Our tester cracks the seal on a new container of Ghost Vegan Protein.

In a sea of vanilla and chocolate, Ghost Vegan Protein powders stand out with their fun cereal-inspired flavors. They sound delicious, but are they a good plant-based option?

Whether you’re a long-time protein shake drinker looking for variety, a protein newbie wanting to build muscle, or a vegan looking to boost your protein intake, product reviews from trusted experts can help you choose the best vegan protein powder for your needs.

That’s where we come in! As a vegan registered dietitian and certified personal trainer, I’m teaming up with one of our GGR expert testers to provide the most comprehensive Ghost Vegan Protein review you’ll find anywhere.

Protein Powder Reviews From Fitness and Nutrition Experts

The GGR expert team consists of strength and conditioning coaches, registered dietitians, certified personal trainers, and nutrition coaches. Not only do we understand protein powder labels, we know the science behind protein recommendations and can objectively analyze each protein supplement we come across.

When reviewing different types of protein powders, our testers assess factors on a scale of 1 to 5, including:

  • Price
  • Formulation
  • Taste
  • Solubility
  • Side effects
  • Third-party testing
  • Customer service and experience

We also test every protein as part of our normal fitness and supplementation routines to get the best feel for how well they support active lifestyles.

A Quick Look at Ghost Vegan Protein

Ghost protein powders are easily recognizable from their vibrant packaging and flavors inspired by popular breakfast cereals and sweets. Most Ghost protein products are made from whey protein, but Ghost also caters to the plant-based crowd.

Soy-free and gluten-free, Ghost Vegan Protein fits a variety of dietary needs and preferences. It also includes a complementary vegan protein blend, providing all the essential amino acids necessary for building muscle, losing weight, or simply increasing your protein intake.

Before You Buy

  • Ghost Vegan Protein is available in plenty of fun, unique flavors.
  • Only unopened products can be returned to Ghost.
  • This vegan protein is more expensive than similar plant-based protein powders.

Is Ghost Vegan Protein Worth It?

Ghost Vegan Protein is a solid choice for vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians looking to consume more protein. It doesn’t contain added sugars, is available in many fun flavors, and offers a fairly standard 20 grams of protein per serving sourced from a complementary blend of pea protein, pumpkin protein, and watermelon seed protein.

Our tester looks at a shaker glass of Ghost Vegan Protein.

That said, at $1.79 per serving it isn’t the most affordable option for getting the benefits of plant-based protein powder and isn’t third-party tested.

Great for:

  • Vegans and flexitarians wanting to boost their protein intake
  • Those looking to build muscle size and strength
  • People who prefer sweeter protein powders

Not recommended for:

  • Those avoiding artificial ingredients
  • People looking for third-party tested supplements
  • Plant-based eaters on a tight budget

Experience Using Ghost Vegan Protein

We’ve tried dozens of protein supplements here at GGR, so we know exactly what to look for in a protein powder. When testing protein powders, we pay particular attention to their flavor and consistency when prepared according to the instructions on the product label.

A person mixing a shake with Ghost Vegan Protein.

When asked for their verdict, our GGR expert tester stated, “While this is an OK product, particularly in terms of a vegan protein powder, I wouldn’t buy this again, mostly because I prefer the Transparent Labs vegan protein that has more protein per serving.”

Price Per Serving

At regular price, one 28-serving container costs $49.99. At $1.79 per serving, this is more expensive than we’d expect for a protein powder that contains artificial flavors and sweeteners and isn’t third-party tested.

You can find other pea protein powders with the same or higher protein content for less. However, it isn’t the most expensive product we’ve seen, and the ingredients are pretty solid. We gave this protein a mid-range 3-star rating for price.

Formulation

Overall, we were impressed by the blend of plant proteins containing pea protein as the primary source. With 20 to 21 grams of protein per serving, each scoop can help you get enough protein to build muscle—especially if blended with protein-rich soy milk or almond milk.

RELATED: Pea Protein Benefits

A shaker glass of Ghost Vegan Protein next to the Nutrition Facts label on the container.

Watermelon seed protein1 is a nice addition, complementing the amino acid profile of pea protein with its excellent levels of the amino acid methionine.

I liked the use of high-oleic sunflower oil in their “creamer” blend. High-oleic versions of cooking oils are even higher in monounsaturated fats than the normal varieties, making them less vulnerable to going rancid.

The only reason we didn’t give Ghost Vegan Protein 5 stars for formulation was due to the inclusion of artificial flavors and sucralose, an artificial sweetener. While these ingredients are likely safe in the amounts used, many people prefer to avoid them.

Taste and Solubility

Our GGR expert tester tried the Chocolate Cereal Milk flavor, which they said “… tastes pretty good. It’s a bit sweet and does have an aftertaste.” They were pleasantly surprised by how good it tasted mixed only with water, an impressive feat for a vegan protein.

Our tester was also impressed by how well this protein mixed up in a shaker cup. They noted, “There is some film on the inside of the shaker after you mix it, but I don’t necessarily think this is abnormal. The texture is also nice, not too thick but not too thin.”

A person drinking Ghost Vegan Protein.

We gave it 4 stars for both taste and mixability, docking points for the aftertaste and filmy residue.

Side Effects

Pea protein is usually well-tolerated by most people since it doesn’t contain lactose and is considered an easily digestible protein.

Concerns about negative effects on gut health are common with sucralose, as rodent studies2 have shown gut inflammation with regular consumption. However, this hasn’t been confirmed in humans, and the amount of sucralose in this protein powder is likely much lower than the amounts fed to rodents.

It wasn’t surprising, therefore, that our GGR expert tester didn’t experience any negative side effects or digestive symptoms when trying this product.

Third-Party Testing

The FDA doesn’t regulate dietary supplements, including protein powders, so third-party testing is essential for ensuring that supplements are safe and contain the ingredients they claim to contain.

We were disappointed to see that Ghost Vegan Protein isn’t independently tested, especially considering the price point. We did appreciate that the product label is transparent and doesn’t include vague proprietary blends, so we rated this protein 3 out of 5 stars for third-party testing.

Customer Experience

We didn’t experience any problems requiring us to contact customer service, but we did notice that Ghost offers support via email and web chat for those who need to get in touch with them. There’s no phone number listed on their site.

While Ghost offers a great product, their returns policy left us wanting more. According to their website, only unopened products can be returned. So if you try their protein and don’t like it, you’re stuck with it.

You also only have 15 days from the date of delivery to return supplements, and items purchased on sale or with a discount code can’t be refunded.

For these reasons, Ghost received 3 out of 5 stars for their customer experience.

Ordering Ghost Vegan Protein

Ghost Vegan Protein can be ordered directly from the Ghost website or other retailers like Amazon and GNC.

Ordering from the Ghost website is simple: Simply select your preferred flavor, choose between a one-time purchase or automatic deliveries, add the product to your virtual bag, and proceed to checkout.

Standard ground shipping to Texas, where I live, was $9.49, bringing the total cost for one container of protein to $65. This is steep, but Ghost offers a couple of discounts.

You can choose their “Subscribe & Save” option to save 25% with automatic deliveries. They also offer 20% off when you sign up for their email list.

Customer Reviews

Disappointingly, Ghost doesn’t include customer reviews on their website, so we turned to the experience of customers purchasing from Amazon and GNC.

Ghost Vegan Protein has a 4-star rating from 1,281 Amazon reviews. Overall, customers like most of the flavors and say it’s easy to digest. Some reviews found the protein chalky or gritty, while others liked how evenly it blends in smoothies.

GNC customers rated it slightly higher at 4.2 stars. Most customers enjoyed the taste and consistency, although opinions differed on certain flavors. They also praised the high-quality ingredients list.

Final Verdict of Our Ghost Vegan Protein Review

Ghost Vegan Protein is a solid product, offering 20 grams of complete plant-based protein per serving. The flavors are nice, if a little sweet, but this product does have some disadvantages to consider:

  • More expensive than comparable pea proteins
  • Mixed reviews on grittiness
  • Not third-party tested
  • Can only be returned to Ghost if unopened
  • Contains artificial ingredients

If you’re still looking for a solid vegan protein, not to worry. Our roundup for the Best Pea Protein Powders lists our top choices!
