet our benchmark of 24+ months at 0% APR. This stuff isn’t cheap, after all!
  • Versatility: Equipment that allows for at least two distinct types of workouts (for instance, strength training and HIIT) or has software with multiple types of classes (that work with or without the equipment) earns a 3 out of 5.
  • Setup and delivery: Equipment earns a 3 out of 5 if one person can reasonably assemble it in under two hours. Ultra-quick assembly, or the option for professional in-home delivery and assembly, earns a 5-point score.

Benefits of Smart Home Gyms

Listen, we’re fans of the good old-fashioned clang and bang weights we all grew up with, and there will always be a place for that type of equipment in our training regimens. But the world is changing, which means fitness is changing. Smart home gyms can be a great way for many people to achieve their strength training or fitness goals with an added zest of tech.

“Smart home gym systems take the science of training and make it accessible,” says Dr. Susie Reiner, PhD, an exercise scientist who specializes in sport technology and digital health at TheoryEx. Below are some of our favorite perks associated with this home gym equipment category.

Artificial intelligence

Make as many Skynet jokes as you want, but AI can help people, who may not have access to a personal trainer, learn how to work with proper form on things like lifting and running.

tempo move being used by coop holding weight
The Tempo Move smart home gym, in operation

Machines like Tonal, Speediance, and Tempo “integrate machine learning algorithms that track how long you’ve been lifting a specific weight, how quickly you move through each rep, and whether you’ve completed or exceeded your target set or rep count,” Dr. Reiner explains. “These data points allow the system to automatically adjust resistance and overload parameters, essentially personalizing progression in real time.”

Technique and Volume Guidance

Between the built-in workouts and AI personal trainers, smart home gym equipment offers a great amount of convenience for those who may be tight on time. According to Dr. Reiner, they also reduce uncertainty.

“Instead of toggling between a YouTube video and your workout space, the system provides built-in video demonstrations so you can see proper form and start immediately,” she explains. “Some devices have integrated personalized programming based on your goals and recent training history. The combination of adaptive programming and visual guidance can take much of the guesswork out of training, easing the barrier of entry for new and experienced exercisers alike.”

Other types of smart equipment, like wearables, offer valuable insights into your training load and can keep you from doing too much to the point of overtraining.

Versatility

Smart home gyms allow you to access dozens, if not hundreds, of workouts that may not have been accessible to you through free weights. This can help shake up your fitness routine and address any weaknesses in your strength or physique.

Adherence

Part of a successful exercise routine is adherence—that means sticking to it over the long haul. For many people, smart home gym equipment makes working out more fun, making it easier to commit to a routine.

“Add in motivational features like instructor-led classes, curated music, and visual progress tracking, and these systems make consistency and engagement much easier than traditional ‘analog’ setups,” Dr. Reiner points out. “That said, free weights still have an advantage for versatility and full range of movement, particularly for exercises that some smart systems can’t replicate without attachments. Plus, you don’t need an internet connection, a subscription, and electricity to perform them.”

Buying Guide: What to Look for in Smart Home Gym Equipment

Smart home gym equipment can be complex. Therefore, there’s a lot to think about when shopping for a smart setup. In short, per Dr. Reiner, “A smart home gym should feel accessible, adapt to your needs, and help you understand your training while building confidence and consistency from the start.” Here’s what to look for.

Coop uses dual Beyond Power Voltra I machines to do lat pulldowns.

Something You Enjoy

“Beginners should look for a system that fits naturally into their daily life,” Dr. Reiner says. “It should be easy to access in your home, feel approachable rather than intimidating, and be something you genuinely look forward to using.”

Personalization and Progression

Look for platforms that personalize your programming and automatically progress your workouts, so you do not have to guess which exercise to do, how many reps to perform, or when to increase resistance, Dr. Reiner recommends.

“Built-in video demonstrations, classes, and music help maintain motivation and eliminate the friction of switching between devices or apps during a workout,” she says. “Systems that provide real-time feedback, such as form cues or resistance adjustments, help beginners learn proper technique faster than post-workout summaries.”

Motivational Elements

Behavioral features are equally important, according to Dr. Reiner. “Programs that track streaks, set achievable milestones, and recognize small wins tend to keep people consistent,” she notes. “Ideally, the system should grow with you by adding new challenges and more advanced guidance as your fitness improves.”

Some research shows that home-based exercise systems with video trainers, such as iFIT or the Peloton app, promote better cardiometabolic health2 when combined with a healthy diet. Other research3 shows that fitness apps with personalized programming (like the Shred App) “significantly improved physical function and confidence in exercise performance” for people with short- and long-term disabling conditions.

Delivery and Setup Experience

Are there professional assembly options available for installing the smart home gym equipment? If so, how much does it cost, and how easy was it to set up the smart technology before you could start using it? Technology can be finicky, and it can be frustrating to set something up only to run into endless installations and updates before you can even use your shiny new toy. Easy setup—or the option for professional assembly—is key.

Budget

The most obvious limitation of smart gym training systems is cost and accessibility. They “represent a significant financial investment, with both the initial hardware and the ongoing subscription for content and analytics,” Dr. Reiner says. “That puts them out of reach for many users, especially compared to a set of adjustable dumbbells or resistance bands that can deliver solid results at a fraction of the price.”

Most of our top picks for the best smart home gym equipment, if not all of them, have financing options available. Many fitness companies partner with Affirm, Klarna, Afterpay, and other pay-over-time services that don’t affect your credit. Some brands use traditional personal loan servicing to offer financing options. Be sure to read the fine print thoroughly if you finance your smart home gym purchases.

Space

Second to budget, space will largely dictate your smart home gym buys. If you have a ton of space and a ton of money, you can build an entire smart home gym with our top picks from every category. If you only have a small amount of space for a home gym, your best bet is to go with a silhouette like Tonal or Speediance, which can pack a lot of variety and versatility into a relatively small package of compact workout equipment.

That said, such wall-mounted systems require permanent installation, and platform-based setups need a dedicated footprint and clearance around the unit to perform exercises safely, Dr. Reiner points out. “That can be a challenge in smaller apartments or shared spaces. Others that can be tucked away under furniture can still be quite heavy, limiting use for individuals with mobility or movement impairments.”

In the latter case, a smaller setup like the Tempo Move or MaxPRO SmartConnect can be a better choice.

Training Style

Your preferred training style and fitness goals should influence your final choice. If you’ve never rowed before and have little to no interest in rowing, for instance, breeze right on by the Aviron Strong Rower and pick something better suited to your wants and needs.

For those who like to do a little bit of everything, I recommend purchasing smart home gym equipment that uses interactive fitness programming not limited to the hardware you buy. For example, iFIT powers the workouts on the NordicTrack Commercial 1750 treadmill, but iFIT also has strength workouts, yoga flows, high-intensity interval training, and other types of workout classes you can do.

Audio and Visual Quality

It’s cool if a treadmill or exercise bike has a built-in screen, but you don’t want something that looks like it was running on Windows 97. The aesthetic of a home gym’s dashboard is just as important as its functionality.

Does it run smoothly? Is it intuitive? Does the user interface allow for easy navigation, or are workouts routinely interrupted by persnickety menus standing in the way of those sweet gains?

Smart gyms come with a serious price tag, so you should expect the best quality possible, from the workout functions to the menus. You don’t want subpar audio and laggy UX to bring down your training.

Maintenance and Support

All exercise machines require regular maintenance, but smart home gym equipment can be a bit more complex. On top of the standard pulleys, pedals, and cables featured on many of them, you also have to contend with the smart features themselves.

Like any tech, these devices are susceptible to occasional glitches and software bugs, and they often require software updates that can be tricky to figure out. In short, you’ll want to look into the customer support options available for any smart equipment you buy.

Make sure the company has support pages and contact information listed on its website, and see if it offers video tutorials for basic troubleshooting. If possible, read the maintenance information before making a purchase to get a feel for how much of a time investment it will be to keep the equipment in good shape.

Smart Features

It makes sense that you should look for smart features in something labeled as smart home gym equipment. Some features to look out for include:

  • Interactive programming
  • Live and on-demand classes
  • Real-time feedback on exercise technique
  • Artificial intelligence programming
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity
  • Device compatibility

Don’t forget to look for the basics, too:

  • Display and/or touchscreen
  • Speakers/audio
  • Cameras

Warranty

Check to see what type of coverage the manufacturer offers on all parts of the machine, including the screen (if it has one). Unless you’re a tech expert, it’s going to be hard to fix or replace a lot of the equipment on smart home gym equipment, so you’ll want to make sure you’re covered if anything happens.

Subscription Cost

The cost of your smart home gym equipment is one thing, but you’ll also likely have to pay a monthly subscription fee to get the most out of it. While the cost can vary by brand, you can often expect to pay between $10 and $60 per month.

So, that $2,000-plus home gym could end up costing an extra $360 or more per year, which is definitely something to consider. That said, these subscriptions unlock the real selling points of many smart machines, including workout classes, AI assistants, fitness trackers, and custom training programs.

Subscriptions aren’t inherently necessary to train with certain smart home gyms, but we do recommend opting into the digital subscriptions if you want the most bang for your buck.

FAQs About the Best Smart Home Gym Equipment

What is smart home gym equipment?

Smart home gym equipment is any type of home fitness equipment with an element of technology or connectivity. There’s no hard-and-fast definition, but in general, smart home gym equipment is the type that will connect to your various devices (phone, fitness tracker, etc) and has artificial intelligence features such as coaching, form feedback, rep counting, or intensity adjustment.

Is smart home gym equipment better than regular equipment?

This totally depends on who you ask. I think smart home gym equipment is growing in popularity for a reason: People like their stuff to be connected, and the versatility these products bring to small spaces is unbeatable. On the other hand, some people will never want smart gym equipment and will always prefer to use traditional weights and machines.

Can you get a good workout with a smart home gym?

For sure. If anything, you can get a better workout with a smart home gym because it can tell you if you need to lift more or less weight, speed up or slow down, or increase or decrease the intensity. Some smart home gyms even correct your technique in real-time, which is the best way to improve your workouts. But as Dr. Reiner points out, “you remain the most important variable in the training equation.”

“The technology can guide load progression and provide structure, but it doesn’t know how you slept, whether you’re stressed, or how your body feels that day,” she continues. “Retaining autonomy by listening to your body and adjusting based on your own goals and readiness is critical.”

What smart home gym equipment is the most effective?

Our pick for the most effective smart home gym equipment goes to the Tonal 2. Its digital weight can work all of the major muscle groups, it has adaptive AI technology, and it’s space-friendly. The software even provides workouts with a cardio stimulus to promote overall health. Yes, it’s quite expensive but we argue it will pay for itself when you factor in things like travel and the cost of a gym membership.
