A close-up view of someone strapping their feet into the foot cradles of a rowing machine

Like other types of cardio equipment, the best rowing machines come in several different styles and run the gamut of price ranges. Unique to the world of rowers are water rowing machines; they truly mimic the feel of rowing a boat on the water, unlike magnetic rowing machines or air rowing machines. If you’re interested in that real-water feel, keep reading for our guide to the best water rowing machines.

Using our proprietary rowing machine testing methodology, our team of certified personal trainers, CrossFit coaches, and fitness equipment experts curated this list of the best water rowers based on our experience with over 30 rowing machines, as well as collective decades of experience with cardio machines of all types. In testing out rowers, we looked at several aspects, scoring each between 1 and 5 stars. Such factors include:

  • Footprint and Portability: We check the dimensions of a rower while in use and while stored, giving at least a 3 out of 5 to rowing machines that can be easily moved by one person and stored vertically.
  • Durability: We judge the longevity of a rowing machine based on its structural components and stability, giving a 3-out-of-5 score to rowers with little shaking during a workout and weight capacities above 250 pounds.
  • Adjustability and Ergonomics: Can the rower accommodate different users comfortably? A score of 3 out of 5 or higher means the rower can handle users from 5’2” up to 6’4”, and it has adjustable footbeds.
  • Tech Capabilities: The amount of tech can vary between rowing machines, but the minimum to earn a 3 out of 5 is a rower with a basic console to show distance, calories, and split times. Touchscreen displays with streaming capabilities will score higher here.

Along with these detailed testing notes and examinations, I talked with exercise physiologist Chris Mohr, Ph.D., RD about the benefits of rowing machines and what to look for when selecting a profile for home use. In 2024, we helped over 3,500 people find the rowing machine best suited for their preferences—water rowers included—so I’m confident that we can help you, too.

This machine is aesthetically-pleasing (which is an often overlooked attribute for equipment that lives in peoples homes) and the programming is interesting and engaging. If you’re looking for a water-powered rowing machine and want programming that’s different from what’s typically offered, you’ll be a fan of the Ergatta.

What our tester says:

“The screen has beautiful hi-definition graphics that really intensify the ‘gaming’ experience. I feel like I’m playing an old-school, first-person arcade video game.”

At a Glance

  • Higher-end water rowing machine with sharp aesthetics
  • Weight capacity well-above the average
  • Gamified workouts on a 21” HD touchscreen
  • Warranty matches the standard for water rowers

They say you get what you pay for, and it stands true with the aptly named Ergatta Luxe; although it holds a premium price, you get a good amount of features with this water rowing machine. Along with a solid build and sharp look, you get gamified workouts presented on a 21-inch screen—all reasons why we put the Ergatta Luxe as our best overall pick.

“In a nutshell, the Ergatta Luxe gives off a luxurious feeling and design,” GGR founder Coop Mitchell told me, who rated the water rower at 4 out of 5 for value. “From the handle’s grip to the smooth slide of the seat, this cherrywood rower is very distinctive.”

Ergonomics: 4/5

A close-up view of someone strapping their feet into the foot cradles of a rowing machine
While the handles and seat are comfortable, the low seat may be troublesome for users with mobility issues.

Dynamic Programming: 5/5

Man in shorts, a t-shirt, and a baseball hat using the Ergatta Rower in a warehouse
There’s plenty of gamified and instructional programming on the Ergatta Luxe, but it’ll cost a monthly membership that varies in price depending on your package.

Durability: 4/5

Even though it has a whopping 500-pound weight capacity, the wood frame may not be as durable as a metal frame.

Why We Like The Ergatta Luxe

Ergatta is a wooden water rowing machine, like many water rowers, but with more tech capabilities and built-in programming thanks to the 21-inch HD touchscreen. The Ergatta platform doesn’t have trainer-led rowing workouts like you see from most competitors (like Hydrow or Echelon), but it does use various arcade-style modules—as well as open and scenic row workouts—to keep you on track toward reaching your goals.

According to Coop, who has extensively tested the Ergatta rower and other smart rowers, “The way the platform is using programming to keep you on pace and to push you is very smart.” Accordingly, he rates the programming at 5 out of 5, and states, “I like how simple Ergatta (and the programming) is. There isn’t a ton to fiddle with, and the data it provides is great.”

The build quality on Ergatta is strong, sturdy, and natural, boasting a 500-pound weight capacity. Wood, in general, won’t prove as durable as steel over time, but Coop told me that the Ergatta Luxe has a very substantial build, nevertheless. The rower gets a 4 out of 5 for its durability.

I also like the more natural feel of the water-powered resistance. The swish of a water-based rower is significantly more pleasant and realistic than the air or magnetic resistance of other rowers.

Coop Mitchell, GGR founder and expert product tester

Alternatives

One of the best parts about Ergatta is that it’ll arrive at your doorstep fully assembled—all you have to do is add water. The resistance system is based on the tank’s fan blades pushing against water; to create more resistance, add more water. As is the case with water rowers, though, there isn’t really a feasible means to adjust resistance mid-workout. As such, this Ergatta profile earns a 3 out of 5 for customizations.

Since it is a water rower, the Ergatta Luxe will require a bit more maintenance and routine cleaning than your typical air or magnetic rower. That said, most people investing in a water rowing machine feel that it’s worth it for the more realistic rowing experience. We can’t ignore the higher price tag, though—at nearly $2,500, it may simply be outside of some folks’ budgets.

If the price of the Luxe is too much, check out the Ergatta Lite. This lighter, smaller rower is less expensive than the Ergatta Luxe while still providing the same gamified workout experience as its bigger brother.

Testing Breakdown

The Ergatta Luxe scored fairly well, all-around, but the water-based resistance doesn’t allow for a lot of customization—a common issue with most water rowing machines.

The WaterRower Natural is an excellent rower that uses (drumroll) water instead of air as its main mode of resistance. This closely simulates the resistance you would receive in real-life rowing, and it sounds pretty amazing, too.

If durability is a top priority with your home gym essentials, then the WaterRower Natural Rowing Machine will be right up your alley. Considered by many as the original water rowing machine, the WaterRower’s classic design is constructed from natural wood and boasts a 700-pound weight capacity.

When it comes to durability, we generally prefer a metal frame over wooden structures, but the WaterRower has a nearly 40-year-long reputation supporting its stance as a structurally sound fitness machine. GGR Everything lead reviewer Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC, rates the durability at 5 out of 5, stating, “There wasn’t any point during my workouts when I felt unstable on the rower. It didn’t shake at all, either.”

Footprint & Portability: 4/5

A Person lifts a WaterRower for vertical storage.
Despite its above-average length, the WaterRower can be stored vertically while not in use, thus saving athletes a decent amount of space between workouts.

Durability: 5/5

Our tester on a WaterRower Original.
The WaterRower features a solid natural wood construction, boasting a high weight capacity of 700 pounds.

Tech Capabilities: 4/5

Console on the WaterRower Original
With an additional purchase of the ComModule, the basic console allows Bluetooth connectivity with a myriad of rowing apps and programs.

Why We Like The WaterRower

Although the WaterRower itself doesn’t have any built-in workout modules, there are many third-party options for dynamic programming. The WaterRower’s S4 monitor is not innately Bluetooth-enabled—just ANT+ compatible for heart rate monitor connectivity—but the WaterRower ComModule (sold separately for $100) can turn your S4 monitor into a Bluetooth device.

If you take that route, you can then essentially use any of the best rowing apps, including WaterRower Connect, which turns your phone or tablet into a secondary performance monitor. You can even purchase an add-on for a touchscreen monitor; I think it’s great that customers can choose how tech-enabled they want their WaterRower to be, which is why we rate the tech capabilities at 4 out of 5.

At about 82 inches long, the WaterRower takes up roughly the same amount of space as any rowing machine. What separates this machine from the masses, though, is that it can store vertically when not in use, earning it a 4-out-of-5 rating for its footprint and portability.

It’s nice and easy to move around with front transport wheels, too—although some customers say they leave it out in their living room because of its appealing aesthetics given the wooden construction available in different finishes and wood stains.

I think this is one of the top experiences I’ve ever had rowing on a rower. I also love how the WaterRower sounds—it’s almost meditative to me.

Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC, GGR Everything lead reviewer

Alternatives

Although we rated the tech capabilities fairly high, Lindsay wasn’t entirely happy with the WaterRower’s standard console. “The monitor is just basic and not really user-friendly,” Lindsay said to me. “I had a hard time getting to the programs I wanted to use, and there’s not a lot of interaction offered.”

RELATED: WaterRower vs Concept2

Adding water to the tank was also an issue, according to Lindsay. The hole for the water tank is directly underneath a wooden beam, so it’s tough to maneuver a funnel or hose to the prescribed opening. Our team eventually bought an attachment for a garden hose to fill up the water tank, but there was some water spilled in the process. As such, we rate the customizations at 3 out of 5 since the water is the primary resistance.

If you’re OK with an air rower, it might be worth looking at the Concept2 RowErg, which also has a basic monitor. However, the simple screen is highly customizable and easy to use.

Testing Breakdown

The WaterRower scored pretty well in our testing, although it earned a 3 out of 5 for programming since the machine provides a slim workout library by itself (buying the ComModule opens up the programming options a lot, though).

Vs. The Average

Depending on where it’s purchased from, the WaterRower typically costs at or around $1,200, which is below the average cost for a water rowing machine. I wouldn’t call it budget-priced, but its solid warranty and high weight capacity certainly make it have good value.

At a Glance

  • High-end rower using water resistance
  • Features subscription-based programming
  • Weight capacity matches the average water rower
  • Warranty matches the average for water rowing machines

The CITYROW Max is a unique indoor rowing machine and our pick for the best smart water rower, simply because it’s one of few machines that features trainer-led workouts including live and on-demand classes within its own service. We rate the tech capabilities at a 4.5 out of 5—a near-perfect score since it requires a CITYROW app subscription of $29.99 per month (or $299.99 per year) to get the most out of the 19.5-inch HD touchscreen.

Despite its added cost, the programming is legit and offers interactive classes beyond just rowing. You can find modules dedicated to strength training, yoga, HIIT, and more. “I love that they provide different types of programming and make the screen able to swivel for workouts off the rower,” adds Coop Mitchell, GGR founder.

Tech Capabilities: 4.5/5

Coop checking out the programming on the CITYROW GO Max.
Even though programming access costs a monthly fee, the touchscreen swivels for easier viewing and the workout library caters to rowing as well as other training disciplines.

Footprint & Portability: 4/5

man standing up a water rowing machine vertically
Without water, the CITYROW Max Rower weighs just 61 pounds, making it easy to move. You can store this rower vertically when not in use, as well.

Durability: 3.5/5

Coop testing the CITYROW GO MAX rowing machine.
While it features a solid 375-lb weight capacity, the CITYROW Max uses some wood in its construction, which isn’t as durable as steel.

Why We Like The CITYROW Max

Simply put, the CITYROW Max is a tech behemoth. It features a large, sweat-resistant screen that can connect to Bluetooth headphones and heart rate monitors without issue. You can use the chest strap style or sync your rower to your Apple Watch or another fitness tracker.

The studio programming is well done with high-quality cameras and nice lighting, too. The touchscreen is snappy, according to Coop, and there are physical volume rocker buttons on the side for more intuitive toggling.

It has an all-black design, as opposed to the cherrywood, ash wood, or other natural looks commonly found on water rowers. In all honesty, the aesthetics are more comparable to traditional rowers, like the Concept2 RowErg.

This rowing machine arrives almost fully assembled; all you’ll have to do is hook up the touchscreen and fill the water tank to get the full rowing experience. Still, it does come in three separate boxes, which may or may not show up at the same time, so we rate the delivery and assembly at a 4 out of 5.

The CITYROW Max’s touchscreen is very responsive with a clear picture. I love that the screen can swivel if you are wanting to do a class off of the rowing machine, and that new classes and programs are added frequently; it reminds me of Peloton and other big brands.

Coop Mitchell, GGR founder and expert product tester

Alternatives

With a combination of American ash wood and metal in its frame, the CITYROW Max Rower supports a weight capacity of up to 375 pounds—well above the 250-pound industry standard for all indoor rowers. Still, the wood construction led Coop to rate the durability at 3.5 out of 5, since a metal frame will (typically) last longer and acquire fewer scratches or marks down the road. That said, “As of now, I don’t have any complaints, and I love the aesthetics,” he explained to me.

This is definitely a pricier water rower at $2,199, plus the CITYROW monthly app subscription. With the monthly payment of about $30, you do get access to a constantly updated library of low-impact, full-body workouts, though, so it may still be worth it to some users.

If you’re looking for a different programming experience, check out the Ergatta Luxe, which uses gamified programming instead of trainer-led workouts.

The Ergatta Lite is made in the USA and handcrafted from oak. It features a 17.3-inch touchscreen display that is Bluetooth and Apple watch compatible. The Ergatta membership is optional, but with it you will have access to game-based workouts, scenic workouts, form check with AI coaching, live racing, and more.

What our tester says:

“It feels super sturdy even though it’s a lightweight machine.”

At a Glance

  • Water rowing machine priced around the average
  • Below-average weight capacity
  • Programming displayed on a 17.3” HD touchscreen
  • Warranty matches the standard for water rowers

Beginners and advanced rowers alike who love a good interactive home fitness experience will love what the Ergatta Lite has to offer. Basically a smaller, less expensive version of the Ergatta Luxe, the Lite provides the same gamified workout library with live racing, challenges, form feedback, personalized workouts, and more. You can even track your stats and metrics to show your progress over time.

We rate the tech capabilities of the Ergatta Lite at 4 out of 5 given the aforementioned programming as well as its 17.3-inch HD touchscreen. “I like it so much that I’m now considering the Ergatta Lite for my own home gym,” GGR Everything lead reviewer Lindsay Scheele told me after testing the rower. “I think my kids would like it, too, especially with the game-based workouts.”

Footprint & Portability: 4.5/5

Tech Capabilities: 4/5

The 17.3-inch screen provides plenty of workouts, but you can also connect fitness trackers and headphones to the rower via Bluetooth.

Ergonomics: 3.5/5

Ergatta Lite foot straps
The smaller frame features more narrow footplates and a lower seat height, which may not be conducive for people with bigger bodies.

Why We Like The Ergatta Lite

We had multiple people try out the Ergatta Lite beyond Lindsay, with one tester being 6 feet tall and weighing over 200 pounds. Despite its lightweight frame, Lindsay rated the durability at 4 out of 5 given its stability and integrity regardless of who was taking on a workout.

Water rowers provide a more natural rowing experience—much more akin to on-water rowing than magnetic or air resistance—but they also commonly provide a nicer machine profile. The Ergatta Lite is no different with a beautiful oak frame that makes it look less like a piece of fitness equipment and more like a work of art.

Lindsay is a huge fan of the programming provided by Ergatta, rating the dynamic programming at 5 out of 5. You’ll have to pay an extra $39 monthly to get the full experience, but Lindsay has told me it’s worth the investment.

The machine might be lightweight, but it’s super sturdy. I didn’t experience any shaking or wobbling while working out.

Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC, GGR Everything lead reviewer

Alternatives

The smaller frame of the Ergatta Lite may not be ideal for taller, larger athletes, as the seat height of 11 inches is fairly low to the ground. Additionally, the footbeds are fairly narrow, which may not work for a broader person—like myself. As such, Lindsay rates the adjustability and ergonomics at 3.5 out of 5.

Additionally, while water rowers can provide a sleek aesthetic to your home gym studio, they’ll also require some routine maintenance—namely, changing and cleaning the water tank every now and then. Keep that in mind when purchasing any water rower, not just the Ergatta Lite.

Trying to find the least amount of maintenance? You’ll probably prefer a magnetic rower, like the NordicTrack RW900, which still has great interactive programming through the iFIT training platform.

Testing Breakdown

Like many water rowing machines, the Ergatta Lite lacks customizations when it comes to adjusting intra-workout resistance. Otherwise, it scored pretty well in our testing.

At a Glance

  • Budget-friendly water rowing machine
  • Weight capacity is below-average
  • Basic monitor that can connect to the SunnyFit app
  • Warranty is below the standard for water rowers

Sunny Health & Fitness makes some of our favorite budget rowing machines, albeit with magnetic resistance. After having tested dozens of pieces of equipment from this brand, it just felt right to include the Sunny Health and Fitness Obsidian Surge 500 water rowing machine as our best budget water rower.

Although we’ve yet to test this rower, we’re confident in our experience with other Sunny Health and Fitness products, as well as our expertise in rowing machines. Most notable features with the Obsidian Surge include its metal frame and 300-pound weight capacity. That’s above the industry standard of 250 pounds—and downright impressive to find in a budget rower—earning it a 4 out of 5 for durability.

Durability: 4/5

With a metal frame and 300-lb weight capacity, the Obsidian Surge is a fairly sturdy budget rower.

Footprint & Portability: 4/5

Man moving the Obsidian Surge 500
The water rower weighs about 92 pounds, can be moved on transport wheels, and stores upright when not in use.

Tech Capabilities: 3.5/5

A woman rowing on the Obsidian Surge 500
The console for the Surge is simple, but it can connect to Sunny Health & Fitness’ free app for programs and workouts.

Why We Like The Obsidian Surge 500

The Obsidian Surge 500 should suit all fitness levels fine, but it’s an especially great option for beginners who aren’t sure if they want to continue rowing long-term thanks to its palatable sub-$500 price point. We rate the value at 5 out of 5; it’s not as inexpensive as budget magnetic rowers, but it’s fairly cost-effective when compared to other water rowing machines.

This budget-friendly water rowing machine features a hydro-fan with 16 blades, a lightweight but sturdy steel frame, pivoting pedals, and front-mounted wheels for transport and easy storage. Weighing in at 92 pounds without water, the Obsidian Surge can be moved around fairly easily, earning a 4 out of 5 for its footprint and portability.

It also has a large, contoured, padded seat and an LCD monitor that tracks total time, meters, strokes per minute, calories, and more—although some customer reviews say the monitor isn’t as accurate as higher-end rowers. We still rate the tech capabilities at a 3.5 out of 5, as the rower can connect to Sunny Health and Fitness’ app for more workout options and programming.

Sunny Health & Fitness provides decent entry-level options that’ll get the job done for beginners looking to try indoor rowing, but aren’t sure if they’ll keep up with it long term.

Amanda Capritto, CPT, CES, CNC, CF-L1, CSNC, GGR Senior Staff Writer

Alternatives

Many budget rowers typically have a smaller footprint and frame, and the Sunny Health and Fitness Obsidian Surge is no different with its smaller-than-average construction. In particular, the Obsidian Surge 500 has a short slide rail of 42 inches—far shorter than the 54 inches found on Concept2 rowers, which are often considered the “gold standard” in rowing machines. Because of its shorter slide rail, the Obsidian Surge 500 earns a 3 out of 5 for adjustability and ergonomics, since it likely won’t cater to taller users very well.

The Surge 500 also earns a 3 out of 5 in customizations, since it uses water as the resistance mechanism. Other than trying to row harder, you’ll have to add or remove water to adjust the resistance, which isn’t a quick toggle like you’d find on magnetic or air rowers.

If you want a water rower that can accommodate taller users, check out the WaterRower. The website says the rower can support people up to 2 meters tall (about 6 feet, 6 inches), but you can also upgrade to the brand’s XL rails if you’re taller.

Testing Breakdown

Looking at the specs, the Obsidian Surge 500 scores well in our initial research as a budget-friendly water rower. However, we’ll adjust these scores as soon as we get some hands-on testing done.

Vs. The Average

Priced under $500, the Obsidian Surge 500 is well below the average price for a water rowing machine. With that smaller price, though, comes a below-average warranty and weight capacity (although 300 pounds is still decent for a budget rower).

Other Water Rowing Machines We Researched and Tested

We haven’t tested all of the rowing machines below yet, but based on their popularity on Amazon and other reviews sites, we think they’re worth pointing out and briefly covering until we can get our hands on them:

  • YOSUDA Water Rowing Machine: The YOSUDA Water Rower is a solid budget-friendly rowing machine, although some of our testers didn’t find the rower’s seat and footholds to be the most comfortable.
  • XTERRA ERG600W Water Rower: This water rowing machine is similar to the Sunny Health and Fitness Obsidian Surge 500, our top pick for budget water rowers, in that it has a steel frame and small LCD monitor that tracks basic rowing metrics.
  • Stamina Elite Wave Water Rowing Machine: I wasn’t impressed after my initial experience with Stamina rowing machines, specifically the 35-1405 ATS Air Rower. However, based on the product description (and the price tag of about $600), the Stamina Elite Wave Water Rowing Machine seems to have much sturdier construction.
  • MERACH 950 Rower: While our testers had great workouts on this water rowing machine, the MERACH’s programming falls a bit short when compared to other water rowers on this list. You can find out more in our MERACH 950 Rower review.

How We Picked The Best Water Rowing Machines

Our roster of product testers includes several industry-certified personal trainers, CrossFit coaches, functional training specialists, elite athletes, corrective exercise specialists, and equipment know-it-alls.

GGR crew member trying out the CITYROW.
Our tester on the CITYROW Maz Rower

As total gear junkies and fitness enthusiasts, we invest our efforts in in-depth brand and market research as well as hands-on testing to bring you the best guides, including this list of the best water rowing machines. Here are the criteria we judge rowing machines by, and how we score each aspect:

  • Footprint and Portability: Rowing machines vary in size and storage capabilities, but we give ratings of, at minimum, 3 out of 5 to rowers that can be moved by one person and be stored vertically. Higher scores can go to particularly compact rowers or foldable machines.
  • Delivery and Setup: How smooth is the process from placing your order to beginning your workouts? To earn a 3 out of 5, a rower should be assembled by two people within two hours with little to no issues, and at least curbside delivery should be available.
  • Durability: To gauge a rower’s durability, we look at the weight capacity, materials, and construction, as well as the amount of wobble or shaking experienced during training sessions. A 3 out of 5 or higher means that the weight capacity is at least 250 pounds and there was little shaking during our workouts. A higher score often indicates higher weight capacities and well-built, stable rowing machines.
  • Adjustability and Ergonomics: For this category, we look at the comfort level during your workout and how well the rowing machine can accommodate a variety of users; we’ll take a look at the handle grips and reach, the seat height, the slide rail length, and foot straps to determine a score. Adjustable footbeds as well as accommodations for users between 5 feet, 2 inches and 6 feet, 4 inches can lead to a score of 3 out of 5 or higher.
  • Customizations: How well can you adjust the intensity of your workout? We rate customizations at a 3 out of 5 if the rower has some type of adjustable resistance. Water rowers typically get middle-of-the-road scores here, as the only way to adjust resistance (aside from rowing harder) is typically adding more or less water to the water tank—a slower, more burdensome task than flipping a damper on an air rower or selecting a different magnetic resistance setting.
  • Tech Capabilities: We award scores of 3 out of 5 to rowing machines with simple consoles that track basic metrics—time, distance, splits, stroke rate, and calories. However, a higher score can go to rowers with touchscreen displays compatible with digital programming and streamable apps, built-in speakers, and Bluetooth or Wi-Fi capabilities.
  • Dynamic Programming: For programming, we score a rower at 3 out of 5 if it has, at least, a few preset workouts, but top scores go to rowers with access to interactive programming and extensive workout libraries.
  • Value: Here, we look at the features offered by a rower and the cost of the cardio machine to make sure it’s priced fairly. A 3 out of 5 means a rowing machine is priced fairly, but may lack features of comparable rowers. Top scores go to rowers priced competitively and with a good amount of features and extras.
  • Customer Experience: This is a score reflecting the warranty, policies, and customer service from a company. A 3 out of 5 means a rower has 0% financing available, a five-year frame warranty (or longer), and a 30-day return window. Customer service is also prompt to respond to inquiries and can be reached through multiple channels—phone, email, or via contact form.
  • Customer Reviews: We pull this score directly from averages across the brand’s website and/or online retailers like Amazon. However, we also check out customer reviews to see how the community’s experience with each rowing machine compares to our experience from testing—we’ll factor those reviews into our scoring.

When testing rowing machines, our team completes a variety of workouts, including long endurance workouts, HIIT rowing workouts, and everything in-between. We make sure to take full advantage of the features available on the machine to paint the best picture. After our testing and scoring, we’ll average out the results to create an overall rating for each rower. These final tallies help determine our picks for each best-of list we publish.

Benefits Of Water Rowing Machines

Water rowing machines, in general, provide all the benefits of rowing machines—namely, improved cardiovascular health1. They also allow for a full-body workout that incorporates both cardio and resistance training simultaneously.

man moving a water rowing machine
Our tester moving an Ergatta rowing machine through the GGR testing center

Exercise physiologist Chris Mohr, Ph.D., RD, explains, “Rowing machines allow for a full-body cardio workout, improving both cardiovascular fitness and endurance. The resistance on each rower can also help you build strength in the upper and lower body, plus they enhance flexibility and coordination.”

Rowing is also considered a low-impact exercise, especially when compared to other cardio exercises like running on a treadmill. A 2022 randomized controlled trial2 showed that patients with mild knee osteoarthritis were able to improve their muscle and joint strength after a 12-week rowing program. If your joints bother you, rowing can be an effective way to train.

Chris adds, “Rowing is a low-impact exercise, which means it is easier on your joints. Even with less impact on the joints, it still offers effective calorie burn and muscle conditioning.”

There are also a few benefits of water rowing machines that you won’t get on other types of rowers, including:

  • These rowing machines offer a realistic, on-the-water feeling. As much as air rowers and magnetic rowers claim to mimic the feeling of rowing in a real paddle boat, they don’t…At least, not as much as water rowers do. “The smooth resistance and the sound of water make it a more immersive workout during home use, too” adds Chris.
  • Water rowers are often visually appealing pieces of equipment. Many people buy water rowers, specifically, so they can keep the equipment in a living area without it being an eyesore.
  • You potentially can have unlimited resistance. Water rowing machines don’t have defined resistance levels like magnetic rowing machines do. When using a water rower, the faster and harder you row, the more the resistance increases due to the flywheel interacting with water in the tank. You can also increase or decrease the amount of water in the rower to further adjust the resistance.

How To Use A Water Rowing Machine

Water rowing machines operate just like other types of rowing machines. No matter which type of rower you are using, your rowing stroke should include four steps:

  • Catch: This is the beginning of the stroke, where you’d feel the most resistance from the flywheel. In this position, your heels may want to lift up a bit, and your torso should be leaned slightly forward.
  • Drive: The heels drive into the footbeds and you drive back through the legs, maintaining a solid posture and finishing just before locking out the knees.
  • Finish: Here, you’ll lean back slightly and pull with the arms to bring the handle to your torso, trying to keep the belt or chain moving in a straight line.
  • Recovery: This reverses the finish and drive steps to get back to the catch position. Let your arms extend, lean forward, and bend the legs and hips to resume the catch position.

You can find an in-depth explanation of rowing technique, plus a video demo and workout, in our guide to how to use a rowing machine.

What To Look For In A Water Rowing Machine

Is a water rowing machine right for you? “There are a few things to consider with the type of resistance system of a rower—magnetic, air, or water,” mentions Chris Mohr, Ph.D., RD. “If you’re looking for a quieter workout, a magnetic rower might be better. However, an air or water rower offers a more dynamic feel.”

RELATED: Water Rower Vs Magnetic Rower

I’m willing to bet you’ve landed on this page because you’re in the market for the immersive experience and sleek aesthetics that water rowers can provide. In your hunt for the best water rowing machine, here are some factors worth considering prior to checkout.

Price

Generally speaking, water rowers can be pricier than your typical rowing machine. A higher-end water rower will cost, on average, $1,500 or more, with the most technologically advanced models costing upward of $2,000. Mid-range water rowers will run you roughly $1,000, while budget-friendly options hover around the $400 to $700 price range.

Before you purchase a water rowing machine, consider your budget and how much money you’re willing to put into your cardio equipment. Also, remember that rowers with interactive programming often will require a monthly subscription to get the most out of the available workout libraries.

If you’re not wanting to drop a couple grand all at once, you can also check if a rowing machine can be financed; some companies offer 0% financing—but you’ll have to pre-qualify for it.

Construction and Durability

If equipment longevity is a top concern, look for solid natural wood water rowers or water rowers with steel frames. Make sure to read product descriptions carefully and differentiate “solid natural wood” from “solid wood,” which can often mean MDF (medium-density fiberboard). Water rowing machines made of engineered wood like MDF aren’t bad, but they most likely will not last as long as their real wood or steel counterparts.

Console and Programming

How much tech are you looking for in your water rower? Some water rowing machines have large, interactive touchscreen displays, while others sport a basic LCD monitor. In general, those with HD displays have built-in programming or function in unison with a workout app subscription. Those with LCD monitors, on the other hand, typically have little to no built-in programming, but may be Bluetooth-compatible with various digital platforms. Either way, you’ll want a console that, at least, tracks your total time and total meters rowed.

Space and Dimensions

By nature, most water rowing machines are bigger, bulkier, and heavier than their air and magnetic counterparts. Less expensive models tend to take up less space (a smaller machine means a lower cost of production). If space is a concern, consider a budget-friendly model or look for profiles that store upright or fold.

Adjustability and Ergonomics

A rower is no good if it doesn’t fit your body. For example, people who are tall or who have long legs should pay extra attention to the slide rail length of a rowing machine, as this will determine whether or not they are able to reach full leg extension—54 inches is considered the “gold standard” of slide rail length as it can accommodate a wide range of athlete heights.

Also, look at the type and number of adjustments on the foot cradles, console adjustability, handle angle, seat contour, and the height at which the slide rail sits above the ground. This would also be a great time to check out some customer reviews to see if any users experienced issues due to their height.

Ease of Use and Maintenance

Water rowing machines require more maintenance than magnetic or air rowing machines. Specifically, you’ll need to keep the water clean and fresh so the tank doesn’t grow mold or bacteria over time. Ideally, you won’t have to change the water more than every four to six months. Some brands offer water purification tablets, as well, to extend maintenance intervals.

FAQs About the Best Water Rowing Machines

Are water rowing machines any good?

Whether or not a water rowing machine is worth it depends on your fitness goals, as well as what you’re looking for in a cardio machine. Still, water rowers have some unique features that make them stand out from air and magnetic rowers. For one, water rowers can be better for mimicking the real-life feeling of rowing on actual water. Many water rowing machines also have a sharp design that makes them less of an eyesore if placed in a shared living space.

What are the disadvantages of a water rower?

Although there’s a lot to like with water rowing machines, there are a few cons to consider before settling on a specific machine. For example, water rowing machines can sometimes be louder than magnetic rowers, and the only way to adjust the resistance on these machines is adding or removing water from the tank.

Water rowing machines will also require more maintenance, as you’ll need to replace the water every few months to prevent any growth of algae, bacteria, or mold.

How often should I change the water in my water rower?

How often you should change the water in your water rower depends on the brand and model you have. Each manufacturer should include guidelines in the owner’s manual, so be sure to check there for proper maintenance protocols.

What is the best water rowing machine?

The ideal water rower for you will depend on the space in your home gym, along with your budget, needs, and fitness goals. That said, our top pick for the best water rowing machine for most folks is the Ergatta Luxe, which has interactive, gamified workouts for a range of fitness levels, a high weight capacity, and a natural wood construction that can look great in most living spaces.
