proform 590t

Editor’s Note: The ProForm 590T is no longer in production. If you’re looking for an affordable treadmill from ProForm, we suggest the ProForm City L6 as the best alternative or check out our Best Budget Treadmills list.

The ProForm 590T treadmill was a part of the ProForm treadmill line including the more expensive 790T and 1050T machines. This line of treadmills has now been discontinued, and ProForm now almost exclusively sell treadmills with touchscreens (there is one exception, the City L6).

As you’ll see in our ProForm 590T review, this was an affordable treadmill with some surprisingly impressive specs. We’ll use a combination of our industry knowledge and online customer reviews to let you know how the 590T performs and what some appropriate alternatives to help you get your cardio in.

We Know ProForm Treadmills

We know treadmills. We’ve done countless treadmill reviews, and while we haven’t run on the 590T since it was discontinued, our team has tested the entire line of currently available ProForm treadmills. We know what to expect from the brand. Our team of nutrition coaches, CrossFit L1 coaches, and Certified Personal Trainers (CPT) have extensive knowledge on treadmill standards.

Looking for an Alternative to ProForm 590T?

The first place I’d recommend looking for a 590T replacement is ProForm. Their new budget treadmill, the City L6 is available for under $600, comparable to how the 590T was priced. The City L6 is more compact, with a smaller footprint and tread belt; it also folds completely flat for post-workout storage. It has less impressive specs, however, with a smaller motor, and can only reach a top speed of 8 MPH. It doesn’t have any incline abilities either. Both treadmills have iFIT compatibility.

If this doesn’t suit you, we have a number of favorite treadmills under $600. If you’re willing to spend, check out our list of the best treadmills under $1,000.

A Quick Look at the ProForm 590T

Customers were able to purchase the ProForm 590 for just under $600 while it was available. This affordable treadmill has a 2.25 continuous horsepower (CHP) motor, achieves speeds up to 10 MPH, and boasts an incline of 10%. The treadmill also has a tread belt 20 inches wide and 55 inches long. There was also iFIT compatibility and 12 built-in pre-programmed workouts. Once you are done with your workout, the 590T folds for storage.

Pros:

  • Foldable design
  • Decent incline and speed ranges
  • 300-lb weight capacity
  • Compatible with iFIT cards
  • 12 built-in workouts
  • Lifetime frame warranty

Cons:

  • 2 people required for assembly
  • Shorter tread belt at 55”
  • iFIT cards not included
  • 2.25 CHP motor isn’t the strongest for serious runners

Key Features of the ProForm 590T

The main draw of the 590T is the foldable design and iFIT compatibility. This affordable machine has almost everything you could ask for in a basic treadmill: incline, speed, 300-pound user weight capacity, 55-inch-long tread belt, and pre-programmed workouts. The 2.25 CHP Mach Z motor is less than what we would recommend for treadmills regularly used for jogging and running, but pretty standard for budget treadmills. If you’d like to regularly jog or run, we’d recommend finding a machine with a 2.5 CHP motor at the very least.

Footprint, Portability, and Durability

The 590T is 70 inches long by 34 inches wide and almost 60 inches tall. This treadmill also has a space-saver folding design to decrease the footprint while the treadmill is not in use. There are also transport wheels if you need to move the machine around. The treadmill has an industry standard 300-pound user weight capacity, which is great for a budget treadmill. Weight capacity is often where budget treadmills fall short.

The treadmill comes with a fantastic warranty that bodes well for the treadmill’s durability. There is a lifetime frame warranty, a 25-year motor warranty, and a one-year warranty for parts and labor.

Ergonomics

The tread belt is 20 inches wide by 55 inches long. This 55-inch belt is a good size for most users, however taller users will likely require a longer belt to comfortably walk and run. The running surface also features “ProResponse” cushioning, which ProForm states contains a strategic combination of firm and soft support zones to ease impact and create a comfortable run.

RELATED: Best Treadmill for Tall Runners

The treadmill console features QuickSpeed buttons to quickly change speed with the press of a single button on the hand rails. There are also quick change buttons for the incline as well. The LCD display is backlit so it is easy to see and track stats such as distance, speed, calories, and pulse.

Technology Benefits and Conveniences

The main technological draw of the 590T is the iFIT compatibility. Using iFIT workout cards, which insert directly into your treadmill console, you will be led through workouts designed by certified personal trainers (CPT). iFIT has since converted to an online fitness app platform, so I’m not sure where you might find those cards. However, when using these workout cards, your treadmill will automatically change the speed and incline.

RELATED: The Best NordicTrack Treadmills

The console includes 12 pre-programmed workout programs, like a calorie burn workout where you select the number of calories you would like to burn and the treadmill selects the time, speed, and incline.

The treadmill also features grip EKG heart rate monitoring built into the handlebars. There are integrated speakers that can be connected to via a music port for iPods and other compatible MP3 players.

Customer Reviews

Customers on sites like Amazon and Best Buy generally felt good about purchasing the 590T treadmill. They thought it was a good treadmill for the price. They shared that it performed as expected and was compact. They did have some complaints, but nothing that outweighed the affordable price. They thought the sound system wasn’t very loud and the heart rate monitoring grips were inaccurate.

The biggest complaint people had was that the treadmill is required that be plugged into a surge suppressor and then a grounded outlet. Customers thought that if this was required, the surge suppressor should be included with the treadmill.

Final Verdict of Our ProForm 590T Review

The ProForm 590T treadmill is an affordable treadmill with great specs without many of the extra features of more modern treadmills. This folding treadmill has incline and speed abilities, an industry standard 300-pound user weight capacity, preset workouts, and a 55-inch tread belt. If you’re looking for a basic treadmill it stinks that this machine was discontinued. Check out currently available treadmills in this price range.
