Nicole's Daughter In Little Spoons Box

When it comes to parenting, you’ll likely get plenty of advice from well-intentioned friends. They’ll tell you everything you need to know about sleep schedules and diaper changing, but there’s no way they can prepare you for the mental stress that goes into keeping your little one nourished and growing.

Figuring out what to feed your kiddos can be challenging on many levels. When do you introduce new foods to your baby? How can you avoid all the additives and preservatives? And on top of it all—when do you even have time to go to the grocery store?? Thankfully meal services like Little Spoon are changing the game and helping families enjoy their mealtimes again. We hope that these Little Spoon reviews from trusted GGR team members can help you decide if this meal delivery service is the right mealtime help for your family.

Experience Using Little Spoon

We put Little Spoon to the test, and by we, we mean our littles. GGR senior editor Nicole Davis (who has a 4-year-old named Ruby and a 2-year-old named Zora who taste-tested the meals) shares her thoughts on their experience with Little Spoon Plates:

“If my kids had devoured these meals, I’d definitely order again,” she said. “The meals are healthy and well-balanced and it’s not much easier than popping one in a microwave, especially on days when you’re super busy. Of the 12 meals we got the girls only really ate four of them, though—they didn’t care for the taste of the others.”

Price Per Meal

The price per meal will vary, depending on the stage of meals your little one is eating and the number of meals included in each delivery. Nicole, GGR senior editor, ordered 12 toddler meals and was charged $85, or $7.08 per meal—not bad considering the quality of ingredients. However, you can order as few as eight meals and as many as 24 meals per delivery, making your price per meal range from $5.83 to $7.50. The Early Finger Foods plan has an identical cost.

Little Spoon’s Babyblends, on the other hand, can be ordered in quantities of 14, 28, or 42 blends. The price per meal ranges from $2.96 to $4.04, with increased savings when purchased in bulk. The same applies to the smoothie plan. You can order as few as 12 smoothies and as many as 36 smoothies per delivery, with the prices ranging from $2.82 to $4.07 each.

Taste, Ingredient Quality, and Portion Size

Little Spoons Plate Nutritional Label

The ingredient quality of Little Spoon meals seems on par with a high-end meal delivery service. The company aims to provide quick and easy-to-prepare foods without artificial junk, and they pretty much hit the nail on the head. Little Spoon meals are prepared with lots of organic ingredients and other superfoods you can feel good about serving your kids.

The portion sizes can be somewhat objective based on your child’s individualized nutrition needs. Some days, they’re asking for snacks, snacks, and more snacks, while other days, they barely seem to eat anything at all.

As far as taste goes, it really depends on the kid. We all know how it is—some kids have strong opinions about flavors. And they might change day-to-day. *Parenting patience level: 100*

RELATED: Best Healthy Fast Food

“My kids are moderately picky—my oldest, almost 5, will almost always try what we serve but she mostly just wants to eat what she likes (aka chicken/chicken nuggets, some form of potato or pasta, fruit, cucumbers). My youngest, almost 3, is definitely more adventurous but also very much likes the typical kid foods. We’ve tried a bunch of the Little Spoons meals thus far: chicken and mini dumplings, chicken teriyaki, mac and three cheese with butternut squash, mini pancake puffs, broccoli bites, turkey tacos, pizza pocket,” says GGR senior editor Nicole.

Nicole's Daughter Eating Little Spoons Mac And Cheese

“Chicken and dumplings were the favorite by far. They were both fighting over who got the last bite. It was served with peas and carrots on the side that neither of them were clamoring over, but that’s pretty standard. They also liked the broccoli bites and pizza pocket. My youngest liked the mini pancake puffs, as well. The rest of the meals, they took one bite and didn’t want anymore, which is very sad and a waste.

“Smoothie pouches were mostly a miss, surprisingly,” she continues. “We make smoothies a lot at home so I thought they’d like them more. We LOVED the strawberry banana shake and did not like the other three. The other three were not quite as sweet as the SB one, so that’s probably why.”

Little Spoon meals are crafted with hidden veggies and preservative-free ingredients. Plus, their meals are free from artificial sugar and do not exceed 500 milligrams of salt per plate. And when it comes to protein sources, Little Spoon uses antibiotic and hormone-free proteins.

Nicole's Daughter Enjoying Little Spoons Meal

Currently, there are 28 toddler and kids’ meals to choose from, which means you may have to repeat some meals in your bi-weekly order, which Nicole mentions is typically fine for her kids. “If they like something, they don’t mind eating it again and again,” she says. “I also have to note that as a busy mom, I LOVE that there’s no cooking or cleanup involved!” Amen, sister.

Ordering, Packaging, and Shipping

Ordering your Little Spoon meals is pretty straightforward. Choose your meal plan based on your child’s age and select your desired meal frequency. Keep in mind that you’re ordering two weeks’ worth of meals at a time.

It’s pretty easy to design a meal plan you’re satisfied with. Simply add and subtract meals until you’re happy with what you have. You can filter the meal options by dietary needs, including gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, and plant-based, among others.

In terms of packaging and shipping, GGR senior editor Nicole Davis noted a few issues: “My box was supposed to show up on Friday, July 7, but it didn’t arrive until the 8th. I’ll give them grace as it was a holiday week and it’s probably not uncommon to see delays. However, when the box did arrive on my doorstep on the afternoon of the 8th, it had clearly been packed some time ago because the stuff was barely cold anymore. Plus, one of the gel ice packs had ruptured and the gel substance had gotten onto a few of the plates, causing the labels to rip or get wrinkled. I put the meals directly into the freezer and they seem fine, but just not an ideal experience overall. Maybe if I had ordered on a more regular week it wouldn’t have been an issue.”

Little Spoon Poor Packaging

Little Spoon meals can be stored in your fridge for up to 14 days or in your freezer for up to three months. Packaging is BPA-free, and many people find the plates to be reusable.

Bottom Line

Nurture Life offers nutritious full meals for kids as well as finger foods, snacks, and smoothies. Offered on a weekly basis, meals are $7.49, with the ability to get a discount and free shipping during your first week.

Little Spoon doesn’t have a monopoly on meal delivery services for kids. A comparable service is Nurture Life, which also offers a meal plan subscription to feed your little one with age-appropriate foods. You can order 6, 9, 12, or 15 items per week, ranging from $6.49 to $7.49 per item.

Brittany Combs, GGR’s social media manager, tested this service and said, “Their goal is to make healthy food taste good and to hide veggies in the food so kids don’t notice. They nailed it on some; all three of my kids liked the spaghetti and meatballs, mac n cheese, and fruit smoothies, but they did notice that it tasted different. Some meals they would take a few bites and say it was good, but then would fight me on finishing it and then ask for other food later, which was disappointing. Overall I thought it was a great service! I was just disappointed my kids are so picky and didn’t enjoy the taste as much as I would have hoped because it’s incredibly helpful to have these quick healthy meals available as busy as we are.”

She also reports that the ordering process was easy and customer service was easy to contact and helpful. There are also options to filter for vegetarian, gluten free, egg free, fish free, soy free, pork free, milk free, coconut free, sesame free, and beef free meals, although Brittany says there are significantly less options if you use these filters.
