Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein Review

Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein is, in our opinion, one of the best protein powder without artificial sweeteners. That’s great and all, but it’s not just about what it doesn’t have—it’s what it does, too.

As the name suggests, this protein supplement contains grass-fed whey, staying true to Orgain’s clean-ingredient mission. It’s also claimed to be rich in prebiotics and fiber—two uncommon finds in a protein powder.

But even clean, unique formulas come with trade-offs, and Orgain is no exception. Our rigorous hands-on testing revealed a few drawbacks—but also some strengths. In this Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein review, we’ll break down exactly what we found. Now, get your shakers ready and let’s get scooping.

Medical disclaimer: This article is intended for educational and informational purposes only. It is not intended as a substitute for medical advice. For health advice, contact a licensed healthcare provider. GGR also recommends choosing a product that has been third-party tested for quality.

We Know Our Whey Around 100+ Protein Supplements

GGR’s testing team of certified personal trainers, registered dietitian nutritionists, nutrition coaches, and strength specialists has personally tested more than 100 protein powders across a range of categories and intended fitness goals. The purpose? To find out what’s actually worth your money (and your taste buds).

We evaluate each scoop based on our GGR supplement testing methodology, scoring products across key factors such as:

  • Formulation: We prioritize protein powders with at least 20 grams of high-quality protein with little to no unnecessary ingredients. If extras are included, they should be beneficial, like BCAAs for muscle support or prebiotics to help improve your gut health.
  • Taste: We evaluate taste through GGR tester feedback and customer reviews to find options that taste great without an overly “protein-y” flavor. We also check for any bitter or artificial aftertastes and score accordingly.
  • Solubility: A good protein powder should mix smoothly without clumps, grit, or separation. We test how easily each powder dissolves in liquid and whether it stays smooth over time.
  • Third-Party Testing: Dietary supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA, so we place a high value on third-party testing from trusted organizations like Informed Sport, Informed Choice, NSF Certified for Sport, or BSCG. Transparent labeling with clearly-listed ingredients and dosages—and no proprietary blends—help build trust and enhance a product’s score.
  • Value: We compare the price per serving against industry averages, with the best values usually under $1.50 per serving. That said, pricier powders can still rank highly if they deliver exceptional ingredients and overall quality.

What our tester says:

“Yes, there was some residue along with a few ‘floaties,’ but nothing that would turn me off from the protein completely.”

A Quick Look at Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein

Orgain prides itself on using high-quality ingredients, opting for certified organic compounds whenever possible, and avoiding soy, carrageenan, and GMOs. The brand’s product line includes plant-based protein powders, protein shakes, protein bars, creatine, keto collagen, superfoods, and probiotic blends—all claiming “GOOD taste.”

A container of Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein next to a portable blender
A container of Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein next to a portable blender

Orgain stresses that sense of “GOOD,” but you know how we do things at GGR. We’ve tested many of its products—like Orgain Collagen Peptides and Simple Plant Protein—but now, we’re wheying in on its grass-fed, pasture-raised protein powder. This profile is also non-GMO, soy-free, gluten-free, kosher, and free from added sugars, artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors, and preservatives.

Sounds like a solid pick, but there are some things to consider before scooping this up.

Before You Buy

  • While Orgain is well-known for its organic products, its grass-fed whey protein powder is not USDA Certified Organic, though it is formulated with many organic ingredients.
  • There’s no indication of third-party testing for banned substances—a critical consideration for competitive athletes.
  • While it doesn’t contain artificial sweeteners, it does include erythritol, which is a naturally derived sugar alcohol that may cause digestive issues for some individuals.

Is Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein Worth It?

Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein costs about $2.00 per serving without a subscription, placing it in the mid-range amongst the best protein powders. Also, with 21 grams of protein per serving, it sits on the lower end compared to the 25-gram average.

That said, while Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein might not be everyone’s cup of tea (err, shaker bottle) when it comes to protein supplementation, it can be a great option for several parties.

Great for:

  • People who value pasture-raised, organic protein
  • Anyone looking for a high-quality protein source to support daily protein goals and wellness
  • Those who want both protein and gut health ingredients in one formulation

Not recommended for:

  • Those seeking a vegan protein, including individuals following a fully plant-based or dairy-free diet
  • Competitive athletes or individuals looking for third-party-tested products for banned-substance safety, label accuracy, and purity
  • Anyone who appreciates flavor variety—this whey protein is only available in chocolate and vanilla flavor options

Experience Using Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein

Anthony O’Reilly, CPT, CNC, was our tester for this Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein review. While the Vanilla Bean flavor didn’t quite win him over, other perks—like the formulation and Orgain’s customer service—might’ve given him reasons to overlook some drawbacks.

Let’s dive into Anthony’s full hands-on testing, shall we?

Price Per Serving

Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein costs $39.99 for a 20-serving tub, averaging about $2.00 per serving. You can save 15% with a subscription, though, lowering the cost to about $33.99 per tub or $1.70 per serving.

For context, this is on the pricier side when compared to other protein powders we’ve had in testing, though the grass-fed formulation may warrant the cost for some users. As such, we rate the overall value at 2 out of 5.

Formulation

We awarded Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein Concentrate a respectable 4 out of 5 for its high-quality protein source, organic ingredient base, and absence of artificial sweeteners.

Each two-scoop serving provides 21 grams of protein from grass-fed whey concentrate—a complete protein with all the essential amino acids and BCAAs your body needs for muscle repair, recovery, and overall health. Whey protein concentrate is less processed than protein isolate, so it retains more of its natural carbs, lactose, and fats, as well.

Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein nutrition facts label
Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein nutrition facts label

Orgain’s macros reflect this, with up to 11 grams of carbohydrates and 3 grams of fat per serving—higher than leaner options like Nutricost Whey Protein Concentrate, with just 3 grams each of fat and carbs. This less-lean profile partly comes from the organic creamer base, which includes organic high oleic sunflower oil and acacia1, which is a prebiotic fiber for gut support. Still, fiber remains modest—under 1 gram in Vanilla Bean and 2 grams in Creamy Chocolate Fudge.

Sweetness comes from organic erythritol and reb-A (a stevia-derived extract). While naturally derived, both can cause digestive issues or leave an aftertaste for some people.

In total, Orgain’s grass-fed whey concentrate can serve as a clean protein option without artificial flavors and sweeteners. It has a higher carb and fat content, though its complete amino acid profile makes it a solid option for supporting daily protein goals and overall wellness.

Taste and Solubility

Anthony rated the Vanilla Bean flavor at 3.5 out of 5, describing it as “pretty plain and inoffensive.” He added, “It’s not the worst thing I’ve had, but I’ve definitely tried more flavorful, enjoyable protein powders in my time.”

Solubility scored a bit higher at 4 out of 5. “The powder seemed to blend easily in my standard shaker bottle,” Anthony states. “Yes, there was some residue along with a few ‘floaties,’ but nothing that would turn me off from the protein completely.”

Our tester's fully-blended shake of Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein
Our tester’s fully-blended shake of Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein

His pro tip: Take your time shaking to ensure thorough mixing, and give it an extra shake in between sips.

Because taste is subjective, Orgain suggests customizing this powder by mixing it with your preferred liquid of choice—such as water, almond milk, or oat milk—or blending it into a smoothie. You could also add it to overnight oats, brownies, or other baked goods for an extra protein boost.

Side Effects

Anthony rated this category at 4 out of 5. While the formulation itself wasn’t off-putting, he noted, “I was noticeably gassy post-consumption, either as a result of the powder or my pre-training dinner. Regardless, this may not be an ideal supplement for those with heightened stomach sensitivities—especially those sensitive to lactose.”

Our tester grabbing a scoop of Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein
Our tester grabbing a scoop of Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein

Whey protein concentrate naturally contains more lactose, which may explain Anthony’s digestive side effects. Erythritol, a sugar alcohol, could be another potential culprit.

Still, individual responses can vary widely. Many Amazon reviewers report it’s easy to digest, while others mention experiencing issues—most often linked to the included erythritol.

Third-Party Testing

Anthony notes, “According to online research, the Orgain manufacturing facilities are monitored for purity and cleanliness, but there are no certifying marks for individual products.” I also couldn’t find any certifications from trusted third-party organizations, like NSF Certified for Sport or Informed-Sport.

That said, we value Orgain’s transparent formulations and solid manufacturing practices. Without third-party certifications, though—especially for banned substance testing that competitive athletes rely on—we have to rate Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein at a conservative 3 out of 5 for the category.

Legion Whey+ is a clean, sustainable protein powder that also is macro-friendly and a great option for anyone looking for a clean protein supplement. Many of our testers have bought this with their own money because they love the taste and easy mixability.

What our tester says:

“It tastes like the milk at the bottom of a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch.”

Like Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein, Legion Whey+ offers grass-fed protein free from artificial sweeteners and flavors. However, their key differences may sway which one most suits you:

  • Protein type: Orgain contains whey protein concentrate, which contains more carbs, fat, and lactose compared to the protein isolate in Legion Whey+. As such, Legion Whey+ is a leaner option and may be a better choice for those with lactose intolerance.
  • Sweeteners: Orgain sweetens its formula with organic reb-A (stevia extract) and erythritol, a sugar alcohol that may cause digestive issues for some. Legion Whey+ avoids sugar alcohols, using only stevia leaf extract.
  • Flavors: Orgain comes in two classic chocolate and vanilla flavors, while Legion offers over 20 available tastes—including Oatmeal Cream Pie, Peanut Butter Fudge, Pumpkin Pie, and an unflavored option.
  • Third-party certifications: Orgain does not currently provide third-party certifications for its grass-fed whey protein. In contrast, Legion Whey+ is tested in an ISO 17025-accredited lab and certified by Labdoor for purity, potency, and absence of banned substances. It also carries Truly Grass Fed and Animal Welfare Approved certifications.
  • Price and value: Prices are neck and neck at about $2.00 per serving each. For the same price, Legion delivers a leaner macro profile, greater flavor variety, and third-party verification, while Orgain offers an organic-focused ingredient list and the creamier texture of whey concentrate.

Customer Experience

Orgain offers a 60-day refund policy through its convenient online Returns & Exchange Center. Even better, the brand covers the cost of the return label, which is not-so-common in the supplement space.

Orgain sweetens the deal with a rewards program and a subscription option that includes free shipping. Standard orders over $75 ship free, while orders below that threshold carry a flat $9.95 fee.

GGR expert Anthony sums it up best, noting, “Great customer service, sales, multiple contact methods, and overall good policies.” With that in mind, we awarded Orgain’s customer service a perfect 5 out of 5.

Ordering Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein

Ordering Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein is a simple process through the brand’s website. Choose your flavor and quantity, select a one-time purchase or a subscription plan (every 30, 45, 60, or 90 days), and complete your checkout with the appropriate shipping and payment info.

You can also find it on Amazon—often at a lower price and free shipping for Amazon Primers—but you’ll miss out on Orgain’s perks, like its rewards program and return policies.

Customer Reviews

Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein holds an impressive 4.7 out of 5 rating on its website, based on nearly 200 reviews. For a less brand-influenced perspective, Amazon lists a still-strong 4.5 out of 5 from nearly 3,200 reviews.

Customers mostly praise its high-quality ingredients, great taste, creamy texture, and versatility—whether enjoyed as a shake or mixed into oats and smoothies. However, some note mixed feelings about its value, and a portion of users report digestive issues from the erythritol or an aftertaste from the stevia.

Final Verdict of Our Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein Review

Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein Concentrate delivers a clean, mostly organic formula without artificial flavors or sweeteners. Here’s our last scoop before you shake and sip:

  • Provides 21 grams of complete protein per two-scoop serving, sourced from grass-fed whey concentrate, delivering all the essential amino acids your body cannot produce on its own.
  • Uses whey concentrate and, compared to isolates, contains more fats, carbohydrates, and lactose, potentially making it less suitable for those with lactose intolerances.
  • Contains up to 11 grams of carbs and 3 grams of fat per serving, making it slightly less lean than isolate-based proteins but offering a small amount of fiber and prebiotics.
  • Naturally sweetened with organic erythritol and reb-A (stevia extract), which, while not artificial, may cause digestive discomfort or a lingering aftertaste for some people.
  • Available only in Creamy Chocolate Fudge and Vanilla Bean, though many customers enjoy the flavors both on their own or mixed into smoothies or oats.
  • Lacks third-party testing certifications, which may be a concern for competitive athletes or those seeking verified purity. And while it’s formulated with mostly organic ingredients, it is not Certified Organic like other Orgain products.
Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein

Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein uses whey protein concentrate within its formulation to deliver 21 grams of the vital macronutrient in each serving. Be aware, though, that this protein option does not carry third-party testing certificates, and there are just two flavors to choose from.

Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein: FAQs

How much does Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein cost?

Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein costs $39.99 for 20 servings, breaking down to about $2.00 per serving. Subscribing can save you 15%, bringing the cost to roughly $33.99 per tub, or roughly $1.70 per serving.

Can I drink Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein every day?

While you can drink Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein daily, remember, it’s not a meal replacement. It should be used to supplement your diet, not replace whole meals, to ensure you meet your daily calorie and macronutrient needs beyond protein.

Can you build muscle with Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein?

Supporting muscle growth is one of the top benefits of protein powder, especially when it provides all essential amino acids like Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein. But whether you’re adding it to a breakfast smoothie or a post-workout shake, the key is ensuring you’re getting enough total protein and calories throughout the day—and progressively overloading your resistance training—to fuel muscle growth.

Is Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein a good protein powder?

Orgain Grass-Fed Whey Protein can be a good choice for many, offering 21 grams of grass-fed whey protein per serving with mostly organic ingredients and added prebiotics for digestive support. However, while it’s free from artificial sweeteners, it contains erythritol and lactose, which may cause digestive issues in some individuals. It also lacks third-party certifications and shows no evidence of banned-substance testing—a critical consideration for competitive athletes.
