Since its start in 2017, HYROX has been steadily growing in popularity, with functional fitness enthusiasts across the globe trying out the aptly named “World Series of Fitness Racing.” The fitness race has gained enough popularity in recent years that it’s earned an official equipment sponsor, Centr.

Centr, already manufacturing some of the best treadmills for a home gym, introduced their HYROX equipment to races in early 2024, and we’ve now gotten our hands on the essential equipment needed to prepare for HYROX competitions.

In this Centr HYROX equipment review, we’ll talk about the official equipment made by Centr in collaboration with HYROX and go over our initial impressions on its quality, value, and overall build. If you’re prepping for race day and want to take your training to the next level, you’ll definitely want to read on.

On Your Mark, Get Set…Review!

At Garage Gym Reviews, we may not all be HYROX athletes, but we still take our fitness very seriously. Our team of product testers has plenty of experience in the field of fitness. We’re comprised of certified personal trainers, lifting coaches, competitive athletes, and even current and former gym owners. We know all about fitness equipment and home gym essentials because we live it, too—walking the walk so we can talk the talk.

For our Centr x HYROX equipment, GGR Everything lead reviewer Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC, unboxed and assembled the equipment, giving her initial impressions on most of it. She also tested several pieces of equipment deeply, using them for several cardio-focused functional fitness workouts. While trying out these pieces of equipment, she rated them on the following factors:

  • Construction and durability
  • Footprint and portability
  • Delivery and setup
  • Performance
  • Overall value

Centr X HYROX Equipment

A Quick Look at Centr X HYROX Equipment

Before we dive into the equipment, those new to HYROX might want to know what it is. HYROX is a method of functional training combining running with functional workout stations.

RELATED: What Is Functional Fitness?

It’s hard to talk about one functional fitness sport without talking about CrossFit, but it differs from the CrossFit Games and similar events by having the same structured race at every competition. Unlike CrossFit’s approach to training for the “unknown and unknowable,” you’ll know exactly what you’re getting into with HYROX.

Our tester hooks up a rope to a Centr x HYROX Competition Power Sled

A HYROX race consists of eight functional workout stations, each preceded by a 1-kilometer run. The stations are:

  1. 1,000 m SkiErg
  2. 50 m sled push
  3. 50 m sled pull
  4. 80 m burpee broad jump
  5. 1000 m row
  6. 200 m farmers carry
  7. 100 m sandbag lunges
  8. 100 wall balls

Because of the race structure, HYROX also lends itself more to athletes with a focus on cardio, whereas top CrossFit athletes also have to compete in strength exercises, like a max clean and jerk.

Centr, founded by actor and action star Chris Hemsworth, partnered up with HYROX in late 2023, with the new equipment first being used in races in early 2024. The equipment consists of competition-ready equipment, along with a few items that aren’t used in competitions but can still aid in your training. The competition equipment consists of:

  • Power sleds
  • Power ropes
  • Wall balls
  • Wall ball targets
  • Bumper plates
  • Kettlebells

They also offer their Perform Tread, which we’ll cover later in more detail, and dumbbells.

Before You Buy

  • Because Centr sells treadmills, functional trainers, and other equipment not affiliated with HYROX, they keep their Centr x HYROX line on a separate page for easy navigation.
  • Make sure to note the warranties for each product, as the warranty changes depending on residential, commercial, or competition use.
  • Although Centr is the official equipment provider of HYROX races, you won’t be able to get all of your official HYROX equipment from there. Races also use the Concept2 RowErg and SkiErg, which aren’t available on Centr’s website.

Centr HYROX Equipment Video Review

Is Centr X HYROX Equipment Worth It?

As an Olympian in the sport of weightlifting who has over two decades of experience under his belt, I can say with certainty that you don’t always have to have the best equipment to have good training. I’ve trained on quality Olympic barbells, and I’ve trained on rusted 50-year-old bars with worn knurling that was nearly nonexistent. It’s less about the quality of products, but more about getting the work done.

That said, Centr’s HYROX line consists of quite a few high-quality pieces of equipment. Lindsay adds, “A lot of the equipment impressed me, especially the power sled and how smooth it travels over turf.”

If there’s any major complaint about the equipment as a whole, it’s that it can be a bit overpriced. People on a budget or beginners not wanting to spend a lot who wish to train and compete in HYROX can find plenty of similar pieces of equipment for much cheaper than Centr’s asking price.

Our tester working out with a Centr x HYROX Competition Wall Ball

However, if you’re seriously competing in HYROX and want the exact products at home for your training, these are great products and worth the slightly higher price. Plus, the equipment is sharp, with consistent design, branding, and looks across all the equipment.

Great for:

  • Functional fitness enthusiasts
  • People who enjoy high-quality design in their equipment
  • Serious HYROX competitors

Not recommended for:

  • People on a budget
  • Heavy lifters who prefer barbell training
  • Home gym owners who use machines for workouts

Using Centr HYROX Equipment

A lot of the specs on the equipment we’ll go over from Centr are appealing, but sometimes the details are found in the workout performance. So how did the equipment fare in our testing?

GGR Everything’s Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC, has tested out four pieces of Centr x HYROX equipment and gave her first thoughts on other pieces. She took them through HYROX-themed workouts involving sled pulls and pushes, wall balls, and running. We loaded up the weight sled to see how it traveled over turf and other flooring.

Overall, the equipment holds up pretty well. All of it is solidly built and performed exceptionally well during workouts and testing. Let’s break down some of the specifics now.

The Centr x HYROX Competition Power Sled is built for HYROX competitions with commercial-grade steel. With a chrome plating on the weight horn and a powder coating on the rest of the sled, this competition sled is made to endure tons of use, as seen by its limited lifetime warranty.

The Centr x HYROX Power Sled is the actual sled used for HYROX races at two stations: sled push and sled pull. Whether or not you’re actually competing in HYROX, this power sled is definitely worth a look, since it impressed our tester Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC. “Out of all the weight sleds I’ve tested, this is the one I’d pick,” she says.

The Power Sled’s construction is completely from commercial-grade steel, and all of it is powder-coated, save for a chrome-plated weight horn that twists and locks in the center.

Side view of our tester pushing a Centr x HYROX Competition Power Sled

There are four posts, and two can be placed two on each end, so you won’t have to worry about moving the posts over on a sled push if you’re changing direction. It earns a 5 out of 5 for its construction and durability. The posts also have a textured knurling along with grip markers so competitors can easily find their ideal grip.

Although the sled has a pretty large footprint when constructed, you can easily remove the weight horn and posts to break down the sled and save space when not in use. The parts can easily lean against your home gym wall. At 110 pounds, it’s still a little hefty to move around, so it earns a 4.5 out of 5 for its portability.

Centr claims the sled can be used on any home gym flooring, but Lindsay says, “It really shines on the turf. It’s just so smooth.” She notes rubber flooring works, too, but there will definitely be more friction and more resistance across that type of flooring.

If there’s a limiting factor, it only has attachments for sled pulls with a rope and pushes. Centr doesn’t make a harness to allow for backward walking or sled drags. However, you can use any attachment that can connect to the hooks on either side of the sled (with a carabiner), so it still earns a 4.5 out of 5 for versatility.

At $395, this is a pricier weight sled, but it’s still comparable to other quality sleds, like the Rogue Dog Sled (more on that later). With smooth travel and quality construction, it’s hard to pass this sled up.

The Centr x HYROX Perform Tread is a manual treadmill whose curved design promotes a natural stride. The treadmill provides eight levels of magnetic resistance, allowing it to mimic sled movements like pushes and pulls along with running or walking. Although it’s a pricey option, it’s built solidly, with aluminum slats and rubber molding.

Curved manual treadmills have gained popularity in recent years because of their natural ability to correct improper running form while also increasing your perceived exertion1 over a motorized treadmill.

Although the Centr x HYROX Perform Tread isn’t used in HYROX races, it’s built to train for them, as this manual treadmill has eight levels of magnetic resistance. Higher levels of resistance will mimic sled pushes and pulls, ideal for HYROX training. “Only a few manual treadmills offer magnetic resistance,” adds Lindsay, “and this is definitely one of the better ones.”

Side view of our tester walking on the Centr x HYROX Perform Tread

The Centr x HYROX Official Perform Tread is built for heavy-duty use. Its aluminum slats are topped with a grippy rubber surface and a 396-pound user weight capacity, earning it a 5 out of 5 for durability. Lindsay adds that running on the treadmill wasn’t the best experience, simply because the belt felt a bit heavy to move. If you’re looking for a manual treadmill just for running, then this may not be the ideal choice.

Fortunately, the Perform Tread doesn’t just run; it allows for pushes and pulls, too. According to Lindsay, the Perform Tread provides a challenging workout ts top resistance, although the resistance doesn’t mimic an incredibly heavy sled push. “If you’re routinely loading up over 300 pounds to your sled for pushes, this probably will feel a little light,” says Lindsay. Still, she rates the workout performance a 4.5 out of 5. While it’s not perfect, all of its features perform well.

Its versatility is one of its strengths, which may help explain its total price of nearly $7,000. Being able to push, pull, or run essentially makes the treadmill a three-in-one machine. It’s good value, but only to those specifically looking for a treadmill with these features, so it earns a 3.5 out of 5 for value.

Lindsay says that this is a good manual treadmill. Is it the best? Not really, but it’s definitely worth a look for HYROX athletes wanting a treadmill with resistance for sled training. If you’re just looking for a treadmill for running, however, there are probably better (and cheaper) options out there.

Competition Edge Bumper Plates are a collaboration between Centr and HYROX, made for easy loading and unloading of weight sleds at HYROX competitions. The urethane coating over a cast iron core provides a durable build that also reduces noise and impact when weights are dropped. Its IWF-standard diameter and sleeve opening also ensure that these premium-priced weight plates can be used on Olympic barbells, too.

Centr x HYROX Competition Bumper Plates are unique weight plates in that they’re mostly designed for sleds. Because these plates are used in competitions for sled pushes and pulls, they’re designed for quick loading and unloading from a weight horn.

Because of this, these bumper plates have an interlocking design where parts of the weight’s edge fit into place with a plate beneath them. They’ll be very secure when stacked. With a large lip, they’re also easy to remove from the sled or barbell for quick weight changes, earning them a 5 out of 5 for design and ergonomics. They also look sharp with a solid black urethane coating and bright white lettering.

Our tester loads a sled with a Centr x HYROX Competition Edge Bumper Plate

One of Lindsay’s first thoughts when unboxing the bumper plates was, “I wonder if these will hold up for Olympic lifting and barbell drops.” Although we’ll be doing our own testing soon enough, Centr says these weight plates are good to drop. Plus, with a urethane coating over a cast iron core, the weights are durable and will absorb shock and reduce noise on impact. They earn a 5 out of 5 for durability.

These bumper plates start at 2.5 kilograms and go up to 25 kilograms, which is a pretty good spread of weights to choose from, so long as you’re OK with kilograms instead of pounds. However, because these plates are used for weight sleds, they’re sold individually, not as a pair. Their prices are a bit steep because of that, earning the plates a 3 out of 5 for value. They’re designed well, but most people can find quality bumper plates for cheaper.

One thing Lindsay and our testers noticed when taking the bumper plates out of the box was that they were slick. Lindsay says this is pretty common with new plates and that “over time, that slick coating will wear off.”

The Centr x HYROX Competition Wall Ball is a high‑end wall available in race weights (4, 6, and 9 kilograms) or training weights (2 and 12 kilograms). With a PVC outer shell, this wall ball is built for durability, able to withstand tons of use in HYROX races. Although it’s on the pricier side, Centr claims this wall ball is balanced well even after plenty of repetitions, making it worth the premium price for some.

Every HYROX race ends with 100 wall ball shots, and if you’ve ever performed wall balls before, you know that is a brutal way to end your race. HYROX recognizes this by commemorating folks who excel in this station. “If you can do all of your wall balls unbroken without resting, HYROX gives you a little yellow flag as a way of saying ‘good job.’”

Our tester holding a Centr x HYROX Competition Wall Ball

There’s not a lot of innovation with these wall balls, but with some fitness equipment, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. The Centr x HYROX Wall Balls are built solidly with a double-stitched outer shell built out of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Lindsay’s initial impressions were positive, rating the construction a 4.5 out of 5. “It feels really solid and balanced well,” she adds.

Centr provides five different weights for their wall balls, including three competition weights (4, 6, and 9 kilograms) and two training weights (2 and 12 kilograms). All are the same size with a 14-inch diameter, and are symmetrically balanced to ensure the ball doesn’t shift around too much when tossed. The weight options are pretty in line with common wall ball weights—albeit they’re in kilograms—so the wall balls earn a 4 out of 5 for versatility.

Because there isn’t a ton of innovation on these wall balls, they do seem a bit overpriced, even with the solid construction. Titan Fitness and REP Fitness, for example, both offer similar options for cheaper. Because of this, the wall ball gets a 3.5 out of 5 for value. It’s good, but many people will probably want to seek out a cheaper wall ball.

Other Centr X HYROX Equipment

While we’ve tried out quite a few of the HYROX equipment available through Centr, we haven’t tried it all. Here are a few notable pieces of equipment that Centr offers.

Dumbbells and Kettlebells

HYROX uses kettlebells in their races for farmer’s carries, and Centr provides competition weights (16, 24, and 32 kilograms) and training weights (8, 12, 20, and 28 kilograms). While not made to exact competition kettlebell specs, the kettlebells are made with the same dimensions, and the same handle diameter—1.4 inches.

Centr also added urethane dumbbells. While not used in competitions, they’re great for dumbbell snatches and dumbbell deadlifts. Currently, there are only eight weights available from 5 to 25 kilograms, so they may not go as heavy (or light) as some people will want. However, the dumbbells appear heavy-duty and are backed by a limited lifetime warranty—even for commercial use.

Sandbags

The sandbag comes in three weights: 10 kilograms, 20 kilograms, and 30 kilograms (or 22, 44, or 66 pounds). The 10- and 20-kilogram sandbags are used for women and men, respectively, in the open division, and the 20- and 30-kilogram sandbags are used in the Pro division.

Our tester holds up a Centr x HYROX Competition Sand Bag

Lindsay received the 10-kilogram sandbag, and while she hasn’t put sand in it yet, Lindsay was impressed with the quality of the bag. “There are a lot of different handles to grab the bag how you want for your sandbag lunges,” she adds.

Power Ropes and Rig Targets

The power rope attaches to the power sled for sled drags, of which you’ll do for 50 meters in a HYROX race. Out of the box, the rope was a little slick, but that’ll wear off with regular use. The bolts connecting the end of the rope to the carabiner also drive through the rope, making sure that the rope is secured and won’t fall out of the metal end. It’s 15 meters long, though, which is longer than you may realize. Make sure you have room for it.

Our tester stands behind a Centr x HYROX Competition Power Rope

Centr x HYROX rig targets are simply a power rack attachment that you can use to aim for during your wall balls. The target is durable and made of commercial-grade steel, and it’s the same target used in races. Is it essential for your garage gym or HYROX training? No, but it certainly can be a nice addition, especially if your gym consists predominantly of HYROX equipment and gear.

Rigs and Turf

Centr has recently begun offering modular rigs for commercial or home gym storage, as well as the official competition HYROX turf. Neither is absolutely necessary for your home gym—although the black turf looks sharp. However, if you’re in the market for a rig or turf, these could be good options. You’ll need to contact Centr for quotes, though.

Customer Experience

Centr has a 15-day return policy for all online purchases, but the 15 days are from the purchase date listed on your invoice. More than likely, that means the return timeframe from delivery will be less than those 15 days. Centr can be contacted by phone, email, or contact form, where they’ll respond during their service hours Monday through Friday.

Connection point on a Centr x HYROX Competition Power Rope

All in all, Centr has pretty solid warranties offered for their Centr x HYROX equipment, especially for home gym use. Buyers should note whether or not their products would be for competition or commercial use, however, since the warranty can drop considerably on select products. Ordering and Assembling Centr HYROX Equipment

All Centr x HYROX equipment can be ordered directly from the website. People interested in their rig or turf will need to contact Centr directly for a quote, however.

Most Centr x HYROX equipment will come fully assembled, except for two items—the Perform Tread and the Power Sled. In our experience, putting these two products together was fairly simple. The Power Sled requires simply sliding the four posts into four slots, and the weight horn locks into place.

Aperson holds the internal sandbags from a Centr x HYROX Competition Sand Bag

The Perform Tread takes a bit more time and will need two people, mostly due to its heft. However, our assembly team of two people was able to build the treadmill in about 35 minutes, so even if you’re new to building out treadmills, it shouldn’t be an all-day task at all.

Customer Reviews

As of this writing, there are a limited number of customer reviews for Centr x HYROX equipment. Only a few reviews rate the equipment lower than 5 stars, so many are positive.

Many people are fans of the Perform Tread, with one customer noting that the magnetic resistance is one of the machine’s strongest aspects. Another highly rated item is the power sled, which one customer notes as having a fantastic design that minimizes bumps or stops while in use.

The few minor complaints came from the sandbags and wall balls. One review claimed that the sandbag proved to be just a little too small to comfortably fit the right amount of sand into the bag. Another person stated that the wall balls weren’t as symmetrically balanced as they are marketed to be.

Final Verdict of Our Centr HYROX Equipment Review

After her initial unboxing of all the HYROX equipment, Lindsay simply said, “I love it.” Centr x HYROX equipment certainly is high-quality. The most impressive piece of equipment was the power sled, simply for its smooth travel. The Perform Tread does a great job of combining three machines into one as well.

While some products like the wall ball and sandbag aren’t as innovative, they’re still made well and are durable. Although some items may be outside people’s budgets, any HYROX fans or athletes should take a look at this equipment line.

  • Note the warranties and how you plan to use these products, as warranties change depending on your level of use.
  • Even though this is the official equipment used in HYROX races, athletes who need budget-friendly equipment can certainly find similar items for less cost. However, the quality may vary.

Centr x HYROX Equipment: FAQs

What brand sled does HYROX use?

HYROX uses the Centr x HYROX Competition Power Sled, a push or pull sled that can hold 330 pounds of weight and travels smoothly across turf.

What equipment do I need to train for HYROX?

HYROX races incorporate a ton of functional training exercises. You can train for a race with minimal equipment, like a sandbag, kettlebells, wall ball, battle rope, and weight sled. The larger purchases would come from buying a rowing machine and a SkiErg. Aside from that, you’ll need to run, which you can do outside as long as you have a good pair of running shoes.

What’s the difference between HYROX and HYROX simulation?

HYROX simulations are unofficial HYROX races and competitions typically done at HYROX affiliates to prepare for larger races. These simulations are usually smaller in size, but people go to get a feel for the race prior to competing.
