hoka bondi 8 walking shoes

Everyone deserves a comfortable pair of walking shoes, whether you’re romping around town or trekking through some nature trails. However, as we get older, what we consider a comfortable shoe for walking or all-day wear might change.

For this reason, we’re rounding up the best walking shoes for senior citizens so you can make a decision for yourself (or the older adult in your life) based on your unique needs. We’re going to lay out some options that will suit folks with heel pain, flat feet, high arches, overpronation, wide feet, and general foot problems.

We’ve Laced Up Dozens of Walking Shoes

The expert product testers here at Garage Gym Reviews collectively have several decades’ worth of experience in the strength and conditioning arena, which means we’ve tested tons of walking and running shoes over the years. In fact, we’re a group of fitness professionals ranging from Olympic athletes to certified personal trainers—so we know a thing or two about what type of footwear makes for a good walking, running, or Weightlifting shoe.

We think our industry knowledge helps us deliver you the most accurate information so you can make smart decisions with your money, especially for senior citizens. That’s why we decided to round up the best walking shoes for seniors to help older folks cut through the online chatter.

For this roundup, we reached out to Daniel Pledger, Podiatrist and Founder of ePodiatrists, which is a website dedicated to making quality podiatric care (and resources) more accessible.

GGR product tester and writer, Anthony O’Reilly tested the HOKA Bondi 8 and reports exceptional comfort by saying, “these are my go-to choice when I want to do my 10-mile walks,” he says. Although Anthony is not a senior citizen, we think the number of miles he averages is terrific insight on how these will hold up and feel for all-day comfort.

Bottom Line

Hoka’s Men’s Gaviota 4 stability running shoe provides maximum cushioning and stability in a lightweight shoe and is appreciated by users for its comfort and performance.

The HOKA Gaviota 4 is a solid choice for older folks who deal with plantar fasciitis due to the brand’s signature J-Frame design. The J-Frame basically means that you’ll have extended heel support and extra arch support to reduce overpronation—among other factors, lack of these two things can lead to plantar fasciitis pain.

For even more foot pain relief, be sure to check out our roundup of the best running socks—because happy feet start with your socks.

GGR editor and expert product tester Nicole Davis has walked dozens of miles in the Gaviota 4 model. “[They are] super stable, comfortable, and overall have excellent cushioning,” she says. “They are plush but with great stability. If my feet are in a little pain, these are the shoes I put on,” Nicole adds. The plush material is seen through the tongue and upper portion of the shoe, too.

In addition to comfort, “the shoe features a wider base that also helps promote stability and balance,” says Daniel. “It’s also lightweight with a breathable upper making it a great choice for seniors who want a supportive shoe without sacrificing flexibility or breathability.”

We also like the fact there is a heel pull tab making it easier for seniors to get these HOKAs on and off.

The foam padding on the tongue gives it more cushion and the ergonomic stride design helps anyone walk with a little more ease after slipping this shoe on. The material is also easy to care for and the rubber outsole has a superior grip helping you to feel secure and stable with each step.

The Orthofeet Francis Walking Shoe is another APMA approved sneakers with an adjustable and customizable arch support, which helps seniors relieve foot pain from diabetes and arthritis.

The Francis Walking Shoe features the brand’s “signature Ortho-Cushion system, which offers exceptional cushioning and support, along with the ability to customize the fit using removable insoles,” says Daniel. The orthopedic insoles come standard with an antimicrobial material construction, cushioning, arch support, and a heel crash pad. You will also receive an adjustable arch support booster if you need additional support for high arches or overpronation.

Daniel also notes that the Francis Walking Shoe’s “wider base and non-slip sole also help promote stability and balance, while the soft, breathable upper provides all-day comfort.”

Speaking of the breathable upper, the exact material is not disclosed but the upper construction features a stretchy knit weave allowing for a custom fit for anyone with wide feet, bunions, or hammer toes. We also like the fact there is an easy-to-use pull closure to secure the laces in place without tying them up.

Other Walking Shoes For Seniors We Researched

Vionic Women’s Walker Classic: These women-specific shoes are a viable option for seniors looking for a podiatrist-designed footbed, however the suede upper does not allow for as much breathability as some of the other options on this list.

L.L. Bean Comfort Mocs: These slip-on shoes are a New England classic for folks of all ages, but didn’t make the list because we thought some of the other APMA options on this list offered better walking options for seniors.

Dr. Comfort Performance: Although there are hundreds of 5-star reviews on this pair of cross-trainers boasting about the comfy fit and breathable mesh upper, there were several reviews of heel counter wearing down.

Propet Wash and Wear Slip On: We noticed these washable slip-on shoes come up frequently in our research, however for the purposes of this roundup review, we wanted to include more traditional walking shoes for older adults.

How We Picked the Best Walking Shoes for Seniors

When our product testers begin to form a “best” list, we start by researching the most popular and frequently bought shoes by walkers and runners alike. We often purchase shoes to get our own hands-on (errr… feet-on) experience with them. Although we haven’t personally tested every shoe on this list, here are some of the considerations we made when putting together this collection curated for older adults:

  • Overall fit: To make it on this list, each pair of shoes needed to be roomy enough to spread your toes and secure enough to not add extra safety issues. Bonus points if the shoes allowed for custom orthotic inserts.
  • Comfort: Whether we tested the shoes ourselves or researched reviews on them, we wanted all the shoes on this list to provide comfort to walking seniors.
  • Sizes: We made sure that there are a variety of sizes available when ordering your new pair of walking shoes.
  • Cushion: Extra cushioning is more important for seniors than competitive runners, so we kept this in mind when choosing walking shoes.
  • Outsole: For seniors especially, each shoe on this list needed to provide traction—bonus points if they are non-slip.
  • Value: We tried to be selective on the price and the durability so you can go walk without fear the shoes will fall apart and without spending an arm and a leg.
  • Colors: Although not the most important, we wanted to make sure all the shoes on this list have at least two colorways to choose from (and some have more!).

Benefits of Walking Shoes For Seniors

We asked Daniel Pledger about the overall benefits of walking shoes for seniors, and he first mentioned the fact that “as we age, our feet tend to become more sensitive, and the wrong shoes can lead to discomfort, pain, and even injury,” he says.

The good news is that there are plenty of options made with seniors in mind, with extra discretion in the cushioning, stability, and overall comfort.

We all know the feeling of foot pain when you’ve bought yourself a pair of not-so-comfortable walking shoes. Perhaps there is a firm heel or not enough cushion underfoot. One benefit of walking shoes made for older adults is how much cushioning you’ll get from not just the insole materials (like memory foam) but the cushioning built into the midsole to provide shock-absorbing benefits during daily movement.

Stability and Support

Whether you over pronate or have high arches, it’s imperative to find a pair of walking shoes that stabilizes your foot. Shoes for seniors typically offer plenty of arch support because it’s not uncommon to lose foot strength as you age.

Shoes designed for seniors also tend to keep in mind a snug fit around the heel clip in addition to a roomy but secure fit around the toe box. This makes for a secure fit so that the shoe doesn’t slip off. It also helps keep your feet and ankle stacked properly for overall joint support.

It’s worth mentioning that the type of closure might also affect how supported you feel while wearing a pair of shoes.

What to Look for in Walking Shoes For Seniors

According to Daniel: “When shopping for walking shoes, senior citizens should prioritize comfort, support, and stability.” Here’s a quick overview of what to keep in mind when choosing your next pair of walking shoes for seniors:

Overall Fit

When it comes to shoes, what works for you might not work for someone else. We all have unique needs for our feet. “It’s essential to ensure that the shoes fit well, with enough room to wiggle your toes and no rubbing or pinching,” says Daniel.

This might mean looking for a roomy or wide toe box if you have wide feet. Or you might need extra arch support if you have collapsed and overpronated arches.

Cushioning

It’s likely you (or the senior in your life) will need extra cushioning to support sensitive feet, prevent blisters, and protect against other foot problems. Cushioning also serves as a way to reduce the impact walking has on your joints, which tend to be more sensitive with age.

Traction

“Seniors should look for shoes that offer ample cushioning, good arch support, and a sturdy, non-slip sole,” says Daniel. We agree when it comes to a non-slip outsole for older folks. If balance problems are something you struggle with, it’s worth searching for walking shoes with a non-slip outsole to provide extra grip on any surface including asphalt, tile, and wood floors.

Closure

For seniors, we think it’s important that the shoes are not only comfortable, but easy to get in and lace up. That said, traditional laces might not work for everyone. Some shoes offer Velcro straps or a simple pull cord to secure your foot in place.
