Group of people sitting in the Sun Home Sauna Luminar Infrared sauna for the best infrared sauna cover

Looking for the best infrared sauna for home use? You’re in luck; our team of expert product testers—certified personal trainers, lifting coaches, and lifelong athletes—has personally used and tested over 30 of the best home saunas. Our picks include a variety of sizes and types of infrared saunas, from indoor and outdoor saunas to sauna blankets and tents.

RELATED: The History of Saunas

In compiling our list, we tested each sauna according to our detailed sauna testing methodology and scored each product based on factors such as:

  • Value: To get a 3 out of 5 or higher, the sauna must be priced fairly in relation to the features it offers, its seating capacity, and its construction.
  • Delivery: Infrared saunas with the highest scores offer threshold delivery, and the setup process is straightforward (or at least as much as it can be for a large unit like a sauna).
  • Construction and durability: To get a 4 or higher in this category, the sauna must be made with durable wood like hemlock or cedar.
  • Heat performance: Infrared saunas that heat up within 10 to 15 minutes and maintain their temperature for an entire sauna session earned at least a 4 out of 5 here.
  • Extra features: If an infrared sauna has features such as LED lighting, Bluetooth connectivity, and mobile app control, we rated it a 4 out of 5 or higher.

We also talked to GGR panel experts like Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, to get the scoop on the safety and benefits of infrared saunas. In 2024, we helped nearly 500 people find their ideal home sauna, so read on to see which infrared sauna can help you recover better and help you achieve your fitness goals.

The Sun Home Equinox Sauna is a full-spectrum infrared sauna, providing near, mid, and far infrared rays during a sauna session. With a controlled temperature adjustment, the sauna also features medical-grade chromotherapy LED lights and Bluetooth or auxiliary enabled surround sound.

What our tester says:

“You can feel this sauna heat up in seconds—I really enjoy using it.”

At a Glance

  • Upper mid-range, full-spectrum infrared sauna
  • Average temperature range
  • Requires a dedicated 120V outlet and 20A circuit, which is standard in most homes
  • Above-average warranty

The Equinox from Sun Home Saunas is the best infrared sauna for home because it delivers on two principles: It uses quality shielding to keep potentially dangerous ELF/EMF levels (extremely low frequency electric and magnetic fields) low, and it uses full-spectrum infrared heating as opposed to just far-infrared heating like many infrared saunas.

While the risks of ELF/EMF exposure are low, some research does suggest it can be harmful at higher frequencies1, so we like that Sun Home Saunas takes measures to reduce exposure to these fields. Plus, full-spectrum infrared wavelengths penetrate the skin more deeply. For these reasons, the Equinox earned an overall score of 4.4 out of 5.

Features & Extras: 4/5

Durability & Construction: 4.5/5

Why We Like the Sun Home Equinox 2-Person Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna

While we haven’t used the Sun Home Equinox specifically, our GGR testers have tested other models from Sun Home Saunas. We’ve noticed their products are high-quality and well-made, receiving a 4.5 out of 5 in durability and construction. Sun Home Saunas also claims that their saunas are some of the only infrared saunas in the world to reach a maximum temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

The two-person sauna is built with kiln-dried eucalyptus wood and features a Bluetooth-connected surround sound system, as well as medical-grade chromotherapy LED lighting. It earns a 4 out of 5 on features.

The saunas from Sun Home Saunas heat up more quickly than a lot of other saunas I’ve tried (in about 10 minutes), and the features and extra touches they come with truly make them stand out.

Lindsay Scheele, CPT, Garage Gym Reviews Everything lead reviewer

Alternatives

The Sun Home Saunas Equinox is one of the more expensive infrared saunas on the market, priced around $7,499, but Sun Home does provide a nice limited lifetime warranty (three years on controls). It still gets a 3.5 out of 5 for value.

Based on our experience with other models from Sun Home Saunas, the delivery and setup process earns a 3.5 out of 5. I spoke to GGR Operations Manager Sam Presley (who has assembled dozens of saunas), and he said that the number of people the sauna can fit is how many people are required to assemble it. Other Sun Home Saunas models we’ve built have needed double that number of people to assist, so we’re pretty confident that you’ll need several friends to assemble this two-person sauna.

If you want a more affordable two-person sauna, the Heavenly Heat Far Infrared 2-Person Sauna is a great choice.

The Sunlighten Amplify II is a full-spectrum infrared sauna with a built-in sound system and color therapy features.

At a Glance

  • Low mid-range, full-spectrum indoor infrared sauna
  • Above-average temperature range
  • Requires a dedicated 120V outlet and 20A circuit, which is standard in many homes
  • Above-average warranty

For the best full-spectrum infrared sauna, our pick is the Sunlighten Amplify II Infrared Sauna. It has six heaters, two of which are full-spectrum high-intensity heaters that can help heat the body and raise your heart rate safely. It also includes chromotherapy lighting, a built-in sound system, and a removable bench so you can make room to do some yoga as you detox. Our tester rated the heat performance a perfect 5 out of 5.

“This sauna is a beauty,” Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC told me. “And the carbon heaters offer a more consistent heating system, which I enjoy.”

Features & Extras: 5/5

Durability & Construction: 4/5

Showing the interior of the Sunlighten Amplify II Sauna
You can choose eucalyptus or basswood. Either way, you’ll get a sauna with a sleek design and modern aesthetic.

Heat Performance: 5/5

A woman sitting inside the Sunlighten Amplify II sauna
Capable of going up to 170 degrees Fahrenheit, the Amplify II is one of the hottest infrared saunas we’ve tested.

Why We Like the Sunlighten Amplify II Infrared Sauna

As with most indoor infrared saunas, the Sunlighten Amplify II sauna requires only 120-volt outlets, which is the standard power voltage of houses. Outdoor and traditional saunas can often require 240 volts, which will require an added cost of electrical installations.

It’s available as a two-person sauna and boasts a sleek, modern design that will stand out in a good way inside your home. We love that you can choose between eucalyptus and basswood for the wood construction. Each wood has positives and negatives, but eucalyptus is a heavier, more durable wood, while basswood is hypoallergenic. We rated the construction and durability a 4 out of 5.

RELATED: How Long Should You Stay In a Sauna?

Lindsay was very impressed with the built-in sound system, as well. She had no problems connecting her phone via Bluetooth. “This was the easiest connection I’ve ever had from a sauna. It was very loud, and the sound quality was crystal-clear,” she told me.

You can find cheaper saunas on Amazon, but in terms of quality, they just don’t meet the mark the way the Sunlight Amplify II does. If you are looking for a quality infrared sauna, this would be on my list of ones to choose.

Alternatives

For the exact pricing of the Sunlighten Amplify II sauna, you’ll have to request a quote—a process we rate at 2 out of 5 when compared to other models in the category. For a two-person sauna, you can make a safe bet that it’ll cost a few thousand dollars, which might be out of some people’s budget. Still, with its many features and amenities, this can be a great addition to just about any home.

Sunlighten also ships the sauna in multiple packages and claims it will be delivered in 12 to 15 days after you place your order. However, some customers have stated that it took almost two months to receive all of the packages. This is still a high-quality sauna that we think is worth the wait, but we still rate the delivery and setup a 3 out of 5.

If you want to save money and aren’t ready to spend thousands of dollars, you can always get started with something that’s smaller and more affordable, like the HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket.

The Sun Home Luminar Outdoor Infrared Sauna has a sleek aesthetic to its design, while also being functional. One of the only infrared saunas that are able to be set up outdoors, this sauna has an exterior built from Grade-A carbonized wood to prevent warping, cracking, and shrinkage of the exterior. This sauna is a full-spectrum infrared sauna, providing near, mid, and far infrared heat in the sauna.

What our tester says:

“This is by far the most expensive and yet, from everything I can tell, has the most to offer as well,”

  • Below-average warranty

Outdoor saunas are an appealing option, as the sleek design of many saunas stands out in an outdoor setting. When it comes to infrared saunas, though, there aren’t many outdoor options, mostly due to the infrared heating elements being fragile and not being able to survive the elements.

RELATED: SweatTent Outdoor Sauna Review

This isn’t the case with the Sun Home Luminar Outdoor Sauna. Available in a two- or five-person sauna, the Luminar’s carbon heaters are made to last. The sauna uses carbonized red cedar wood, also known as charred wood, which enhances the stability, durability, and resistance to decay and insects. It’s one of the best woods for saunas in the outdoors, leading us to rate the construction a 4.5 out of 5.

Why We Like the Sun Home Luminar Outdoor 5-Person Sauna

The Sun Home Luminar works exceptionally well, earning a 5 out of 5 for heat performance. GGR Everything lead reviewer Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC, told me, “This heats up in less than 10 minutes, which is wild for its size; when you turn on the sauna, you can feel the heat within seconds.”

The spacious five-person sauna boasts 15 total infrared heaters—five far infrared heaters and 10 full-spectrum heaters (far-, mid-, and near-infrared)—and reaches a top temperature of 170 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Sun Home Luminar just oozes with decadence. Testing it was an exquisite experience, to say the least!

Lindsay Scheele, CPT, Garage Gym Reviews Everything lead reviewer

Alternatives

At nearly $14,500, the Sun Home Luminar is not cheap by any means. Its exterior dimensions measure 82 inches wide by 51.5 inches deep by 82.5 inches high, so it will also require quite a bit of room. Both the higher cost and the larger footprint are to be expected for a five-person sauna, but you’ll definitely want to consider your budget and measure your space before making your purchase.

The assembly can be time-consuming, and Lindsay rates it a 4 out of 5. It wasn’t the most difficult assembly process we’ve experienced with a sauna, but it will require a team of people.

“The panels come pre-assembled, which is nice, but each panel at this size weighs a lot, so you’ll need multiple people,” Lindsay told me. “We had two people holding a wall on one side, while two other people held a wall on the back of the sauna. Then a fifth person screwed those two walls together.”

If this sauna is too big for your needs, we recommend the Sun Home Equinox 2-Person Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna.

The Relaxe Caldera Infrared Sauna is a dual-function unit combining infrared heat and red light therapy in a space-saving design. With its low-EMF carbon heaters, sleek aesthetic, and plug-and-play setup, it’s a smart choice for anyone looking to elevate their home wellness routine with minimal hassle.

What our tester says:

“It has one of the most comfortable benches I’ve ever tested. It has a nice slant-back design where two people can easily fit comfortably.”

  • Offers both infrared and red light therapy

Red light therapy has become more prevalent in the recovery space in recent years, and if you’re searching for an infrared sauna that can help treat skin concerns and reduce inflammation3 via this unique technology, look no further than the Relaxe Caldera Infrared Sauna. This two-person model comes with a detachable red light therapy panel that emits wavelengths of red light between 660 and 880 nanometers (nm). GGR Everything lead reviewer Lindsay Scheele told me, “You want to sit right between about 600 and 1,000, so this really hits the mark.”

Packed with many user-friendly features, the Caldera earned a strong overall score of 4.4 out of 5.

Features & Extras: 4/5

Our tester enjoying a recovery session in the Relaxe Caldera Infrared Sauna
We love that the Caldera offers multiple types of light therapy, including a detachable red light panel.

Why We Like the Relaxe Caldera Full Spectrum Infrared Sauna With Red Light

The Relaxe Caldera Infrared Sauna delivers an impressive mix of build quality, wellness-enhancing features, and overall value that make it an excellent investment for fitness enthusiasts who want to take their recovery routine to the next level. Built from premium Canadian hemlock, the Caldera earned a near-perfect 4.5-out-of-5 rating for construction and durability from our team.

“When you sit down, you are going to sweat, but the wood itself does not feel hot,” Lindsay explains. “Plus, it’s very good at keeping bacteria away.”

What separates the Caldera from other contenders is that it’s a full-spectrum infrared sauna that combines red light and near-infrared wavelengths to help promote muscle recovery, improve circulation, and support skin health. We also appreciate that Relaxe goes above and beyond for its customers by providing a comprehensive three-year warranty and unmatched 365-day trial period.

Plus, the Caldera’s thoughtful design features—including a detachable red light therapy panel, chromotherapy lighting, and built-in Bluetooth speakers—help elevate each session beyond basic heat therapy. We rate the features and extras at a strong 4 out of 5.

Between the salt, the red light, the infrared, and the fact the chromotherapy lighting is uniquely done with these starlight-like features at the top, I thought it was just a very fun sauna to use.

Lindsay Scheele, CPT, Garage Gym Reviews Everything lead reviewer

Alternatives

Measuring 47 inches long, 43 inches wide, and 75 inches high, the Caldera has almost identical dimensions to the Heavenly Heat Far Infrared 2-Person Sauna—our choice for the best two-person infrared sauna. However, tipping the scales at 340 pounds, it’s not particularly portable. While we appreciate the Caldera’s compact footprint, we docked some points due to its lack of portability. Overall, we rate it at 3.5 out of 5 in this category.

Even if you find it on sale for less than its list price of $10,998, this sauna is far from budget-friendly. However, you’re not just getting a sauna; you’re also getting the benefits of red light therapy without having to purchase separate equipment. The best red light therapy devices aren’t always cheap, so it’s nice to get the detachable panel as part of the package.

In addition, be aware that the control panel isn’t the easiest to navigate. Lindsay warns that you have to hold down the button until it starts beeping before you adjust the lighting, temperature, or sound control on the built-in speakers. This is a minor callout, but one worth noting from a user experience perspective.

If you’re searching for a two-person infrared sauna with similar specs, the Heavenly Heat Far Infrared 2-Person Sauna is an excellent choice that delivers the same premium sauna construction without the red light therapy panel.

The Heavenly Heat Far Infrared 2-Person Sauna features chromotherapy lighting and a low electromagnetic field. It’s made naturally with no glues, plywood, or stains.

What our tester says:

“If you prioritize eco-consciousness and work to actively reduce your exposure to electromagnetic fields, this may be the right option for you. The brand takes pride in eliminating Bluetooth accessories, cable shielding, and not treating wood with stains or glue.”

At a Glance

  • Requires a 15A circuit, which is standard in many homes
  • Above-average warranty

If you’re looking for a two-person sauna made with all-natural ingredients for a premium sauna experience, the Heavenly Heat Far Infrared 2-Person Sauna is an excellent choice. GGR product testers Lindsay Scheele and Nicole Davis both agreed that it’s a bit snug for two adults, but if you use the sauna with family members or close friends, the small interior likely won’t be a dealbreaker.

RELATED: Proper Sauna Etiquette

We also like that the footprint is smaller than other two-person saunas we’ve tested, so we rated it a 4 out of 5 in that category.

Footprint: 4/5

A close look at the bench in a Heavenly Heat 2-Person Sauna
Two adults in the Heavenly Heat sauna may feel a bit cramped, but we still scored the footprint a 4 because of its compact design.

Heat Performance: 4/5

A woman is shown using a Heavenly Heat 2-Person Sauna
This sauna takes about 30 minutes to reach its max temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit, but the temperature will remain steady throughout your entire sauna session.

Features & Extras: 2/5

A hand interacts with the control panel on a Heavenly Heat 2-Person Sauna
It doesn’t have a ton of high-tech features, but it’s still a good option for those who prefer eco-friendly products and want to reduce exposure to EMF frequencies.

Why We Like the Heavenly Heat Far Infrared 2-Person Sauna

Heavenly Heat saunas are made with 100% non-resinous Canadian Hemlock wood and don’t use any adhesives, paint, stains, or plywood. This helps eliminate the risk of chemicals being released into the air from the high temperatures, allowing users to enjoy a clean sauna experience. Hemlock is also naturally humidity-resistant, so we rate the durability and construction a 4 out of 5.

Lindsay also notes that the sauna retains its temperature well, rating its heat performance a 4 out of 5. “I got in around 130 degrees and I started to sweat, which has not happened while testing other saunas during the pre-heating phase,” she told me. “I think the placement of the carbon heaters on the walls of the sauna contributes to raising your core temperature quickly.”

The tempered glass makes it feel more spacious and gives you a better view of your surroundings. You won’t feel boxed in.

Lindsay Scheele, CPT, Garage Gym Reviews Everything lead reviewer

Alternatives

Because there’s no sealant to protect the exterior from the elements, the Heavenly Heat Far Infrared 2-Person Sauna is best used indoors. This could limit where you put the sauna if you don’t have a ton of extra space inside your home.

At around $7,300, this sauna is on par with the average infrared sauna price, but it’s important to note that it doesn’t offer a lot of extra features.

GGR editorial team member Nicole Davis rated the value a 3 out of 5. She told me, “The brand prides itself on providing eco-friendly products by eliminating Bluetooth accessories, cable shielding, and not treating wood with stains or glue. I don’t know if this is the best value for the price, but if you prioritize eco-consciousness, this may be the right option for you.”

If you want a similar two-person sauna that includes red light therapy, be sure to check out the Relaxe Caldera Infrared Sauna.

The Sunlighten Solo Portable Infrared Sauna is designed for movability and compact storage. It has multiple zone-based digital heaters and built-in chromotherapy features.

If you need a sauna that you can travel with or easily put away in between sessions, we think you’ll like the Sunlighten Solo System Portable Far Infrared Sauna. This sauna is pretty easy to set up and is super light. It’s basically just a matter of unfolding the pieces and laying them out in your chosen location, earning it a 4 out of 5 for footprint.

Heat Performance: 4/5

While there are some small gaps due to the sauna’s design, the covering that comes with it helps retain most of the heat.

Footprint: 4/5

Features & Extras: 4/5

Sunlighten Solo Sauna remote control for pad
You can easily adjust the sauna’s settings with the remote control—just be aware that you’ll have quite a few wires to deal with.

Why We Like the Sunlighten Solo Portable Infrared Sauna

The product consists of a portable nesting dome design that goes over your body while you lie on the SoloPad and a pillow. The dome has five SoloCarbon heaters inside, and the SoloPad has four SoloCarbon heaters. Having multiple heaters helps increase your chances of experiencing all wavelengths at one time since they all require different temperatures. For that reason, we rate the heat performance a 4 out of 5.

Since you may spend up to 20 minutes in this sauna, comfort is pretty important. Luckily, the SoloPad portion of this portable infrared sauna is made of memory foam. Our expert product tester, Lindsay Scheele, found it pretty comfy and rated the construction and durability a 4 out of 5.

“The sauna takes about 30 minutes to heat up, but I really like that the exterior doesn’t feel super hot to the touch, nor does the floor get overheated,” she told me.

The floor pad is pretty comfortable, honestly. I enjoyed using this. This is a two-inch squishy pad that provides a good place to lie on the floor in our testing warehouse.

Lindsay Scheele, CPT, Garage Gym Reviews Everything lead reviewer

Alternatives

While this solo sauna is lightweight, it does have various pieces with multiple power cards, making it inconvenient to move. “Once out of the box, it is a little awkward to move around,” GGR operations manager Sam “AsSAMbly” Presley told me.

It is also quite a bit more expensive than other portable saunas, especially because there are multiple parts to it. You can buy them together as a bundle and save a bit of cash, but it will still cost you about $3,200 all in. We rated the value a 4 out of 5 because we did enjoy our experience with it, but we recognize that it won’t fit everyone’s budget.

Also, if you are a larger or taller-bodied person, or if you want a spacious sauna to do hot yoga in, you may find this solo sauna to be a tight squeeze.

If you’re looking for something even more portable and significantly cheaper, the HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket is a good option.

The sauna has a large number of positive reviews but many customers had difficulty reaching customer service when issues arose.

What our tester says:

“Unless you are really comfortable with the person next to you, I don’t think this is a good amount of space for two people”

Infrared heat can produce some levels of EMF, or electromagnetic fields, which could be harmful at higher frequencies1. To keep frequencies low, some infrared saunas use shields to minimize EMF output. Our pick for the best low-EMF infrared sauna is the Dynamic Saunas Andora 2-Person Infrared Sauna.

This sauna is made with six dynamic low-EMF infrared carbon heating panels that provide even far infrared heating to a maximum temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. This, along with a Canadian hemlock frame and tempered glass door, earns the Dynamic Andora a 4 out of 5 for construction and durability.

Features & Extras: 4/5

The Dynamic Andora is equipped with modern features like chromotherapy lighting, dynamic speakers with auxiliary connectivity, and an LED control panel.

Heat Performance: 5/5

A woman opens the door of a Dynamic Infrared Sauna
It only goes up to 135 degrees Fahrenheit, but it heats up fully in under 40 minutes and retains its heat well.

Why We Like the Dynamic Andora 2-Person Infrared Sauna

The sauna performed well in our testing. GGR Everything lead reviewer Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC, told me, “This took 39 minutes to heat up to the full 140 degrees, which is within the time frame the website gives. We even shot pictures in it for the first 10 minutes while it was heating up; the door was open and shut several times during the photo shoot, and it still managed to heat up pretty well.” She rates the heat performance a 5 out of 5.

A pleasant surprise is that the assembly of this sauna is fairly simple. Due to its size, you’ll need two people, but GGR operations manager Sam Presley says the assembly process is pretty straightforward.

“The wall and floor panels slide in together, so you’ll just need one person holding up walls while another slides the panels in place,” Sam told me. “Compared to many saunas we’ve built out, this one was fairly easy to put together, and the instructions were written well.” He gives the setup a 4 out of 5.

I love the look of this sauna. The wood is bright, and the overall design is simple but modern.

Alternatives

When I asked Lindsay about how comfortable the sauna is, she said, “I was never really able to find a way to sit in it comfortably. It can also be a tight fit for two adults, so unless you’re really close with the person sitting next to you, you might want to choose a larger sauna.” We still rate the footprint a 4 out of 5 because its compact design means it can more easily fit into small spaces.

While we gave the heat performance a high score, we also want to call out that the max temperature of 135 degrees Fahrenheit is lower than the other infrared saunas we’ve tested.

If you need a sauna that has a higher temperature and is still low-EMF, be sure to check out the Heavenly Heat Far Infrared 2-Person Sauna.

The HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket offers a portable and affordable alternative to installing a sauna in your home. The sauna blanket uses far infrared technology to provide heat stimulation to your entire body while you’re inside the sauna blanket.

What our tester says:

“If you love sauna sessions and need a more portable option I think this is great. I felt super relaxed and enjoyed using it.”

At a Glance

At-home saunas can take up quite a bit of space, so sauna blankets are a nice alternative when you need a smaller or more portable sauna. The HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket is one of our favorites because it heats up quickly and is easy to pack up and store. We rated it a 5 out of 5 for heat performance.

Durability & Construction: 3.5/5

You’ll need some space to roll it out as it’s 71 inches long, but it rolls up easily for travel or storage.

Why We Like the HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket

GGR Everything lead reviewer Lindsay Scheele tried out the HigherDOSE Sauna Blanket and rates its performance a 5 out of 5. She explains, “It’s super easy to use. It comes with a dial that lets you control the temperature, and it heats up in less than 10 minutes. Each session is 30 to 45 minutes long.”

The heating elements of the sauna blanket are surrounded by charcoal, clay, and magnetic layers, which are entirely encased in a non-toxic vegan leather coating. HigherDOSE claims the blanket can help boost collagen production9, promote deeper feelings of relaxation2, and boost circulation2.

“Sauna blankets use infrared heat to warm your body, causing you to sweat like in a regular sauna,” adds Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM. “The idea is to help with relaxation and detox by making you sweat it out. They’re good for anyone wanting to relax, recover after workouts, or sweat out toxins.”

This is a great option if you want to participate in sauna sessions at home but need a portable option. I always feel comfortable and relaxed when I use it.

Lindsay Scheele, CPT, Garage Gym Reviews Everything lead reviewer

Alternatives

Because the blanket isn’t washable, sweat could cause the vegan leather to break down prematurely. Lindsay rates the durability and construction a 3.5 out of 5. However, you can purchase inserts for the blanket, which will help catch sweat within the blanket while in use.

“I would highly recommend buying extra inserts,” Lindsay says. “It seems like a better option to help keep things clean. I also used a towel as recommended, and the clean-up was much easier.”

At around $699, the sauna blanket is far less expensive than a typical infrared sauna, but it’s a pricier sauna blanket. Plus, it only has a one-year warranty compared to the three years we typically see on sauna blankets. We score the overall value a 3 out of 5, accordingly.

For those who like the idea of a portable sauna but want to spend a little more for a nicer alternative, we recommend the Sunlighten Solo Portable Infrared Sauna.

The Smartmak Far Infrared Sauna is an inexpensive and portable solution for an infrared sauna. Being compact, this sauna can be folded when not in use. Available in two sizes, this portable seated sauna tent may still be a tight fit for larger athletes.

This sauna tent is a compact, portable one-person sauna that’s available on Amazon for under $200, which is an extremely low home sauna cost. It may not have the features of a full-size sauna, but with its low price point, it still earns a 4 out of 5 on value.

This sauna is made with a cotton exterior and a waterproof interior. Plus, it’s machine-washable.

Why We Like the Smartmak Far Infrared Sauna

Unlike many of the saunas we’ve discussed so far, the Smartmak sauna is constructed with a cotton fabric exterior, with waterproof fabric on the inside of the sauna tent. Within the compact space are three carbon fiber heating elements and a heating foot pad. You then remain seated in the tent with an included foldable chair.

There is a remote that comes along with it, and you can easily adjust the temp before you get in or during your session. You can also place the remote in a little pocket on the outside of the sauna,” GGR Everything lead reviewer Lindsay Scheele told me.

Lindsay gives the sauna a 4 out of 5 on performance, as it took about 20 minutes to warm up to its max temperature. Once the sauna reached its peak temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit, it performed well.

This held my set temperature the entire time. Even when I had my arms out of the sauna, using the arm pockets, the temperature didn’t drop.

Lindsay Scheele, CPT, Garage Gym Reviews Everything lead reviewer

Alternatives

While this sauna is made to be very compact and portable, the sauna itself and the included folding chair may be a bit small for larger people. Lindsay told me, “The chair was comfortable for me—more comfortable than some wooden sauna seats. However, I am five feet and four inches tall and around 130 pounds. I could see someone bigger than me feeling uncomfortable in the chair. It’s like a cheap, small lawn chair.”

Another complaint Lindsay had was the sauna’s lack of aesthetic appeal. She says, “This feels so silly to sit in, with your head and arms popping out of the sauna tent. I’d laugh so hard if I walked into someone’s home gym and saw them relaxing in this thing next to their squat rack.”

If you want to spend a little bit more but still keep it under $1,000, the HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket is worth considering.

If you need a sauna that can fit into a small room and will offer a sanctuary where you can relax by yourself, the SaunaBox Solara is a worthy option.

This one-person infrared sauna earned a 4.2 out of 5 overall, thanks to its Bluetooth capabilities, relatively affordable price tag of just under $3,000 (which is a great price for a high-quality sauna like this one), and red light therapy. The inclusion of a red light therapy panel means the sauna can offer additional benefits, such as improved wound healing and a reduction in the appearance of scars3.

Heat Performance: 5/5

We love the addition of the red light therapy panel, which is perfectly placed and allows you to get hit with the light wherever you sit.

Footprint: 5/5

A man stepping inside the SaunaBox Solara
This sauna can only be used indoors, but with its compact footprint, you should be able to find a spot for it.

Why We Like the SaunaBox Solara

One of the Solara’s standout features is its fast heat-up time. “This sauna heats up really, really quickly,” Lindsay Scheele, lead reviewer for Garage Gym Reviews Everything and a certified personal trainer, told me. As such, we rate the heat performance a 5 out of 5.

Lindsay also found the sauna comfortable to sit in. The backrest has a slight curve to it, and the Canadian hemlock wood doesn’t get too hot, so you don’t have to worry about burning yourself when you lean against the wood.

When I asked Lindsay to describe the assembly process, she called it “ingenious.” The Solara comes mostly pre-assembled, with four panels that lock into place. You then just need to attach the red light therapy panel. Lindsay says the entire assembly should take two people about 30 minutes and rates the delivery and setup process a 4 out of 5.

If you’re looking for a one-person infrared sauna that has near-, mid-, and far-infrared heating, that also comes with red light therapy and is comfortable to use, this is a great option.

Lindsay Scheele, CPT, Garage Gym Reviews Everything lead reviewer

Alternatives

The SaunaBox Solara only comes with a one-year warranty, and we typically like to see a warranty of at least five years. That said, since this is an indoor-only sauna, it won’t be exposed to harsh weather. It should last for years if you care for it properly (i.e., wiping it down after each use and leaving the door open for about 30 minutes after your session to let the sauna air out).

One of the only other complaints Lindsay had about the Solara when I asked her about it was the quality of the speakers. “The speakers are okay, but they’re not as high-quality as JBL speakers or products from other well–known speaker brands,” she said.

Still, we rate the features and extras a 4 out of 5.

Other Infrared Saunas We Researched

We looked at a lot of saunas, both infrared and traditional, when testing out the best of this muscle recovery tool. Here are a few honorable mentions that didn’t make our top picks.

  • SunRay Evansport 2-Person Infrared Sauna: Packed with features like Bluetooth audio, an LED control panel, and recessed lighting, this sauna looks promising, but we haven’t had a chance to test it out yet.
  • Radiant Sauna 2-Person Hemlock Infrared Sauna: This sauna from Radiant Saunas boasts six carbon heaters, but customers complain that the sauna doesn’t get warm enough.
  • LifePro Portable Far Infrared Sauna Blanket: Although a decent budget-friendly option, this sauna blanket doesn’t cover your arms like other sauna blankets.

How We Picked and Tested the Best Infrared Saunas

In making our list of the best infrared saunas, we looked at aspects of each of the top brands and products on the market. In testing them, our team of experts looked at certain aspects, giving them scores on the following criteria:

  • Footprint: To get at least a 3 out of 5, an infrared sauna must be able to comfortably seat the number of people it claims it can. If it’s a portable sauna or a sauna blanket, it must fold easily and be lightweight enough to carry around.
  • Delivery and setup: The infrared saunas that earned a 3 out of 5 or higher offer threshold delivery (meaning they will leave it at your doorstep instead of your curb). The assembly process is straightforward, the instructions are clear, and two people can build the sauna within a couple of hours.
  • Durability and construction: For an infrared sauna to earn high scores here, it must be made with a durable, mildew-resistant wood like hemlock or cedar. It must also feel sturdy and not show any signs of warping or collapsing.
  • Heat performance: Infrared saunas don’t get as hot as steam saunas, but we timed how long it took them to reach their max temperature and analyzed how well they maintained their heat. The infrared saunas that earned at least a 4 out of 5 heated up within 15 minutes, and the temperature remained steady for an entire sauna session.
  • Features and extras: To get at least a 4 out of 5 here, an infrared sauna must offer Bluetooth connectivity for a sound system, temperature controls through a panel or remote, and chromotherapy lighting.
  • Value: Saunas are already pricey, so the cost of a sauna needs to make sense for its size and features. We also compared the price of each infrared sauna to its competitors—if it was significantly more expensive than similar models, we gave it a lower score.
  • Financing, warranty, and returns: The saunas that earned a 4 or 5 out of 5 here offer multi-year warranties, 0% financing, and 30-day returns.

We also looked at other customer reviews and analyzed each company’s customer service. Brands that earned the highest scores for customer service offered multiple contact methods, had friendly and knowledgeable customer service reps, and responded to our inquiries within 24 hours.

RELATED: Sauna Maintenance Tips

Benefits of Infrared Saunas

Before we get into the possible health benefits of an infrared sauna, let’s talk about the practical convenience of infrared home saunas. Traditional dry and steam saunas work by warming up the air through heat and humidity, often with the use of electric Harvia heaters or sauna rocks that you pour water over. This can lead to water damage or mold over time if you don’t properly clean your sauna.

An infrared sauna is a type of sauna that uses infrared bulbs and heaters, which will keep your sauna dry, so you won’t have to worry about moisture in the air. Infrared saunas will also warm up quicker than traditional dry saunas.

While there are fewer studies on the health benefits of infrared saunas specifically, there are quite a few benefits of general sauna use. If you have any concerns, you should always speak with your doctor. But with that disclaimer out of the way, let’s take a closer look at the benefits of regular sauna use.

RELATED: Cold Plunge vs Sauna

Increases Blood Flow and Muscle Recovery

Typical of use in all dry saunas, the increased temperature of a sauna is able to help increase blood flow and circulation. Specifically, a 2018 review2 points out that hot, dry sauna usage increases body temperature. This, in turn, makes blood flow around the skin more efficiently, although it decreases blood flow to internal organs.

RELATED: Benefits of Sauna After Workouts

The increased blood flow can help people recover from exercise faster. A small study from 20153 showed that infrared saunas penetrate heat into the body deeper than traditional saunas typically do—about 3 to 4 centimeters deep—and was found to be helpful in reducing soreness and recovering muscles after resistance training.

May Improve Heart Health

Infrared therapy has been shown to have the potential to improve heart health over repeated use, although research is still pretty new and more is needed. A study from 2009 from the Journal of Cardiology4 observed 129 patients suffering from chronic heart failure, who were exposed to infrared sauna therapy for weekly 15-minute sessions. A control group was also observed; after five years, the infrared therapy group had an 84% survival rate, significantly higher than the control group.

Another small study from 20085 showed that infrared sauna use can potentially help reduce blood pressure, as well as increase exercise tolerance in patients with COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In this study, patients were given 15-minute sauna sessions daily.

Helps Sweat Out Toxins

While not a unique feature of infrared light therapy or saunas, detoxification is often a buzzword around infrared saunas. In essence, infrared saunas can help you detox, but in the same way that any raised temperature would help you detox: by sweating. Sweating is one of the ways6 that your body can expel harmful toxins like heavy metals—aluminum, cadmium, and lead, amongst others.

RELATED: Are Saunas Good for Your Skin?

“Saunas not only provide benefits like better blood flow and decreased stress but also can help you detox through increased sweating,” says Dr. Michelle Koolaee. “This can make it easier to breathe, boosting your physical endurance, and with potential support for muscle recovery and growth and positive effects on your cognitive function.”

Buying Guide: What to Look for in the Best Infrared Saunas

There are quite a few things to consider when buying an infrared sauna. Since saunas in general can be pricey investments, make sure to do your research on the best saunas before making your final purchase.

Size

How much room you have for an infrared sauna is going to be a big factor in the options you have available. Make sure to look at each sauna’s exterior dimensions to determine if its footprint will fit in the space you’ve set aside for it. There are portable and compact options, too, such as infrared tents and blankets. You can also consider indoor or outdoor saunas, although infrared saunas are more often made for indoors.

RELATED: SaunaBox Go Review

The interior space of a sauna is just as important. Many infrared saunas can hold one or two people, but if you want to seat more at once, you may consider a larger sauna. Also consider that the maximum capacity of a sauna may be a tight fit. For example, if a sauna says it seats three people, it probably seats two comfortably, but for three people, you’ll be pretty crammed inside.

Cost

The budget will be a big factor, as infrared saunas can range from a couple hundred dollars for portable sauna tents, to over $7,000 for large five-person sauna rooms. Your budget will determine the overall size of the sauna you can buy. Fortunately, lots of infrared saunas have financing options available, so you’ll rarely need to drop thousands of dollars all at once on a sauna. You may even be able to use FSA/HSA funds to pay for the sauna.

Also, the value needs to make sense for the infrared sauna you’re considering. If a sauna is particularly pricey, there should be a reason behind it. It could be larger, made with finer materials, or have a lot of extra features that make the cost worth it. Find the sauna with the most value to you, with a budget you’re able to afford.

Performance

Infrared saunas can vary a bit in their peak temperature, but the best temperature for an infrared sauna is typically between 140 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Because the infrared heaters start producing infrared rays immediately, infrared saunas can warm up fairly quickly, reaching their top temperature within 20 to 30 minutes, getting you through the sauna experience quicker.

RELATED: Dry Sauna Benefits

Features and Amenities

Infrared saunas can have quite a few additional features and amenities, depending on the product. Common additional features include a temperature control panel (along with remote control through a WiFi connection), Bluetooth or auxiliary sound support, and even LED lighting.

Sometimes, the LED lighting can be adjusted through different colors, which is associated with chromotherapy lighting—an alternative medical treatment that supposedly can help alter the moods of patients. It has also often been regarded as pseudoscience. However, as scientists have developed more of an understanding of electromagnetic fields and radiation, more research has been done7 on this unique treatment.

Infrared Saunas FAQs

What is the top-rated infrared sauna?

We’ve tested dozens of infrared saunas, and our top pick is the Sun Home Equinox 2-Person Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna. It offers full-spectrum infrared heating, which uses three infrared wavelengths (near, mid, and far) to offer more comprehensive treatment. It’s also made from durable kiln-dried eucalyptus wood, comes with a limited lifetime warranty, and includes chromotherapy lights and Bluetooth speakers.

What type of infrared sauna is best for health?

The wavelengths that the different types of infrared saunas emit (near, mid, and far) all have different health benefits. A full-spectrum infrared sauna uses all three and, therefore, can provide a vast array of health benefits. Near-infrared wavelengths can promote collagen production, cell regeneration, and wound healing9. Mid-infrared wavelengths can help improve blood flow and reduce joint and muscle pain10. Far-infrared wavelengths also help with muscle pain relief and can help improve heart health, aid weight loss, and promote detoxification, too10.

What are the downsides of infrared saunas?

Infrared sauna use can lead to some health risks, such as dehydration, overheating, dizziness, and increased heart rate or blood pressure. Dr. Michelle Koolaee, who is double board-certified in internal medicine and rheumatology, recommends consulting with your doctor first “if you’re sick or have a fever, dehydrated, intoxicated, pregnant, or have cardiovascular conditions.”

How do you pick the right infrared sauna?

To pick the right infrared sauna, consider your budget, the seating capacity, and any additional features you may want, like Bluetooth speakers and chromotherapy lights. Look at how hot the sauna can get as well. Infrared saunas typically heat up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, though some go up to 165 degrees. You’ll also want to consider electrical requirements—some infrared saunas require a 220V or 240V outlet, which an electrician will need to install.

Is it okay to use an infrared sauna every day?

For most healthy adults, it’s okay to use an infrared sauna every day. However, some people may need to dial it back to three to four days per week. Additionally, according to Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, you should pay close attention to how long you spend in the sauna.

“Keep sauna sessions to 15 to 20 minutes and pay attention to how you’re feeling,” says Dr. Dasgupta. “Stay hydrated before, during, and after, and avoid going in on an empty stomach or right after intense exercise. If you start to feel dizzy or overheated, step out and cool down—it’s not worth pushing it.”
