If you’ve ever done any level of sparring, whether for Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), or some form of mixed martial arts (MMA), you’ve probably seen or heard of sauna suits. The best sauna suits can help take your boxing workouts to the next level with calorie burning and increased energy use. These can be a boon to your training routine, but not without some level of risk.

Here, I’ve gathered our expert-tested top picks for the best sauna suits, geared for a variety of budgets and needs. We’ll also go over the benefits (and potential risks) of these sweat suits and some of the things to look for when making your sauna suit purchase.

Our team of certified personal trainers, coaches, and athletes tested quite a few sauna suits ourselves, noting and rating factors such as:

  • Materials: Are the materials flexible and durable enough to move around in?
  • Ventilation: What methods were used to regulate your body heat?
  • Fit: How does sizing work? Does the sauna suit fit loose to allow for movement?
  • Care instructions: How easy or tough is the maintenance of the sauna suit?
  • Overall value: Does the sauna suit’s cost make sense for the level of quality and features it has?

Without further ado, let’s knock out the best sauna suits with the ol’ one-two combo.

The 5 Best Sauna Suits

Best Overall Sauna Suit: Kutting Weight Hoodie V4

Good for: People looking for a comfortable sauna hoodie for their workouts

Best Overall

Kutting Weight Hoodie V4

product image
GGR Score: 4.43

Product Highlights

  • Sauna hoodie
  • Designed to increase sweating and help lose weight
  • Claims to increase metabolism, flexibility, calories burned, mental and physical toughness, immune system detox, and weight loss
  • Pants are sold separately

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Very positive customer reviews
  • Broad size range
  • Free shipping in the United States
  • 100% satisfaction guarantee
  • Triple-reinforced stitching
  • Machine wash and dry

Cons

  • Only a hoodie; pants sold separately
  • More expensive than competitors’ full sweatsuits

Bottom Line

The Kutting Weight Hoodie V4 is a high-quality sauna hoodie. It’s more expensive than competitors, but most customer reviews are extremely positive. Customers find it comfortable, stylish, and effective at increasing sweat and helping to cut weight.

Neoprene is one of the best materials for sauna suits—if it isn’t the best. It’s more breathable than other options, still traps heat, and is flexible enough for movement. That’s why we chose the Kutting Weight Hoodie V4 as our top pick for the best overall sauna suit.

As a weightlifter, I’ve had a lot of experience with neoprene, as it’s a common material for the best knee sleeves and has a similar goal—allowing movement while keeping my knees warm. The 1.5-millimeter thick neoprene of the hoodie was extremely comfortable in my testing, and I never felt constricted in my movement. More importantly, the material is tear-resistant and extremely durable, earning it a 5 out of 5 in both durability and the materials used.

Man biking on an exercise bike while wearing the Kutting Weight Hoodie V4

The fit was nice as well, although I suggest everyone check the sizing charts before ordering. I went with 6XL, which is a much larger size than my usual clothing and apparel. After using it through a few workouts, I don’t think a smaller size would’ve worked, either. The chest was just big enough for me, although the sleeves were a little long (this may have been by design, though). I rate the fit a solid 4.5 out of 5.

Although the hoodie has little to no adjustability—some colorways come with a drawstring for the hood—the neoprene still allows for stretch and movement, so it still earns a 4 out of 5 for adjustability.

The biggest downside is the cost of the hoodie. It’s $85, which is less expensive than some full-body suits. However, this is only half of a sauna suit. For the matching joggers, you’ll have to dish out another $70, making this one of the priciest sauna suits we looked at. That said, the neoprene material will last, making this a good value. I rate the value a 4 out of 5, as it’ll be a great choice for people who can handle the price.

Most Durable Sauna Suit: RAD Heavy Duty Sauna Suit

Good for: Users wanting a durable and inexpensive sauna suit

Most Durable

RAD Heavy Duty Sweat Suit Sauna

product image
GGR Score: 3.75

Product Highlights

  • Sauna suit with unisex design
  • Designed to increase sweat production during exercise by trapping heat
  • Includes pants and top
  • 6 colorways available

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Size ranges up to 6XL
  • Features 2 side pockets in both top and pant
  • Adjustable fastening cuffs
  • Night vision reflective logo
  • More affordable than competitors

Cons

  • Customer reviews claim sizes run small
  • Customers complain that seams tear and inside material flakes off
  • Not machine washable

Bottom Line

RAD Sauna Suit features a unisex design to help increase your sweat during exercise. It features pockets and adjustable cuffs. The reviews for this product were mixed. A lot of customers thought it was a good affordable suit; however, they also noted the sizing chart was inaccurate, with some customers suggesting sizing up at least two sizes. There were also multiple reviews noting the suit wasn’t durable, complaining of seams tearing and the material inside flaking off.

If you’re looking for a sauna suit that’ll last—and comes with a low price—then I recommend the RAD Heavy Duty Sauna Suit. Although neoprene sauna suits can provide more give and flex than a nylon suit, RAD’s sauna suits are oversized and spacious for plenty of room to move around while biking, boxing, or performing other workouts.

RELATED: Benefits of Boxing

I used the RAD sauna suit for a couple cardio exercises (as best as I could being a strength-biased weightlifter) and had no fear of it ripping or tearing. According to the company, the nylon and PVC-coated fabric is an anti-rip material, and it felt that way, even though it didn’t have much give or stretch. I rate the durability a 4.5 out of 5.

The material gets a 3 out of 5 though, mostly because of concerns of PVC being a carcinogenic material1, especially when burned or disposed of. If it was purely nylon, I’d rate it higher.

Man wearing the RAD Sauna Suit

I had some issues with the fit, but not necessarily in the ways you’d think. The suit fit mostly fine. I typically wear a 3XL, but looking at the size chart, I had to go with 6XL, their largest size.

Going by the chart, I thought that the bottoms might be a struggle to wear, but it was the opposite, actually. The pants were fine, but the top was a bit constricting. Once I got it on, it was fine, but I could barely fit my head through the opening. And since it wasn’t elastic, there wasn’t any give. Because of that, I rate the fit a 3 out of 5. It fit, but taking it on and off was a hassle for sure.

That said, the sauna suit gets a 5 out of 5 for value, as it’s one of the least expensive suits on the market and has held up pretty well. Customer reviews also tend to agree that the construction holds up.

Best Sauna Suit With Hood: Hotsuit Temp-Control Sauna Suit

Good for: Fitness enthusiasts who want to help regulate their body heat with a hood

Best with Hood

HOTSUIT Sauna Suit

product image
GGR Score: 3.89

Product Highlights

  • Temperature-controlled sauna suit
  • Features anti-stick after sweating
  • Includes pants and top
  • Available in black, light gray, and dark gray

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Temp-control logo changes color
  • Available in 3 colors
  • Side-zip design for ease in getting on and off

Cons

  • More expensive than competitors
  • Limited customer reviews
  • Some colors are sold out in certain sizes

Bottom Line

The HOTSUIT Temp-Controlled Sauna Suit is a high-end suit designed to help accelerate sweating and cut water weight prior to competition. The Temp-Control logo changes color from black to a lighter color when the temperature is high to remind you to take a break. There are very limited customer reviews but they found the sweatsuit high-quality, comfortable, and effective.

The Hotsuit Temp-Control Sauna Suit has several features that can help control and regulate your body heat: a zipper on the jacket, and a hood. They’re simple, which earns them only a 3.5 out of 5 on ventilation, but they’re effective. If at any point you begin to overheat, you can simply pull back the hood or unzip your jacket to cool down.

RELATED: Sauna Suit Benefits and Drawbacks

“The black logo on the suit also turns lighter if you’re overheating,” adds Nicole Davis, certified personal trainer and GGR head of content. This is a neat feature to have for elite athletes, especially since overheating and dehydration are the largest risks to using this method of heat therapy.

Woman wearing the Hotsuit Sauna Suit with the hood up

Hotsuit is a little vague on the materials used, although we were able to determine that the jacket is polyester. The interior material is referred to as their Silver-Heat REG V2.0 fabric, which claims to make the sauna suit more lightweight and breathable. It earns a 3 out of 5 for the materials, but a 4 out of 5 for the durability. Nicole mentions that the material isn’t very flexible, though, so make sure you get the right size or you risk tearing the suit while moving around.

The women’s sauna suit comes in Black or Floral White. “I went with Floral White and I regret it,” says Nicole. “It shows marks and dirt too easily, and I wish I’d gone with the Black colorway instead.” She also wasn’t a fan of the huge logo on the back of the jacket.

At $129 for the suit, it earns only a 3 out of 5 for value, as it’s one of the pricier suits we tested. Still, for simple temperature control, this is a great sauna suit.

Another thing to note is that when Nicole tested the Temp-Control Sauna Suit, the suit had full-length pants; now, it appears that there’s only a shorts version available for women. That may mean an updated version is rolling out soon.

Best Adjustable Sauna Suit: Boxraw Hagler Sauna Suit 2.0

Good for: People looking for a sauna suit that can be adjusted to fit just right

Best Adjustable

BoxRaw Hagler Sauna Suit 2.0

product image
GGR Score: 3.92

Product Highlights

  • Sauna suit designed by elite boxers for weight cutting
  • Version 2.0 features lighter and more durable fabric
  • Claims to aid weight loss, reduce injury risk, increase oxygen intake, and muscle hypertrophy
  • Rubberized inside lining and elasticized neck, ankle, and waist ribs
  • Zippered pockets and oversized fit
  • Includes pants and top

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Velcro wrist closures with elastic ankles, neck, and waist
  • Zippered pockets on pants and top
  • Machine washable, although customers recommend hand washing

Cons

  • More limited size range than competitors
  • Customer reviews recommend sizing up
  • Multiple customers noted getting product late or incorrect product

Bottom Line

The BoxRaw Hagler Sauna Suit 2.0 is the new and improved sweatsuit with lighter and more durable fabric. This suit was designed by boxers for boxers to help improve training and weight loss. Customer reviews are mixed; while most customers found the sweatsuit great, there are some complaints that sizes run small. Some customers also waited extended periods to receive products, or they got the incorrect products.

Since you want a sauna suit to fit loose enough so you can move around but also feel tight enough to be comfortable, proper sizing for can be tough. That’s why the Hagler Sauna Suit 2.0 from Boxraw is our pick for most adjustable sauna suit. Not only does it cover a broad array of sizes, but the sauna suit also has plenty of adjustable areas. There’s a drawstring in the elastic waistband, along with elastic ankles and Velcro cuffs to adjust the exact fit to your needs.

GGR staff writer Matt Dustin, CES, PN1-NC, has tried out the Hagler Sauna Suit and rates the adjustability a 4 out of 5. He gives the same rating to the sauna suit’s fit, saying, “I typically wear large in shorts and large or extra-large for shirts, so I went with an extra-large suit.”

“It’s a little loose, but the oversized design is intentional,” he adds. The oversized design allows for better freedom of movement and range of motion without you feeling trapped in the suit.

RELATED: Low-Impact Cardio Exercises

The sauna suit is made from polyester, and according to the website, it’s been given a lighter and more durable design. Matt agrees with the durability, rating it a 4 out of 5. He explains, “I haven’t used many sauna suits before, but this is much more durable than I was anticipating. Some of the elastic could stretch and wear out over time, but the material feels like it’s built to last for quite a while.”

Not much is done in terms of ventilation—just that the material is a bit more lightweight, earning it a 3 out of 5. With limited ventilation, we’d probably recommend this to someone who already has some experience with sauna suits. Still, with its durability and fit, this sauna suit will be a great option for someone wanting to move around freely while using the suit.

Best Budget Sauna Suit: MRX Heavy Duty Sweat Suit

Good for: Athletes on a budget who need a suit for their sparring workouts

Best Budget

MRX Heavy Duty Sweat Suit

product image

Product Highlights

* EVA nylon and neoprene sauna suit * Sizes range from M to 3XL * Comes in black with different-colored stripes * Machine washable

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Quality materials
  • Available in 4 colorways

Cons

  • Limited range of sizes
  • Some customers experienced some tearing and fraying

Bottom Line

The MRX Heavy Duty Sweat Suit is an inexpensive sauna suit made with quality materials like nylon and neoprene. While it comes in a few different colorways, the design is largely the same of black with different-colored stripes along the side. The sizing ranges from medium to 3XL, which only accounts for waist sizes between 32 and 44 inches, so it may not be ideal for smaller and larger athletes.

Sauna suits can be an efficient way to increase your workout’s efficiency, but they can get pricey, with quite a few costing $100 or more. Our pick for those on a budget is the MRX Heavy Duty Sweat Suit, which comes in at less than $39 on Amazon. That’s quite a steal.

RELATED: Best HIIT Workouts for Men

While we haven’t tested out the MRX Sauna Suit ourselves, we like that the company made the sauna suit with high-quality materials instead of opting out for cheaper materials. The MRX suit is EVA nylon and neoprene, allowing for a waterproof and durable material. The sauna suit is also double-stitched for extra durability—although some customer reviews note some loose stitching or premature wear and tear.

The sauna suit’s design is simple—it’s just a black suit with different color stripes going down the side of the top and bottoms. The MRX logo is on the chest and pant leg, but not in a pronounced way, giving the suit a clean look. The materials allow for a simple machine washing, and while the company doesn’t specify if it’s dryer-safe, I’d recommend letting it hang dry instead.

One issue for this sauna suit is that—compared to other brands—the sizing is a bit limited. The suit ranges from medium to 3XL, but that only covers waist sizes from 32 inches to 44 inches. Smaller and larger athletes may have to avoid this sauna suit; however, if you do fit the size range, this is a high-value suit for a low price.

Other Sauna Suits We Researched

Not every sauna suit we came across could make our final list. For those wanting to know all their options, here’s another sauna suit we tried and the reason it didn’t quite break into our top picks.

  • FightHaus Contender Sauna Suit: We didn’t test this full sauna suit, but it’s highly rated amongst customers. However, inventory seems to be dwindling. As of this writing, only a few suits in size Small are left.

How We Picked and Tested Sauna Suits

After researching sauna suits from top brands and companies, we picked a variety of different sweat suits and hoodies to test out in forming our final list of the best sauna suits. We gave ratings between 1 and 5 for several categories according to our testing methodology. Let’s break down the different aspects of sauna sweat suits, and what the fitness experts and testers on our team were looking for while trying out these top options.

  • Materials: We took a look at the materials used in the sauna suit, as the right material should be able to trap heat while being breathable, flexible, and durable. Top marks were given to flexible neoprene and nylon fabric. Another common fabric, PVC, is often avoided due to its long-held worry of being a possible carcinogen1 as well as harming the environment2.
  • Construction and durability: In addition to the materials, we looked at the stitching and build of each sauna suit, noting any potential of seams coming loose or fraying.
  • Ventilation: To prevent overheating, sauna suits can have ways to ventilate or regulate your core body temperature. Solutions can be as simple as having a more breathable fabric or a zipper to open up, but other suits can have lighter mesh areas to facilitate airflow.
  • Fit: Sauna Suits should fit well, but will commonly be a little on the looser side to prevent any constriction (or tears) while in use. So this was a rating on how the sauna suit fit on our testers—if there was room for movement and if the size chart was helpful in determining the proper size.
  • Adjustability: This was a rating on customization—basically, how easily can you adjust it to your needs or frame? We took a look at the available sizing options; if unisex, women’s, or men’s sauna suit sizing was available; as well as adjustment mechanisms like elastic waistbands with drawstrings, Velcro and elastic cuffs, or zippered tops, for example.
  • Care: How easy is caring for your sauna suit? Depending on the material, you may have to hand wash and dry your suit, or the material may be safe for machine washing and drying.
  • Value: Sauna suits can range from under $40 to $150 or more. Higher-priced sauna suits can be worth the cost, but should excel in the quality of the construction, durability, or functionality.
  • Customer experience: We took a look at how easy or difficult purchasing the sauna suit was, return policies, financing options, and the ease of contacting customer service to make this score. Top scores had responsive customer service and at least 30-day returns.

Potential Risks of Sauna Suits

Before we get into how a sauna suit may benefit you, I’d be remiss to not discuss the safety concerns surrounding sauna suits. The National Collegiate Athletics Association3 (NCAA), for example, has banned the use of sauna suits for cutting weight after the deaths of three collegiate-level wrestlers4. Their deaths were linked to dehydration and overheating—the two largest risks of using sauna suits.

It’s very important to note that sauna suits aren’t for everyone. Most research and studies done on sauna suits observed healthy and active individuals who often participated in endurance sports and training. The team at Garage Gym Reviews highly recommends consulting a doctor before incorporating a sauna suit into your training. Because of the potential risks, we’d also say these aren’t for beginners, older adults, or children.

Benefits of Sauna Suits

Now that we’ve gone over the potential risks, let’s talk about the ways that a sauna suit can help benefit your workouts and training.

Can Supplement Body Fat Reduction

Don’t get me wrong; a sauna suit isn’t going to be a miracle weight loss machine. Most of the weight loss claims by brands amount to water weight lost after a session of sweating (which is why it’s a common tool for cutting weight for sports). Still, an October 2020 study5 found that the energy expenditure of participants increased while in a sauna suit, which led to an increase in calories burned.

The difference in calories wasn’t much—only 23 per workout. While that isn’t going to make a huge difference in weight loss or burning fat, the same study also notes that fat oxidation, or how your body breaks up fat stores, increased and continued for an hour after sauna suit usage.

Can Improve VO2 Max

There’s some research that shows sauna suits can potentially aid in improving your VO2 max. But what is a VO2 max? It’s a measurement of how efficiently your body consumes oxygen during exercise and workouts. More oxygen consumption during workouts leads to better performance; less oxygen consumption does the opposite.

A small 2017 study6 found that endurance-trained athletes were able to increase their VO2 max over a 14-day period, along with time trial performance and ventilatory threshold. The case study was small with only 14 participants, but the study still shows the potential to help athletes and fitness enthusiasts improve their performance.

Can Help Acclimate to Heat

Sauna suits have another benefit—that of acclimating to hotter temperatures and environments faster. A study in the Journal of Research in Exercise Physiology7 suggests that consistent use of a sauna suit during low- to moderate-intensity workouts can help people better acclimate to the heat with an earlier onset of body sweat, a lowered heart rate, and a decreased body temperature.

What to Look for in Sauna Suits

If you’re still looking at which sauna suit would be best for your needs and budget, here are a few of the major factors to consider.

Materials and Construction

The construction of a sauna suit is important for tons of reasons. Most notably, the material needs to be able to trap body heat, but also be durable and strong enough to allow for a user to freely move throughout their workout.

Most sweat suits will be constructed from an anti-rip or tear-resistant material. The most common materials used are neoprene and nylon, with polyester and PVC fabric also being used. PVC tends to be avoided now, however, as its disposal and burning has been shown to be harmful to the environment2.

Materials can also impact the care required for your sauna suit. Neoprene sauna suits are typically fine to run through a washer and dryer machine, while nylon and polyester suits will have to be air-dried. Still, other suits can only be hand washed. Be mindful of the material and how that’ll affect the care instructions.

Woman wearing the Hotsuit Sauna Suit

Ventilation

Because of the risk of overheating, many sauna suits feature ways to ventilate and regulate heat. This can be as simple as having a quick zipper to pull down or up to cool off, or it can be more complex, such as having breathable mesh areas to help with airflow. Neoprene in particular is considered a more breathable material than nylon—although it still is capable of trapping heat.

Sizing

Most sauna suits have a variety of sizes available, but sizing may not be aligned with traditional sizing. I learned this myself with the two sauna suits I tested out. Being a competitive superheavyweight weightlifter, I’m a large guy and typically wear 3XL shirts and shorts.

RELATED: An Olympian’s Guide to Equipment for Olympic Weightlifting

However, using the sizing charts available, I realized for the suits I tested, I needed the 6XL suits. They fit fine, but I had to pay attention to the brand’s sizing chart to make sure I had the right size. Make sure to check the sizing charts available, and also read customer reviews to see how other users felt about sizing.

Cost

How much do you have in your budget for a sauna suit? The cost will be a factor, and it will also impact the type of suit you’re looking for. Fully neoprene suits are typically the best, but will also be pricier. Cheaper materials may not last as long, however. Make sure to factor in your budget, and also take note of financing options available.

Best Sauna Suit: FAQs

Do sauna suits really work?

Sauna suits do work…depending on your use for them. Many purported benefits, such as weight loss or detoxification, are over-exaggerated and under-researched. Sauna suits can help you sweat, which may be an effective way for an athlete to cut weight before a competition (with some risk of hyperthermia or dehydration), but the weight loss is water weight and therefore only temporary.

Still, small studies6 hint at the possibility for sauna suits to improve VO2 max by raising your body heat, and therefore improving athletic performance.

RELATED: How To Detox Your Body Safely

Is a sauna suit good for weight loss?

Sauna suits may help to burn body fat and increase energy expenditure5, but the amount of extra calories burned is negligible—23 according to one study. The best method for weight or fat loss is through regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet of whole foods; a sauna suit may be able to aid in weight loss, but won’t be the sole way to lose weight or lose body fat.

RELATED: How To Lose Body Fat

Is it OK to wear a sauna suit every day?

It’s not recommended to wear a sauna suit every day. Instead, two or three sessions each week between 5 and 20 minutes (depending on your experience) is more than adequate. More sessions than that each week can increase your risk of dehydration or hyperthermia, two of the biggest risks of sauna suits.

Because of that, we recommend consulting a doctor before using a sauna suit. Generally, we don’t recommend using a sauna suit at all for beginners, children, older adults, or anyone with chronic illness.

Should I wear clothes under a sauna suit?

Wearing clothes underneath your sauna suit may help wick away sweat more efficiently, but it can also trap heat more, increasing your body heat and potentially increasing your risk of hyperthermia. Regardless, if you’re using a sauna suit, make sure to stay hydrated and also be mindful of the time spent in the sweat suit.
