The Best Garage Shelving

Best Garage Shelving Overall: Gladiator 4-Tier Welded Steel Garage Shelving Unit

Good for: Those needing a heavy-duty garage shelf that can hold just about anything

Best Overall

Gladiator 4-Tier Welded Steel Garage Storage Shelving Unit

GGR Score: 4.6 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

  • Fast and easy to assemble
  • Heavy duty steel construction
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • NSF-certified for food storage
  • Tool-free snap-and-lock assembly

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Available in different sizes and dimensions to perfectly fit your space
  • Ability to adjust shelving depending on what you are storing
  • Each shelf can support up to 2,000 lbs
  • Great size and stability for all storage needs

Cons

  • Wire shelves can allow small objects to fall through
  • Some customers had issues with broken welds upon receiving shelving

Bottom Line

This would be a perfect shelf for garage gyms, storage units, or anywhere you need to keep large objects neat and organized. Many customers liked their storage units so much that they bought more than one unit.

The Gladiator is above and beyond the favorite in the GGR Home Gym Community, as it had over two-thirds of the votes in our poll to the community. We can see why, it has one of the highest storage capacities in the market: 2,000 pounds on each of the four shelves, totalling to a massive 8,000 pounds of possible storage. This may truly be able to hold everything—including the kitchen sink.

The heavy-duty shelf does allow for some customization, with adjustable shelves to help fit any size storage you may need, along with different size options. It can be adjusted for large storage bins, or shortened to fit compact heavy items like kettlebells, weight chains, or dumbbells. It has a snap-and-lock assembly, not requiring tools at all; however, because of its weight, it wouldn’t hurt to have a second person around to help construct this shelf.

RELATED: Best Kettlebells

The steel wire shelves on the Gladiator 4-Tier shelf aren’t the best for placing small items, as they can fall through the shelves. I’d recommend using a bin to store those smaller items before placing them on the shelf.

Additionally, some reviews and customers talked about receiving the shelving with broken welds. Its lifetime limited warranty should have you covered if that happens. With that said, many customers report being so pleased with these shelves that they purchased multiple shelves.

Best Customizable Shelving: Rogue 3-Tier Mass Storage System

Good for: People needing a mass storage system that can be customized for their specific needs

Best Customizable Shelving

Rogue Fitness 3-Tier Mass Storage System

GGR Score: 4.4 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

  • Made in the USA
  • Designed for unlimited expansion
  • Must-have for home gyms with a lot of equipment
  • Constructed with 2” x 2” 11-gauge steel
  • Bookshelf-style storage rack can be easily organized

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Shelves offer the perfect angle to pull the dumbbells on and off
  • Can be used for dumbbells, kettlebells, exercise balls, and more
  • So many options to customize perfectly for your space
  • Heavy duty casters are available for added mobility

Cons

  • With all of the different options, some customers found needed hardware missing from their products upon arrival
  • Add-ons can add up very quickly to an already expensive core unit

Bottom Line

Anyone who has been in the fitness community for any amount of time knows that Rogue Fitness products are built to last. The price tag can be a bit intimidating, but you can always depend on the quality and craftsmanship of each piece. This is a great unit to start with and build out as you add gym space and equipment.

Sometimes you need storage that will fit your space just right. For the Goldilocks in all of us, there is Rogue’s 3-Tier Mass Storage System. This modular storage system starts off with three tiers dual bars, for both bumper plate and exercise ball storage. The shelves can be customized for dumbbell storage (a slanted shelf) or for kettlebells with a flat shelf. Being modular, it can also be built out and expanded to two or more shelves.

With a weight capacity of 1,000 pounds, it’ll support more than enough weights for most people’s needs. Also, because the storage system is modular, it can be customized to suit any needs to hold any weighted items. In addition, Rogue offers an add-on of heavy-duty casters to make the shelving mobile. That can be helpful because even without loaded weights, this shelf is heavy, at over 250 pounds.

Additionally, due to its massive customization and personalization, some reviews state that the shelving comes missing essential hardware. Rogue is pretty good with their customer service if that happens to you, so I wouldn’t fear this too much.

While the customization is great to suit your particular needs, the 3-Tier Mass Storage System is expensive, starting at $625. Any add-on or new shelf only adds to that price tag. If money isn’t an issue though, this storage system can get you exactly what you’re looking for in your gym space.

  • Meets your storage needs for a variety of gym equipment, including bumper plates, sandbags, dumbbells, medicine balls, and kettlebells
  • Doesn’t take up a lot of your space, giving you sufficient storage space and more open room to workout

Cons

  • Heavier than many core storage units
  • A little more expensive than similar options

Bottom Line

This storage unit offers a great amount of versatility along with a solid structure and can be the perfect addition to your gym space. With a variety of add-on accessories to meet your gym’s specific needs, you won’t have to worry about big, bulky shelving taking up too much space.

Titan is great at making a good quality product with value, and their Mass Storage System is no different. Starting at half the price of other mass storage systems, the TItan Mass Storage System can hold a good amount of weight, and also has decent customization options for your specific needs.

Built with 13-gauge powder-coated steel, the shelf has a rated weight capacity of 2,200 pounds, which will hold pretty much any weighted equipment you have in your gym. The system can be purchased with two or three tiers; there are also two options for the length of the storage system. The shelving comes with bars for loading bumper plates and medicine balls, but can be replaced with a rotating shelf for dumbbells or kettlebells (purchased separately).

RELATED: Best Bumper Plates

Although there is great value in the Titan Mass Storage System, it is still pricey, and customization only adds to the price tag. Also, it is a heavy shelving unit, maxing out at 152 pounds with the largest option. Still, if storing plates and weights is your biggest need, the Titan Mass Storage System is a solid choice.

Best Budget Shelving: Gorilla 5-Shelf Rack

Good for: People needing some gym storage but at a budget-friendly price

Best Budget Shelving

Gorilla 5-Shelf Rack

GGR Score: 4 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

  • Solid steel frame
  • Easy to assemble
  • Corrosion-resistant powder coat finish
  • 5-shelf unit allows you to store a lot of items

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Particle board shelves keep small objects from falling through
  • Can be used for all types of storage
  • Designed to be functional, efficient, and look nice with any decor
  • Sleek and strong all-in-one

Cons

  • Some customers had issues with products coming in rough or damaged packaging
  • Can be more difficult to get pieces to go together if they have too much paint on the metal pieces

Bottom Line

This simple, yet functional shelving unit was so well-liked by most customers that, if their space allowed, they purchased more than one! It fell in between the super heavy-duty styles and the more flimsy lightweights, offering a middle ground that could be utilized in home gyms, pantries, garages, and storage rooms.

The Gorilla 5-Shelf Rack is our pick for best budget shelving, as it provides five sturdy 4-foot-long shelves each capable of holding up to 500 pounds. That’s 2,500 pounds of storage, all for under $100. Suitable for multiple types of storage, Gorilla’s rack is a great shelf for a low cost.

The Gorilla shelving rack is no frills, but it gets the job done when it comes to gym storage. With its storage capacity, it can handle most equipment storage needs. Additionally, the particle board shelving prevents any small gym equipment from falling through the cracks like it could with wire steel shelving.

The solid steel frame is finished with a corrosion resistant powder coating, and the rack is pretty easy to assemble. Still, some reviews discussed that the pieces may be difficult to put together if the paint is thicker on the metal joints. A little bit of sanding might be needed, so just be aware of that. In addition, the particle board doesn’t react well to excessive moisture, so try your best not to spill anything on those shelves.

Furthermore, some customers had issues with the product arriving in damaged packaging. Mindful of this, the Gorilla 5-Shelf Rack is still a shelf with great value.

Ultra Budget Shelving: Amazon Basics Adjustable Shelving Unit

Good for: People needing a little extra shelving and storage for very cheap

Ultra Budget Shelving

Amazon Basics Adjustable Shelving Unit

GGR Score: 3.9 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

  • Versatile storage unit
  • Durable steel construction
  • Black-coated chrome finish
  • Height-adjustable shelving
  • No tools are required for assembly

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Perfect storage unit for smaller spaces
  • Designed specifically for efficient storage and a reliable structure
  • Affordable price for the quality of product
  • Different number of shelves and widths make it easy to customize for your space

Cons

  • Materials aren’t quite as heavy duty as some competitors
  • Smaller items can fall through wire shelving

Bottom Line

While you might not want to load this one down with your heaviest weights, it is a solid option for smaller spaces and those who are looking to make their space more organized and efficient. This unit also doesn’t require a large investment, which is super helpful, especially when you’re first starting your home gym space!

Sometimes, you only need a little bit of extra storage, and you don’t want to spend much at all for it. Amazon Basics has you covered with their Adjustable Shelving Unit. A three-tier shelf, it holds up to 250 pounds on each shelf, and is about 2 feet long and 30 inches high. If you’re looking for a spot to store extra lifting chalk, or bar collars, this is a fantastic choice, for less than $40, too.

Constructed from alloy steel, plastic, and metal, this shelving unit is small and lightweight—about 9 pounds. It also comes with wheels, making it convenient to move around in your gym, until you find a permanent home for it. The shelves can be adjusted in 1-inch increments as well, meaning they can be adjusted exactly for whatever items you wish to put on the shelf.

Wire shelving is easy to clean, as it doesn’t accumulate dust as easily as wood shelving; however, the wire frame makes it easier for small pieces of gym equipment to fall through and off the shelf. I’d recommend using a storage tub or bin to secure the smaller pieces if you worry about them falling through wire grating.

Assembly can be difficult, so we’d recommend watching the video Amazon provides on its page to understand a bit about the assembly. It also wouldn’t hurt to have a friend help with assembly, as some smaller pieces are hard to align properly alone.

While this shelf is not made to load your heaviest equipment and weights, it is a great, small shelf for a little bit more storage if you need it, and at a very low cost.

Best Wall-Mounted Shelving: PRx Wall-Mount Dumbbell Storage

Good for: Home gym owners that need to prioritize floor space over wall space

Best Wall-Mounted Shelving

PRx Wall-Mount Dumbbell Storage

GGR Score: 4.2 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

  • Made in the USA
  • Sleek, unique design
  • Helps you make the most of small spaces
  • Made with 12-gauge steel
  • Versatile mounting design

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Black powdercoat gives sophisticated look to any gym setup
  • 1 shelf can store multiple pairs of dumbbells (depending on weight)
  • Can mount shelves either flat or angled
  • Shelves can also be used to store other gym equipment, such as kettlebells or medicine balls

Cons

  • Need to have proper stud spacing in order for shelves to work properly
  • Shelves are a little more expensive than typical shelving units that hold similar weight

Bottom Line

If you have a small space and are needing somewhere to put your dumbbells so you can have more room to complete a workout, the Wall-Mount Dumbbell Storage shelves could be a perfect solution. Not only do you get more space in your room, but it also makes it easier to clean the floors and not worry about tripping over equipment.

Floor space is essential in a home gym, and in smaller spaces, that statement rings even truer. With that said, wall-mounted shelving can free up some more floor space. PRx Wall-Mount Dumbbell Storage is our pick for the best wall-mounted shelving. With an adjustable angle of shelving and a 1,000-pound weight capacity, these shelves will be able to hold most anything for your home gym.

You can purchase up to four PRx dumbbell shelves at a time to save on cost. Each shelf is 3 feet long, and can be mounted at an angle for dumbbell storage, or flat for kettlebell and other storage. This makes these shelves pretty versatile, able to be adjusted for your needs. The shelves also are made to work on studs between 8 and 30 inches, allowing it to fit on your wall with a variety of stud spacing.

Built in the U.S., the 12-gauge steel is solid and durable, but to hold 1,000 pounds, you will need it on studs. Make sure to read the instructions, too, as to hold dumbbells and heavy weights on a wall-mounted shelf, it needs to be built correctly. All mounting hardware is included with the shelving, which helps a lot. Still, make sure to follow instructions when you install these shelves.

If your stud spacing does not fall in the proper range, the PRx Wall Mount Dumbbell Storage simply won’t work for your space. Additionally, they are expensive compared to freestanding shelves that provide similar storage. Still, these wall-mounted dumbbell shelves will save you a lot of floor space, so if the price is worth the floor space, these are a great choice.

Best Heavy-Duty Shelving: Dewalt Industrial Storage Shelf

Good for: Anyone needing a compact shelf that can store the heaviest gym equipment

Best Heavy-Duty Shelving

DeWalt Industrial Storage Shelf

GGR Score: 4.2 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

  • Large storage surface
  • Made with alloy steel
  • Locking pins secure the crossbeams
  • Nylon feet help to protect and prevent any damage to your floors
  • Multiple support straps

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Received high ratings for sturdiness, value for the money, and easy installation
  • Designed and engineered for heavy duty level storage
  • Adjustable shelves give you the ability to customize your space and meet all of your storage needs
  • Solid enough to be used to store fitness equipment

Cons

  • A little on the pricier side for the size of the storage unit
  • Some customers felt that the instructions could be made simpler

Bottom Line

Strong and stout would be a good way to sum this shelving unit up. If you are looking for something that can withstand a lot of weight, but not take up valuable space, this is a great option to try. While it may seem a little expensive for the size of the unit, the materials used to build it are worth it.

When it comes to heavy-duty shelving, we recommend the Dewalt Industrial Storage Shelf. Just over 4 feet wide and 4 feet high, this fairly compact industrial storage rack can hold just about anything you throw at it (please don’t really throw anything at your shelving, please). Each shelf can hold up to 1,500 pounds of weight, equipment, and storage, making this one of the best heavy-duty shelving units on the market, and a bit smaller than most other options.

The 68-pound unit is assembled easily, and also can be paired with another shelf, if your gym space has the room for it. If you are looking to use its max capacity, Dewalt recommends bolting the shelving down for added stability. If bolting down your shelf isn’t an option, the shelf can still hold most anything pretty well. Many customers give it high ratings for its stability and value.

Additionally, the shelves have nylon feet to help protect your gym flooring from surface damage. The shelves are adjustable as well, making this shelving unit great to store a diverse range of fitness equipment.

At just over $250, the Dewalt Industrial Storage Shelf is a little more expensive than shelving at a similar size. Also, some reviews claim the instructions could have been made simpler. With that said, this storage rack provides immense value in a compact shelf.

Other Garage Shelving We Researched

Not all garage shelving makes the final cut. We researched and tested other shelves, and had a couple that we liked, but simply didn’t make the list for one reason or another. With that said, we can still and do recommend them.

  • Rogue Universal Storage System: Rogue always has a quality product, and the Universal Storage System is no different. It’s a two- or three-tier mass storage system that can be customized for weight plates, dumbbells, and kettlebells. We felt there were more customization options with other mass storage systems, but this storage system has a compact design that could work for those with smaller spaces to work with.
  • Hart Utility Shelf: The Hart Utility Shelf has five shelves, each capable of supporting 800 pounds, which will be more than enough storage and weight capacity for most home gym owners. While it is a pretty good budget option, at only $150, we went with some other budget options that provided just a little more value.

How We Picked and Tested the Best Garage Shelving

To pick the best garage shelving for this list, we did what we normally would, and then changed it up just a bit. We started with an initial list, drawing from both research and our team’s own experience with different gym storage systems.

After making our initial list, we changed it up a bit and reached out to our community to get your opinion on what worked and what didn’t. Our community’s hot takes on their storage needs helped us finalize our list, to give you our top picks for the best garage shelving that cover a variety of needs and uses.

Benefits of Garage Shelving

Perhaps the benefits to having a garage storage rack or shelf won’t be as obvious as how your biceps will feel from the best curl bars, but there are benefits nevertheless. Adding a little bit of storage to your garage gym will help declutter your gym and let you have the optimal space for your workouts.

Save Space with Storage Space

Space is vital in a garage gym. Home gym owners are always searching for the best way to squeeze a little more room into their gym. Unless you lucked out with your garage’s size, most home gyms are not anywhere near the size of a commercial gym, so it’s important to keep your space free to use for a variety of workouts and exercises. Once you’re done with that equipment, you need it back out of the way.

Garage shelving can help keep the space you use down to a minimum. A freestanding shelf with some storage bins for equipment you’re not using at the time—foam rollers or seasonal sports equipment, for example—will keep the floor space open. Keeping an open space will allow you to use your gym for a multitude of exercises, whether it be deadlifts, jumping rope, or simply stretching during a cool-down.

Organize with a Storage Rack

Another big benefit of a storage shelving unit is that it can help you organize all the equipment you have in your garage gym. You can stow all your smaller items—like hip circles or spring collars—in a storage bin, so they never get lost in a back corner. It’s a lot easier to pull out equipment for your workout when you know where everything is.

What to Look for in Garage Shelving

Just like when you are looking for the best squat rack or power cage for your home gym, there is a lot to consider when finding the right shelving for your garage space. You want to make sure you are getting the best value for your purchase. Here are some main points to think over before you buy:

Weight Capacity

One of the biggest things to look at is what you are looking to store, and how much it can weigh; you’ll need a shelf that can support your equipment’s weight. This is probably more important than just normal storage shelving, because gym equipment can be pretty heavy when you are talking about medicine balls, bumper plates, and kettlebells.

A shelf with steel construction will provide some of the largest weight capacity, but if you are looking to only store lighter equipment like foam rollers and lifting chalk, a wood or plastic shelf should provide more than enough support.

Additionally, if the main need for storage is weight plates and dumbbells, a mass storage system might be a great option, as they have the weight capacity to hold lots of weighted equipment, but also store bumper plates, dumbbells, kettlebells, and medicine balls in a way that keeps your equipment easily accessible. This garage storage system can be more expensive than other solutions, but it is very convenient, especially with storing bumper plates.

Footprint

As I’ve said before, space is a commodity in your home gym, so even though a shelf can save space, you need to make sure it can fit in your garage in the first place. If your garage has low ceilings, a five-tier shelf may not be the ideal option. Some of these taller shelves can be built out into longer, shorter shelves as well, which will help fit your gym—although it will take up more floor space.

Ceiling-Mounted, Wall-Mounted, or Freestanding Shelving

One thing to consider about shelving is if you want a freestanding shelving rack, or if you want to mount it on a wall or your garage ceiling.

Ceiling mounts can store away clutter and seasonal items that you hardly ever need to look at through the rest of the year. However, overhead garage storage can take away from the ceiling height you have for overhead work, and isn’t feasible if it gets in the way of your garage door opening anyway. So I wouldn’t consider this unless you already have high ceilings in your gym space.

A wall-mounted shelf can save quite a bit of room by keeping floor space open. However, wall space can also be a commodity in home gyms, so it will take away some space for other storage, or for doing some exercises on the wall (like handstand push-ups). The other issue is that moving a wall-mounted shelf requires a lot more work than a freestanding shelf.

The nice thing about a freestanding shelf is that it can be mobile. If you don’t like where it is in one corner, move it to another corner. This is super convenient as you build out your home gym, as you never have to commit to the space it takes up, like you would with a mounted shelf. The one drawback of a freestanding shelf is that it will take up floor space. Although it will ultimately help save space, it’s important to be mindful of the space the shelf itself takes up.

FAQs for Best Garage Shelving

What are the benefits of using garage shelving?

Using garage storage shelves can save space by getting clutter off the garage floor. In addition, a proper shelving system can add a level of organization, which will allow easy accessibility to storage bins with equipment, as well as weight plates or other free weights.

What is the strongest shelving?

While plastic and wood shelves can provide a sturdy and solid weight capacity, metal shelving is going to be strongest and can provide the highest weight capacity per shelf. Our best overall pick for garage shelving can hold up to 2,000 pounds per shelf. Here our our other picks for best garage shelving:

-Best Garage Shelving Overall: Gladiator 4-Tier Welded Steel Garage Shelving Unit
-Best Customizable Shelving: Rogue 3-Tier Mass Storage System
-Best Weight Plate Shelving: Titan Fitness Mass Storage System
-Best Budget Shelving: Gorilla 5-Shelf Rack
-Ultra Budget Shelving: Amazon Basics Adjustable Shelving Unit
-Best Wall-Mounted Shelving: PRx Wall-Mount Dumbbell Storage
-Best Heavy-Duty Shelving: Dewalt Industrial Storage Shelf

Is plastic or metal shelving better?

Each type of shelving has strengths and weaknesses. While metal is typically a stronger shelving solution than plastic, it will also be susceptible to rust and corrosion. Plastic shelving will not rust, and it’s also lightweight, and can be moved around much easier. This can be great if you’re still figuring out your final layout for your garage gym…and let’s be real, it’s never quite finished.
