A Quick Look at Orgain Collagen Peptides

Orgain is best known for their line of whey and plant-based protein powders and ready-to-drink protein shakes, but they also have hydration powders, greens powders, probiotics, and several collagen supplements.

Their other collagen offerings include collagen plus superfood powder (think kale, wheatgrass, and berries), collagen creamer, keto collagen, and plant-based protein powders with added collagen. All of their collagens contain grass-fed bovine collagen but differ in amount of collagen per serving.

Their OG collagen peptides, which we’re reviewing here, are available unflavored or in chocolate flavor and contain 20 grams of collagen per serving.

Before You Buy

  • The unflavored has 22 servings per container and the chocolate has just 17 servings, which makes it cost more per serving.
  • Both versions contain the same amount of collagen and similar amounts of protein per serving.
  • This collagen dissolves pretty easily and can be added to cold or hot liquids, smoothies, batters, oatmeal, yogurt, and more.

Are Orgain Collagen Peptides Worth It?

Coming in at a little over $2 per serving for the chocolate flavor, it’s on the higher end of the spectrum for collagen proteins. It might be worth it to you, though—especially if you like the sound of chocolate collagen! Of course, collagen comes from animals so we don’t recommend it if you’re following a plant-based diet.

A person is making a shake with Orgain Collagen Peptides.

Both versions pack 20 grams of collagen and almost the same amount of protein per serving. Some collagen peptide supplements contain half this amount per serving, so Orgain is a good choice for anyone prioritizing protein intake or who may not like using protein powders.

Great for:

  • Individuals who want a higher amount of collagen per serving
  • Chocolate lovers
  • Anyone following a low-carb, ketogenic, or paleo diet

Not recommended for:

  • Anyone looking for a 30-day supply of collagen
  • Vegetarians and vegans
  • Those who need third-party-certified supplements

Experience Using Orgain Collagen Peptides

Lauren Strong, a certified personal trainer and GGR senior staff writer, tested the chocolate Orgain collagen peptides. She was super impressed by the rich chocolate flavor and versatility of this collagen. She drank it mixed into both cold and hot liquids and loved the taste every way she tried it. Pro tip: try adding the chocolate collagen to coffee for a high-protein mocha latte vibe.

Price Per Serving

Both versions of Orgain collagen peptides sell for $35.99. The unflavored contains 22 servings per container and the chocolate has 17 servings, making the price per serving $1.65 and $2.11, respectively. Orgain’s subscribe and save knocks 15% off the price, bringing it to $1.40 per serving.

Orgain Collagen Peptides mixed into a cup of coffee.

It’s on the expensive end for collagen, so we rated the price a 1 out of 5. Similar grass-fed bovine collagen powders range from $0.90 to $1.60 per serving, such as the ultra-popular Vital Proteins collagen peptides. Depending on your preferences and how you want to use collagen, it may be worth it to pay more for a good-tasting option.

Formulation

The unflavored version contains just one ingredient: grass-fed and pasture-raised collagen peptides. The chocolate also contains cocoa powder, sweeteners, natural flavors, and thickening agents guar gum and xanthan gum.

Supplement Facts label on a container of Orgain Collagen Peptides.

Bovine collagen comes from cattle and contains Type I and Type III collagens1, which happen to be the primary types of collagen found in humans. Different animals contain different types of collagen and each type is associated with different health benefits. Type I has been linked to reversing signs of aging skin and healthier hair and nails, while Type III also supports the structure of skin, internal organs, blood vessels, and muscles.

Because Orgain sources collagen from grass-fed cattle, uses organic ingredients, and is free from artificial ingredients, we rated the formulation 5 out of 5 stars.

Taste and Solubility

Lauren couldn’t resist trying the chocolate version of Orgain’s collagen peptides. She had nothing but good things to say about its taste. “SOOOO good!” she says. “It tastes a lot like a hot cocoa powder mix, with a really rich cocoa flavor.” She mixed it into both cold and hot liquids, including coffee, and loved the taste of each so much she rated it a 5 out 5 for taste.

A woman drinks Orgain Collagen Peptides from a glass.

She rated solubility a 4 out of 5 since there was some minor separation, especially if she took her time enjoying her drink. It wasn’t enough to make drinking it unpleasant, but you may want to keep a spoon nearby to keep stirring if you prefer sipping over chugging.

Side Effects

Our tester didn’t have any negative experiences while taking this collagen and the majority of customer reviews are positive, with no adverse effects reported, so we rate it 5 out of 5 for side effects.

Collagen supplements that contain just collagen peptides, like Orgain’s unflavored collagen peptides, have a low risk of side effects for most healthy adults. Be aware the chocolate version of Orgain collagen peptides is sweetened with stevia and erythritol, which can trigger digestive upset in some people.

Third-Party Testing

The collagen peptides don’t have verified third-party testing. Supplements that have a recognizable independent third-party testing seal, like NSF or Informed Choice, are usually our top picks for safety.

Since the unflavored collagen contains just one ingredient and Orgain has transparent labeling, we think the collagen peptides are likely a safe bet. Orgain is a trusted supplement brand and states their products are internally tested for safety and contaminants, earning them a 4 out of 5 for testing.

Orgain Collagen Peptides Scorecard
GGR collaborated with Ellipse Analytics, an accredited third-party lab, to test more than 150 protein powders. We screened for dozens of factors and rated each product against its peers. Excellent indicates the top 10% of products; Above Average is the top 25% of products; and Meets Standard is the top 50%.

GGR also hired Ellipse Analytics, an independent lab, to perform unbiased third-party testing. We had over 150 protein powders tested for purity and label accuracy, including the unflavored version of Orgain Collagen Peptides. It got a score of “Meets Standard,” which means it passed the rigorous quality standards we tested for.

We here at GGR always recommend purchasing products that have been third-party tested when possible to ensure it is safe from contaminants and the claims on the label are accurate. It is important to remember that even if something like heavy metals are detected during testing, it doesn’t mean that there is a large enough amount to be harmful—it is just useful information to have when making decisions for your long-term health.

Orgain Collagen Peptides vs Transparent Labs Collagen Hydrolysate

Transparent Labs Collagen Hydrolysate

Transparent Labs Grass-Fed Collagen Hydrolysate

GGR Score: 4.7 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

  • No artificial sweetener, colors, or preservatives
  • Formulated with grass-fed bovine collagen peptides
  • Claimed to help eliminate visible signs of skin aging like sagging and wrinkles
  • Made with minimal ingredients

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Worldwide shipping
  • A good amount of positive reviews
  • Easily mixable in cold or hot beverages

Cons

  • Only 10 g of protein per serving
  • Low doses of collagen compared to other brands
  • Doesn’t include vitamin C, which can help with absorption
  • Only comes in 1 flavor

Bottom Line

Transparent Labs Grass-Fed Collagen Hydrolysate is a collagen rich in type I and type III collagen peptides made without artificial sweetener, colors, or preservatives.

Transparent Labs makes some of our favorite third-party tested supplements and their collagen hydrolysate is our pick for the all-around best collagen supplement. Like Orgain, it’s made from grass-fed bovine and there are unflavored or chocolate versions.

Transparent Labs’ chocolate collagen is sweetened with just stevia, which is good news if you’re sensitive to sugar alcohol. We rated Orgain’s chocolate better tasting than the Transparent Labs chocolate collagen, however.

At first glance, Transparent Labs costs less than Orgain but the serving sizes are different. Orgain has you use 2 scoops to get 20 grams of collagen per serving, while Transparent Labs counts 1 scoop as a serving and it has 11 grams of collagen. There’s no standard dose for collagen, but amounts of 2.5 to 12 grams per day2 have been found effective. Both of these products meet that dosage.

Customer Experience

Orgain’s website is easy to shop and all products are backed with a 30-day return policy. Returns are free and both opened and unopened products appear eligible. The return process is really easy. All you need to do is visit the Return & Exchange center via their website, enter your order number and Orgain will generate a pre-paid return label. You can request a refund, store credit, or exchange.

Orgain frequently runs sales and offers promo codes for those on their email list. Customer reviews detail positive experiences with customer service and have had issues resolved quickly. An Amazon customer wrote their tub of collagen contained fewer servings than advertised and promptly received a replacement.

Ordering Orgain Collagen Peptides

Orgain supplements are accessible at retailers nationwide, so you may be able to find the collagen peptides in person at stores like Walgreens and CVS. You can also order them online from the Orgain site, Amazon, Target, and Walmart.

To order from Orgain or Amazon, you’ll choose between the unflavored and chocolate collagen, choose a one-time order or subscription, and then follow directions to check out. I was quoted $9.95 to ship a one-time order from Orgain, but you can get free shipping if you subscribe, spend $75, or order through Amazon Prime.

Customer Reviews

Orgain collagen peptides appear to be a top seller on Amazon with nearly 34,000 reviews and an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. The product has also been reviewed 563 times on the Orgain website with an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars.

With those ratings, it’s no surprise that most customers feel this is a good product. Here are some highlights, according to Amazon customers:

As for negatives, some Amazon customers report trouble getting the collagen to fully dissolve in cold liquid and that they can taste the unflavored version. “It’s not a bad taste, but you can definitely taste it,” wrote one reviewer.

Final Verdict of Our Orgain Collagen Peptides Review

If you can find the chocolate collagen on sale, we say go for it! It’s versatile, tastes awesome hot or cold, and adds 19 grams of valuable protein to your day. If the price is a turn off, save the chocolate for when you’re craving a treat and use the unflavored version in your daily routine.

  • The chocolate collagen contains fewer servings than the unflavored, despite having the same size canisters and price.
  • The chocolate is sweetened with stevia and erythritol, a sugar alcohol.
  • The unflavored version contains no added ingredients.
  • For added nutrition, Orgain makes the same collagen peptides with added superfood powders.

Orgain Collagen Peptides: FAQs

What do Orgain collagen peptides do for you?

Orgain collagen peptides contain Type I and Type III collagen, which have been linked to hair growth, stronger nails, more youthful looking skin, and joint support. There’s also some evidence collagen peptides support gut health. Each serving of Orgain collagen peptides contains 18 grams of protein, which can support muscle health.

Is there a downside to taking collagen peptides?

Collagen peptides are considered safe and are well tolerated by most adults. Some collagen supplements contain other ingredients, like vitamins, minerals, and herbs, which can increase the risk of side effects and/or interfere with other supplements or medications. A supplement that contains just collagen, like Orgain Collagen Peptides, is unlikely to cause issues. Since collagen is derived from animals, individuals following vegetarian and vegan diets should avoid it.

How often should I take Orgain collagen peptides?

For best results, you should take collagen peptides consistently for 2 to 3 months and then assess how it’s working for you. One serving of Orgain collagen peptides is two scoops, so you can take it once a day or split the serving and take one scoop in the morning and one in the evening.
