best pre-workout for men

There are a lot of times when we as men will be a bit boastful and refuse help from anyone or anything—unless that’s a scoop of the best pre-workout to help get us through leg day. The problem, however, is that there are so many options to pick from—the global pre-workout industry was valued at more than $15 billion in 20211.

So while it might be hard for some to pick out the best pre-workout for men, that’s not the case for us. In this piece, we’ll run down our picks for the best pre-workout for men and have Laila Ouldibbat, a New York City-based registered dietitian who’s pursuing a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, explain the benefits of each one.

In addition to being regular gym-goers who know the ins and outs of the best Olympic barbells and mass gainers, the Garage Gym Reviews team is stacked with nutritional experts, certified personal trainers, USA Weightlifting coaches, and competitive triathletes. We used more than 50 pre-workouts during our regular training sessions to find the best one, narrowed down the list to our top 12 using our pre-workout testing methodology, and we’re ready to share everything you need to know to find the perfect pre-workout.

NOTE: We intend the term “men” to include all men, including trans men. However, we recognize that almost all research on this topic has focused on cis men (i.e., men who are not trans). For that reason, when we reference gender-based research and nutritional recommendations, we will clarify by saying “cis men.” We encourage trans and nonbinary people of all genders to check in with a trans-competent nutritionist regarding their supplements and training needs.

Transparent Labs’ BULK supplement is attractive to those whose primary focus is split between potential muscle gain and a pre-workout pump. While the taste is questionable, the product works well for most users.

What our tester says:

“The Blue Raspberry flavor is exactly what you’d expect from your typical Blue Razz—it’s not too sweet either, which I like.”

Transparent Labs BULK is meant for people who are looking to increase their muscle mass, though people often get their supplements from this company due to its promise to use natural ingredients and provide transparent labeling at all times.

Some gym-goers will be thrown off by the lower caffeine levels, but registered dietitian Laila Ouldibbat says that’s actually a good thing for individuals looking to get in as many reps as possible. “Moderate doses have been found to ‘significantly increase repetitions to failure and readiness to invest effort in athletes,’’’ she says, pointing to a pair2 of studies3.

Those increased reps and effort can help build muscle gain, which is exactly the goal of those looking to BULK (puns are always intended around here). There is no creatine in this product, but I personally didn’t miss it. There are also 4 grams of BCAAs, which have the potential to support muscle growth (the jury is still out, according to research).

Overall, we give this 4 out of 5 for the formulation.

RELATED: Best Creatine

Image of person adding a scoop of Transparent Labs Bulk to a shaker cup

The 4 grams of beta-alanine is more than the daily recommended dose, and though that amount can help boost muscular endurance and reduce muscle soreness, it can lead to a notable skin-tingling sensation that may be uncomfortable for those who haven’t taken much of the amino acid in the past.

As someone who’s taken his fair share of beta-alanine in the past, I feel like most trained individuals will be just fine taking this pre-workout, but I wouldn’t recommend it for beginners. I almost always go with blue raspberry when ordering pre-workouts, and this one gets a 5 out of 5 from me. It tastes exactly like one of those gas station slushies.

The solubility also gets a 5 out of 5, as it dissolves very well with no floaters or clumps.

Read more about my experience with this pre-workout in our Transparent Labs BULK review.

If you want something that packs a bit more of a punch, we recommend El Jefe Pre-Workout.

If you’re looking for a product that combines a pre-workout with creatine, Kaged Pre-Kaged Elite might be a good choice.

What our tester says:

“I don’t get the tingles and feel consistently high energy when I take it. Not super hyper and no crashing, either.”

Creatine is one of the most well-researched strength supplements, and if you’re looking for a great pre-workout that contains a full five-gram dose of creatine, Kaged Pre-Workout Elite is a great choice.

RELATED: Best Pre-Workout With Creatine

Our tester, Jacob Penner, a USA Weightlifting L-2 coach, enjoyed the flavor and gave Pre-Workout Elite a 4 out of 5 for taste. “It wasn’t overpowering or anything and tasted good, but it was very citrusy,” says Jacob.

For solubility, we gave it a 5 out of 5, since Jacob said, “You don’t need a blender here! Dissolves in water completely.”

This is impressive, especially because creatine isn’t always the most soluble ingredient.

Jacob loved the effects, giving it a 5 out of 5. “I don’t get the tingles and feel consistently high energy when I take it. Not super hyper and no crashing, either.”

At $3 per serving, this isn’t the cheapest pre-workout supplement, but if money is no issue, this is a great option. Especially when you consider it already contains creatine, so if you’re used to taking creatine separately, you can skip that on the days you use Pre-Workout Elite and save a little bit of money.

Pre-Kaged Elite is available in five flavors: Fruit Punch, Orange Mango, Glacier Grape, Caribbean Sunrise, and Strawberry Lemonade. Regardless of your taste preferences, you’re sure to find a flavor you enjoy.

For more details, you can read our full Kaged Pre-Kaged Elite Review.

If you’re looking for a product that doesn’t have creatine, we suggest Transparent Labs BULK.

Nutricost Pre-X is an affordable pre-workout at about $1 per serving. There are five flavors to choose from, each with a light and refreshing taste. Each serving contains 300 milligrams of caffeine, which is equivalent to about 3 cups of coffee.

What our tester says:

“With this one, even two hours after taking it, I didn’t have a comedown, crash, or feel tired. I could still work really hard through my sessions.”

At $0.63 to $0.83 per serving, depending on the container size, Nutricost Pre-X is the most affordable pre-workout that still delivers clinically recommended doses of ingredients proven to increase strength, energy, and focus. At such a low price point, this earns 4.5 out of 5 stars for the price per serving.

“I like that this product features a combination of nitric oxide boosters, ergogenic aids, and cognitive enhancers,” says registered dietitian Perry Nix, MS, RD, LD.

In addition to containing all the classic pre-workout ingredients, Nutricost has Alpha-GPC, which, according to Nix, is considered a nootropic “due to its ability to enhance cognitive function, potentially improving memory, and learning abilities.”

We had two competitive weightlifters try Pre-X, and both said it was one of the best pre-workouts they’ve used. “Many pre-workouts make me feel worse—like they can make me nauseous or even uneasy because of all the ingredients,” says Jacob Penner, a Level-2 weightlifting coach and president of the USAW Weightlifting State Organization for North & South Carolina. “I don’t feel like that at all with this. I’m not irritable.”

A man pours a scoop of Nutricost Pre-X Pre-Workout into a shaker bottle

Jacob, however, notes the effects might depend on your caffeine tolerance. A level scoop contains 300 milligrams of caffeine, which didn’t do much for him, but a scoop and a half did the trick. “With this, I felt motivated and focused to finish my workout, but I wasn’t stimulated very much,” he says, giving it a 5 out of 5 for overall effects.

“I’d use it again and keep using it,” he adds. “This feels like a clean product without anything stupid in it, so it’s not causing negative side effects.”

If you’re also an athlete who’s worried about what they put in their body, breathe easy. Nutricost products are third-party tested for banned and harmful substances.

Last, but certainly not least, Jacob rated the blue raspberry flavor a 5 out of 5. “I have always liked the Nutricost pre-workout for the taste, they do a really good job,” he says. (There’s also watermelon, fruit punch, grape, and peach mango).

For more, read our full Nutricost Pre-X Pre-Workout Review.

Though this has a high dose of caffeine, if you’re looking for something a bit more pump-focused, we recommend checking out Transparent Labs Stim-Free.

Jacked Factory Nitrosurge Pre-Workout is a generally positively reviewed pre-workout with 180 milligrams of caffeine and a large variety of flavor options.

What our tester says:

“I like that you still get 180 milligrams of caffeine with 1 scoop, so you get the energy but without all the other effects.”

Most people chug their pre-workouts, but former GGR Head of Content and weightlifting instructor Kate Meier says she likes to savor the taste of Jacked Factory Nitrosurge’s strawberry margarita flavor. “It is wildly delicious,” Kate says in our Nitrosurge pre-workout review. “Like, I’d drink this by the side of a pool over ice. Drink it all day.” Kate has tried dozens of pre-workouts, and Nitrosurge is one of the few that earned a 5 out of 5 on taste.

On top of that, Jacked Factory Nitrosurge comes out to just $1 per scoop if you only use one scoop per session (it’s even less than that if you put it on a monthly subscription), which earns it a 5 out of 5 for the price per serving.

As is the case with most budget-friendly products, Nitrosurge doesn’t provide quite as much oomph as the other pre-workouts on this list, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy it, and we still give the formulation a 4 out of 5.

Jacked Factory Nitrosurge being dumped into a green shaker bottle. The pre-workout container is black and green, and the person testing it is wearing a black shirt and pants.

It’s a great choice for those looking for a low-caffeine workout—it contains 180 milligrams of caffeine, which is roughly two 8-ounce cups of coffee. Another key ingredient is L-Theanine, which when combined with caffeine can help increase reaction time and energy4.

Pre-workout beginners should also consider Nitrosurge, as the caffeine dosage is a bit more manageable.

“I took this in the morning and did just one scoop, which really only gives you a half dosage of the active ingredients you’d find in other pre-workouts,” says one of our testers. “So I don’t feel itchy or hype, because ingredients like beta-alanine are halved. This is what makes it really good for a beginner who isn’t ready to get the mad-hype feeling you get with other pre-workouts.”

It also has 1.6 grams of beta-alanine, which registered dietitian Laila Ouldibbat says can help mitigate muscular fatigue and increase endurance.

Transparent Labs’ LEAN pre-workout supplement promises to deliver better endurance, power, alertness, and focus. The fat loss component is less of a guarantee with few reports of an actual change in body composition.

What our tester says:

“It was slightly bitter and not too sweet—an okay combination. Although, it didn’t dissolve completely, that didn’t affect the experience, in my opinion.”

It should be noted that no supplement, regardless of its marketing claims, is going to be the magic key for weight loss. That said, LEAN has some ingredients that, coupled with a good training plan and diet, could help support your weight loss journey.

Most notably, this pre-workout formula contains research-backed doses of iodine and zinc to assist thyroid function, which plays a huge role in regulating your metabolism. There’s also selenium to support hormone metabolism and antioxidant function.

Scooping Transparent Labs Lean into bottle

The 180 milligrams of caffeine might seem low—it’s about a cup and a half of coffee—but registered dietitian Laila Ouldibbat points out that Transparent Labs adds a compound called Infinergy that helps prolong caffeine’s performance-enhancing side effects (increased energy and stamina). In other words, the caffeine will stay in your system longer and you won’t experience a crash.

She also says the lower caffeine content won’t interfere with your body’s internal thermometer, or thermoregulation, like some people see with higher doses (this is why some people might feel a bit cold if they drink too much coffee).

RELATED: Best Pre-Workout for Weight Loss

There are also 6 grams of citrulline malate, which can support reduced muscle fatigue and improve training performance.

The solubility is one minor callout, earning a 4 out of 5. Our tester said, “It’s not opaque. Floaties were in there once mixed.”

As far as the flavor goes, Transparent Lab LEAN earns a 4 out of 5. Caine Wilkes, OLY, USAW-L1, tried it and said, “If I’m being picky, the flavor was more sour than grape, but it wasn’t an unpleasant flavor.”

For a stim-free pre-workout, it’s also a little pricey and earns 2.75 out of 5 for the overall value.

I personally found Transparent Labs’ flavors to be just fine, but they were a bit flat. I did enjoy the increased energy boost without the crash. You can find out more in our Transparent Labs LEAN review.

Formulated with all-natural ingredients, each of which are present at a high level, Legion Pulse’s stim-free pre-workout formula is a fan favorite. If you’re trying to avoid artificial flavors and chemicals, this may be a good choice.

What our tester says:

“While it mixes well, the Blue Raspberry does have a bitter taste and an unpleasant aftertaste.”

Not only does Legion Athletics Pulse Pre-Workout have 100% natural ingredients— with no artificial sweeteners, flavors, or food dyes—but all of its ingredients are present in research-backed doses to maximize energy production and strength levels.

We should warn that each two-scoop serving comes with 350 milligrams of caffeine, which might be a lot for some people, but you can easily just take one scoop. Unfortunately, that does mean you won’t get the clinical dose of ingredients like citrulline and beta-alanine, but you’re still getting a good amount of each with a half-serving. This is why we docked a few points, giving the formulation a 3 out of 5, rather than our full 5-star rating.

There are also 350 milligrams of the amino acid L-theanine, which can help boost mental awareness and counteract some of the negative side effects of caffeine.

Image of Legion Pulse in a shaker cup

Citrulline is an ingredient that’s been linked to increases in high-intensity performance, and Legion puts 8 grams in each full serving, which is the amount that most researchers use in studies.

Beta-alanine is an amino acid that has been found to support an increase muscular endurance and decrease fatigue in high-performance athletes, but it does create a skin-tingling sensation known as paresthesia (it essentially feels like you’re very itchy, though that feeling subsides after taking beta-alanine for a while).

The one callout we have is the flavor, which earns a 4 out of 5. Several of our testers agree that Legion has a bitter taste that may take some getting used to. Matt Dustin, CSCS, PN1-NC, tried the Fruit Punch.

“The initial taste isn’t bad, but it leaves a pretty bad aftertaste,” says Matt. “I used it for a week or two, but after a while, I just couldn’t finish the tub. It’s hard to get down.”

Another tester said, “It’s sweet but does have a bit of a bitter taste, and you taste the sweetener afterward. Weird aftertaste.”

Pulse might be an acquired taste, but I will say, I got this down before a strength training workout and felt all the positive effects. At $2.50 per serving, it’s not cheap and earns 2 out of 5 stars for the price per serving, but you’ll certainly feel the effects. Read more in our Legion Pulse review.

If you’re looking for another great option that’s a bit more affordable, we love Nutricost Pre-X.

Endura-Formance is formulated with all the key ingredients one would look for in a pre-workout drink. While the taste is not for everyone, most users experienced improved performance at the gym.

What our tester says:

“The flavor is fantastic: Not too sweet, yet slightly tart. Plus, there’s no weird aftertaste.”

If you’re sensitive to caffeine, you can pick up a stimulant-free pre-workout that will still provide the best pre-workout ingredients without the jitters and crash.

RELATED: Creatine vs Pre-Workout

1st Phorm Endura-Formance is one of our favorite stim-free pre-workouts (both for men and women) because it combines creatine and beta-alanine, both of which can help promote power and stamina in your workout, plus other ingredients like betaine anhydrous, Peak O2 mushroom blend and S7 antioxidant blend. The latter combo is said to maximize oxygen and nutrient delivery to muscles and fight fatigue. The formula also contains ample sodium and potassium, perfect for those who sweat a lot or are participating in endurance sports.

A scoop of 1st phorm endura-formance pre-workout in front of the container

Amanda Capritto, CPT, CES, CNC, CF-L1, CSNC is a huge fan of Endura-Formance, rating it a 4.5 out of 5 for taste. “I ordered Berry Lemonade and it’s easily one of the best-tasting supplements I’ve tried,” she explains.

Although this formula only earned a 3.75 out of 5 for formulation by our testing rubric, Amanda touts the unique ingredients—Peak O2 blend and the S7 compound—as something noteworthy.

Amanda gave this 5 out of 5 for the effects, saying, “Endura-Formance has been a great addition to my supplement stack. I love taking this before all types of workouts, but especially endurance workouts, since it has ample sodium.”

Read our 1st Phorm Endura-Formance review for more about our experience.

If you’re looking for another great formula that does include caffeine, we suggest looking at Legion Pulse.

Genius Pre stimulant-free pre-workout uses nootropics in place of caffeine to increase energy levels and awareness.

What our tester says:

“Taste-wise, this is one of the best pre-workouts I’ve ever had, and I’ve had 50+ pre-workouts.”

In terms of the best pre-workout for beginners, you generally want to start with something that isn’t over-stimulating. Genius PRE is a great introduction to anyone who’s never taken this supplement before. It doesn’t have any caffeine, so you won’t get an insane and potentially unmanageable energy boost. Instead, it gives you that “pump” feeling that many enjoy when using pre-workout.

“This is stim-free, so it doesn’t get you all jacked up. I felt almost euphoric taking this, actually. It gave me a very calm focus,” says Jacob Penner, USA Weightlifting L-2 coach. Jacob has tested more than 50 pre-workouts and rated this one a 4 out of 5 for its overall workout experience.

Scooping Genius Pre Workout into a shaker cup with water

Jacob dinged Genius PRE a point for its overall effects simply because it doesn’t give you a shot of energy (which can be good for a beginner), and because the pump didn’t last very long.

“I did a workout with a lot of upper back work, and my shoulders were so pumped up from it,” he says. “The pump was really good, but it didn’t last long. Pretty much by the time I was done lifting, the pump was fading.”

RELATED: Best Protein Shakes

Where Genius PRE shines is in its formulation, which earns 4 out of 5. It has pre-workout staples like betaine anhydrous, l-citrulline malate, and carnosyn. It also has nootropics like choline, which could explain why Jacob felt increased focus after taking it.

The price is about $1.90 per serving, which is on the expensive end. That could be due in part to this pre-workout being third-party tested. That’s an important factor (and one we pay attention to during our product review) because third-party certification means we can trust the label of the pre-workout.

Jacob also loves the flavor, and says the taste of the Blue Raspberry is “one of the best I’ve ever had,” giving it a perfect 5 out of 5.

If you’re past the beginner stage and want something that’s a bit stronger, we suggest trying El Jefe Pre-Workout.

El Jefe Pre-Workout is a high stimulant pre-workout with limited but positive customer reviews for providing energy, focus, pump, and tasting good.

What our tester says:

“I tried the Orange Creamsicle flavor and thought it was good. It reminded me of an orange smarty. It wasn’t too sweet or too tangy, although I did notice a chalky aftertaste.”

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of high-stim pre-workouts you could’ve picked, but our choice goes to El Jefe for two reasons, with the biggest being that they specify how much caffeine is in their pre-workout—300 milligrams, plus an additional 100 milligrams of a slower-releasing form of caffeine called di-caffeine malate (which stays in your system longer than regular caffeine).

The other is that it was one of the few high-stim pre-workouts we tried that we actually felt good on while taking, as opposed to the many that made us too sick to even train. That’s still a very high dose of caffeine, and the formulation earns 3 out of 5.

Scooping El Jefe Pre-Workout into a shaker cup

“It kicked in almost right away,” says Mike Raedy, a competitive weightlifter and jiu-jitsu athlete. “I didn’t feel like my skin was crawling but still had that energy. The biggest thing was the focus. This is one of the best feelings of being ‘locked in’ compared to others I’ve tried, and I’ve used 20-30 different pre-workouts.”

For the effects, we give El Jefe 4 out of 5 stars.

Caffeine, however, is the only stimulant clearly labeled on this pre-workout. We’d go into the many other stimulants found on the supplement facts label, but El Jefe uses a proprietary blend so it’s tough for us to decipher if any of them are present in research-backed amounts. It also contains some ingredients prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), so we wouldn’t advise this for any athletes who have to undergo drug testing.

It’s also a little pricey and only earns a 3 out of 5 for price and value. There are certainly more affordable options on the market.

Mike says the Orange creamsicle flavor tastes like an orange Smarty. “Not too sweet,” he says. Check out our El Jefe Pre-Workout review for more information about this product.

Transparent Labs Stim-Free Pre-Workout is an uncaffeinated pre-workout powder that will not give you the jitters or tingling commonly associated with pre-workout supplements. This pre-workout contains a blend of citrulline malate, beta-alanine, L-tyrosine, taurine, and elevATP, a compound claimed to increase ATP activity in muscle cells.

What our tester says:

“I felt focused at all times and there was no energy crash at the end of my workout.”

Transparent Labs Stim-free pre-workout is a non-stim version of their BULK and LEAN pre-workouts that you can use during later training sessions. It contains 6 grams of muscle-stimulating citrulline malate as the caffeine versions to support blood flow and nutrient delivery.

The addition of Huperzine A and L-Tyrosine helps with mental focus, a job usually done by caffeine. You also get sodium and potassium to help with hydration and may even help you get a pump, according to some comparative studies10.

Even though there’s no caffeine, we like the dosing used for the ingredients in this product, and give it a 4 out of 5 for the formulation.

An image of Transparent Labs Stim-Free pre-workout

Anthony O’Reilly, CPT, CNC, has tried most of Transparent Labs’ pre-workouts and says the stim-free version is on par with the rest of them. Amanda Capritto, GGR staff writer and product tester, said she felt the beta-alanine tingles were stronger than with other pre-workouts she’s taken, but nothing that’s going to turn her off from taking this in the future.

Our testers felt a noticeable pump and enhanced focus and earned 4 out of 5 for the effects.

One callout is the solubility, which earns 3.5 out of 5. Anthony said, “This powder gives me some persistent chunks even in a shaker bottle, which is a little bit annoying, but I think it’s worth it for the quality of the ingredients (and fine if you just down it quickly).”

All of our product testers agreed the taste was good and not overly sweet, though some noted a “chemical” aftertaste and that their shaker bottle was a bit foamy when using this powder. Read more in our Transparent Labs stim-free pre-workout review.

Onnit’s Alpha BRAIN Pre-Workout is a unique blend of ingredients that our testers enjoyed for workouts where they wanted to be focused and energized. It only comes in two flavors; the Tiger’s Blood flavor is our preferred choice.

What our tester says:

“I felt incredibly clear and prepared for my lifting session. While I didn’t get the tingles like I do with other pre-workouts, I definitely still got a pump.”

Onnit Alpha Brain pre-workout uses stevia to sweeten their pre-workout. Although stevia doesn’t always agree with people, it’s a natural product, so it’s a good choice for those who want to avoid any artificial sweeteners, colors, or preservatives.

It’s a balanced formula with caffeine, beta-alanine, citrulline, and ashwagandha that earns a 4 out of 5 for the formulation.

Jacob Penner—a USA Weightlifting Level-2 Coach and owner of North Carolina-based Endless Strength Weightlifting—had three of his teammates try Alpha Brain pre-workout and they all reached the same conclusion: “This brings great focus and clarity to your workout.”

That’s not too surprising since Alpha Brain has 200 milligrams of caffeine per scoop. You probably already know caffeine can boost energy, which is why you probably drink it, but it can also increase our mental alertness—which is what Jacob and his team felt. Unlike some strong pre-workouts, this one was a little more forgiving.

“It’s not overly stimulating; it’s more of just feeling very present and ready to do the work,” Jacob says, giving this 4 out of 5 for the effects.

The pre-workout supplement contains Dynamine, which is a substance that can prolong caffeine’s effects. For that reason, Jacob and Onnit recommend not eating any other foods or beverages that contain more than 50 milligrams of caffeine to avoid staying up late at night or potential heart issues.

Man standing in a kitchen wearing a red shirt and black jacket is reaching into a container of Alpha Brain pre-workout with an open shaker bottle on the counter next to him

What about the pumps, you ask? “Two of our testers said they got a good pump from this pre-workout,” Jacob continues. This surprised us a little bit since it only has 2.4 grams of L-Citrulline, the substance that promotes blood flow to the muscles, which can result in increased vascularity. The recommended L-Citrulline dose is closer to 6 grams.

Our biggest callout is the price—this is expensive. At $3, this only earns 1 out of 5 stars for the value. That doesn’t mean we don’t like the product; it’s just expensive.

Fuel your body with a delicious pre-workout supplement with nutrients and 14 active ingredients for an energy-boosting workout.

What our tester says:

“I like that you still get 180 milligrams of caffeine with 1 scoop, so you get the energy but without all the other effects.”

If you’ve heard of Jim Stoppani, you shouldn’t be too surprised to learn that his Pre JYM Pre-Workout was our top choice for the best pre-workout for focus. In addition to the 300 milligrams of cognitive-boosting caffeine, the expert exercise physiologist includes Huperzine A, a cognitive enhancer linked with improved memory and mental function5, and Taurine, an amino acid that can also act as a neurotransmitter, according to studies6.

Our expert product testers certainly felt the pre-workout, giving this a 5 out of 5 for the effects. “It’s almost like putting horse blinders on your head that only allow you to focus on the weights,” says Anthony O’Reilly, GGR performance editor and product tester.

Anthony also loved the Pineapple Strawberry flavor and gave it a 4.5 out of 5, saying, “It’s very tropical. I want to drink this while on a beach, but without the caffeine.”

A man drinks a JYM Supplement Pre-Workout from his shaker bottle

Jacob Penner, a USA Weightlifting Level 2 coach who has tried more than 50 pre-workouts, had a similar experience, and his entire team loves JYM Pre-Workout.

“This actually has ended up being the team’s favorite pre-workout of potentially all time, and these guys have literally used 50+ pre-workouts,” says Jacob. “It is now their go-to, even with all the other pre-workouts we have here. For the last few months, this is the one they grab most often and enjoy the most, both in taste and in effects.”

We’re also big fans of the 2 grams of creatine and the 6 grams of citrulline malate, and give the formulation 4 out of 5.

Other Pre-Workout for Men We Tested

With more than 50 pre-workouts tested by the Garage Gym Reviews team, we had quite a few pre-workouts to deliberate over when choosing the best pre-workout for men. While there are plenty of decent pre-workout supplements on the market, they all can’t make the list. Here are a few honorable mentions:

  • Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Pre-Workout: This pre-workout is inexpensive and is a good pick for someone not wanting a crazy amount of stimulants in their pre-workout. A single serving has 175 milligrams of caffeine.
  • Kodagenix Pre-Workout Gummies: These pre-workout gummies are convenient to grab and go when you’re on the move. Be ready for a high-stim experience with 300 milligrams of caffeine, as well as a sour flavor, like a Warhead candy that keeps going.
  • 4 Gauge Pre-Workout: This is a nice pre-workout formulated with creatine, coconut water powder, and red beet root powder; however, not everyone is a fan of the sour taste.

What Does Pre-Workout Do For Men?

Pre-workout is a generic name for a type of supplement that people take before going to the gym, hence the name pre- (meaning before) workout, to give them increased energy, focus, and strength.

Pre-workout is generally taken 30 minutes before you plan on lifting weights to give your body time to process the caffeine and other ingredients. Unless you’re taking a stim-free pre-workout, it’s best to only take it once per day. If you’re a night trainer, try to avoid taking pre-workout with caffeine within four hours of your bedtime.

How We Picked and Tested the Best Pre-Workout for Men

With literally hundreds of pre-workouts on the market, narrowing our list for the best pre-workout supplements for men proved to be an exhausting task. Here are a few of the criteria we used to make our decision.

  • Formulation: Does it have research-backed ingredients?
  • Dosages: Is there enough of the important ingredients in each pre-workout?
  • Effects: Did it work for our testers and customer reviewers?
  • Third-Party Testing: Has it been checked for banned substances and harmful toxins?
  • Flavor: Are there multiple flavors available for this pre-workout? Do they actually taste good?
  • Solubility: Does the powder mix well, or does it leave little clumps and a sandy texture? Does the blend begin to separate after resting for a bit, requiring some extra shakes of your bottle?
  • Cost Per Serving: Is the pre-workout a good value when you break it down to its cost per serving? We’ve found that the average pre-workout comes to $1.51 per serving, but you’re more than capable of finding cheaper offerings on the market.

Key Pre-Workout Ingredients for Men

Laila shared her thoughts on a number of ingredients commonly found in pre-workouts, and her take on their benefits.

  • L-citrulline malate: Citrulline malate, according to this 2010 study11, can help increase blood flow and boost nitric oxide levels, which can alleviate muscle soreness and delay fatigue. The study also found it increased athletic performance and stamina.
  • Beta-alanine: A 2013 study12 found that beta-alanine can enhance athletic performance by blocking lactic acid build-up in the muscles by increasing the amount of carnosine.
  • Creatine monohydrate: There are hundreds of scientific studies proving creatine’s benefits for power, strength, and endurance. This particular study in The Journal of the International Society of Sports Medicine13 showed that creatine monohydrate increased bodybuilders’ fat-free mass by an average of 2 kilograms in eight weeks.
  • Betaine anhydrous: Betaine anhydrous, according to this clinical trial14, can support protein synthesis and lead to greater strength and muscle gains.
pre-workout supplements stacked in a gym
  • L-arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate: This non-essential amino acid can help boost nitric oxide production and lead to increased strength and power output, according to this 2014 study15.
  • Caffeine anhydrous: A dehydrated form of caffeine that makes you more alert and can help increase your power and cardiovascular endurance. One 2016 study16 found that it led to better performance during resistance training when taken just before hitting the gym.
  • Taurine: Taurine supplementation, according to this 2013 study17, can help decrease fatigue and recovery time, and increase muscle contraction.
  • L-tyrosine: This compound has been linked to18 improved mood and motivation, improved endurance, and more alertness.
  • Dynamine: Similar to caffeine, Dynamine can increase alertness and energy levels and also increase the amount of oxygen delivered to your muscles.
  • Coconut water powder: Coconut water is filled with electrolytes, which can ensure you stay hydrated during high-intensity workouts.
  • Bioperine: Bioperine has been shown to19 have anti-inflammatory effects, and some studies20 show that it can increase other minerals’ bioavailability.
  • DMAE and Huperzine: DMAE can help increase the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which increases focus and alertness, while huperzine delays the breakdown of it.

Benefits of Pre-Workout for Men

If you’re wondering if taking pre-workout powder is right for you, here are some of the benefits to taking a scoop before your next training session.

Increased Energy

While caffeine isn’t the only compound present in pre-workouts, it is one of the most notorious. The increased energy not only helps you get through your workout, but it’s also been linked to increased muscle strength and stamina, and compounds like citrulline are used to support increased blood flow to muscles for improved performance and endurance.

Increased Muscle Strength

Pre-workouts often contain ingredients shown to support increased muscle strength and performance, like creatine and beta-alanine, and additionally can help with recovery.

Man performing a barbell back squat

Improved Cognition

Caffeine, in addition to things like nootropics, can help with what’s known as the mind-muscle connection, or the brain’s ability to be aware of the stimulus being placed on the muscles being trained. They can also make you more alert and in tune with your body, which can reduce the risk of injury during training.

What to Look for in a Pre-Workout for Men

Not sure which of our pre-workout products is best for you? Here’s how to narrow it down.

Scan for Important Active Ingredients

Effective pre-workouts can contain citrulline and beta-alanine, as well as caffeine and creatine, which have all been shown to support increased performance.

Stay Clear of Proprietary Blends

Some companies use proprietary blends to disguise how much of a certain ingredient is present in their supplement, which most of the time means they’re underdosing things like beta-alanine or creatine. If you see ingredients listed in a proprietary blend, it’s impossible to know how much of each ingredient you’re actually getting.

Athlete? Check Twice

Some ingredients used in pre-workouts may be banned by certain sports federations or committees due to their performance-enhancing effects. Some companies offer third-party testing to ensure their dietary supplements are clear of banned substances, though that’s not always the case. Look for the Informed Choice, NSF, or BSCG logos on the container to ensure you’re in the clear.

Assess Your Training Goals

Pre-workouts are designed to give your training a boost, but they don’t all use the same ingredients. If you’re an endurance athlete, for example, it may be best to look for a formula with added electrolytes to better support hydration. Strength athletes focused on muscle growth may prefer a pre-workout that includes creatine to help maximize gains. For beginners, we recommend easing into things with a low- or non-stim version. Matching your pre-workout to your training aspirations can help ensure you’re getting the best results possible from your chosen compound.

Stimulant Level

If you’re looking for a pre-workout with a stimulant like caffeine, it’s good to understand how much is too much. We’ve found that the average pre-workout contains 170 milligrams of caffeine, and the United States Food and Drug Administration24 currently advises that people consume no more than 400 milligrams per day. Here are the stimulant levels you can expect from a pre-workout, based on our experience and research:

  • High-Stim: 200 milligrams of caffeine or more
  • Medium-Stim: Between 100 and 200 milligrams
  • Low-Stim: Anything under 100 milligrams

Remember to account for other caffeine sources you consume throughout the day, as well, such as soda, tea, coffee, and even chocolate. These can add up if you’re looking to stay within a certain threshold.

“For most adults, 400 milligrams of caffeine per day is the upper safe limit,” Chris Mohr, PhD, RD, told us. “But how your body tolerates caffeine also matters. Some people feel wired or crash hard with half that amount. If one can get you buzzing or disrupts your sleep, it’s too much for you.”

When Do You Train?

When choosing a pre-workout supplement, it’s not just what is in the formulation but when you plan to consume it, as well. Are you an early riser who reps out deadlifts at the crack of dawn? You may benefit from a medium- or high-stim pre-workout if you can tolerate the dosage. The added energy may be a beneficial spark to get your day rolling.

Late-night warriors, on the other hand, should be more cautious since caffeine can disrupt your sleep if you take it within four hours of your bedtime. The good news is, though, that you can try a low-stim or stim-free pre-workout if you’re looking to pump iron by moonlight.

Consider Your Age

“The amount of caffeine that is considered safe for young people to consume varies depending on their age and weight,” says GGR’s medical advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM. “But the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of 12 consume no caffeine and that adolescents between the ages of 13-19 consume no more than 100 milligrams per day.”

You should check with a doctor before taking any pre-workout—regardless of your age—if you have a pre-existing medical condition, including heart issues and elevated blood pressure.

“Caffeine can lead to anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, headaches, and stomach upset,” Dr. Dasgupta says. “In the long term, caffeine can also increase the risk of anxiety and depression, difficulty sleeping, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, and heart disease.”

Understand the Side Effects

Though generally safe to use, pre-workouts can cause a handful of potential side effects. One of the most common is an itching or tingling sensation on your skin. This sensation, called paresthesia, is caused by beta-alanine and can last 30 to 60 minutes. Studies have concluded25 that paresthesia is generally harmless, and the effects can be lessened by taking a lower dose of a pre-workout.

Other side effects are often associated with your pre-workout’s caffeine dosage. Such symptoms can include an elevated heart rate, jitters, and anxiety. You may also experience insomnia, in which case you may want to reconsider the amount of caffeine you take per day, as well as the timing.

If any of these side effects persist for an extended period, be sure to consult a healthcare professional.

Read the Label for Transparency

When you’re choosing a pre-workout, look for brands that are upfront about what’s contained within the respective formulation. Prioritize products that clearly list their ingredients, as well as brands that undergo third-party testing—this helps ensure you’re getting a clean, accurately labeled formula free of banned substances and potential toxins.

Along with checking for trusted certifications like Informed Choice, NSF, or BSCG on the label, take a quick look at the brand’s website. Some companies share the independent lab results online, which can give you extra peace of mind with your purchase.

Do Men Metabolize Pre-Workout Differently?

While cis men don’t process pre-workout ingredients any differently than cis women, men oftentimes need larger quantities of caffeine, L-citrulline, and other compounds simply due to the larger amount of muscle mass.

Does Pre-Workout Pose Risks to Men’s Sexual Performance or Fertility?

The short answer is no, pre-workout will not negatively impact a cis man’s sexual performance or fertility. That is, so long as he keeps everything in moderation. A 2017 meta-analysis21 said caffeine could negatively “affect male reproductive function,” though most of the studies cited used excess amounts of caffeine and didn’t count for other variables (such as other lifestyle habits).

A 2022 study22 also said most studies that showed a negative impact only proved association and not correlation.

Best Pre-Workout for Men FAQs

What is the best pre-workout supplement for men?

We’ve tested dozens of pre-workouts, and the best one for men, in our opinion, is Transparent Labs BULK. There are multiple flavor options, it’s third-party tested, and the ingredient list is clean and transparent. We also really liked Kaged Pre-Workout Elite because of the addition of creatine and Jacked Factory Nitrosurge because of its premium taste.

Does pre-workout affect testosterone?

Most studies conducted on cis men indicate that pre-workout supplements have a minimal effect on testosterone23. On the other hand, resistance training helps improve testosterone so it might cancel out any negligible effects of the pre-workout.

Can pre-workout drinks affect sperm?

A 2017 meta-analysis21 found that caffeine, one of the main ingredients in pre-workout drinks, only negatively impacted sperm if a person had more than 800 milligrams per day.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
