Although we can’t completely bulletproof the signs of aging, we can take control of many factors to slow them down. Among these factors is the growing interest in collagen1, the body’s most abundant protein.

Collagen primarily consists of glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline—amino acids known as the building blocks of proteins. These amino acids are responsible for the potential benefits of collagen protein powder Bulletproof claims to provide, such as supporting skin, hair, gut, and joint health.

However, Bulletproof’s flavored options may include more than just the expected collagen and may not be appropriate for everyone. Find out if it suits you in this Bulletproof Collagen Peptides Review, where GGR Director of Content Kate Meier and I, a registered dietitian, share our firsthand experiences and expert insights. Let’s get into it!

A Quick Look at Bulletproof Collagen Peptides

Bulletproof made a name for itself with Bulletproof Coffee—a blend of coffee, MCT oil, and grass-fed butter—thanks to founder Dave Asprey, who believes that taking charge of your health begins with how you feel. This high-fat coffee elixir pioneered Bulletproof’s product line, which now includes collagen peptides as powders, protein bars, and, unsurprisingly, coffee (truly on-brand).

An image of Bulletproof collagen peptides being scooped

The best-seller Bulletproof Collagen Peptides may support healthy skin, bones, and joints, thanks to the types I and III collagen it contains. The powder is versatile: mix it into Bulletproof Coffee (as Bulletproof recommends), blend it into smoothies, or add it to your favorite recipes.

Before adding it to any recipe, however, consider these four “C” factors:

Before You Buy

  • Calories: Chocolate and Vanilla flavors have almost double the calories (mostly from dietary fat) per serving compared to Unflavored, despite supplying the same 20 grams of collagen.
  • Contains coconut: Individuals with a coconut allergy should avoid the flavored options.
  • Convenience: Unflavored is available in single-serving packets for on-the-go convenience.
  • Cost: All 17-ounce containers cost $43.95, but Chocolate and Vanilla only offer 15 servings, unlike the 25 servings in Unflavored, which raises the cost per serving.

Is Bulletproof Collagen Peptides Worth It?

Costing as much as $2.93 per serving, Bulletproof Collagen Peptides is on the higher end compared to many of the best collagen supplements. However, its well-received feedback and popularity may make it worth spending for some people.

Great for:

  • Anyone wanting to support hair, skin, nail, bone, joint, and gut health
  • Individuals looking for a low-sugar, keto-friendly collagen
  • Consumers who prioritize ethical sourcing

Not recommended for:

  • People seeking a protein specifically for muscle growth (whey protein is better suited for this purpose)
  • Anyone who follows a strict plant-based or vegan diet
  • Those wanting to reduce or avoid added fats and artificial sweeteners in flavored options

Experience Using Bulletproof Collagen Peptides

GGR Director of Content Kate Meier, CPT, USAW-L1, CF-L1, tested Bulletproof Collagen Peptides and highlighted a positive experience: “By far, the best collagen I or my friend, Kathleen, have ever tried. I actually look forward to putting this in my coffee because you can’t detect the taste!”

We’re off to a smooth start, but let’s see if the momentum continues.

Price Per Serving

A 25-serving tub of Unflavored Bulletproof Collagen Peptides costs $43.95 ($1.76 per serving) or $35.16 ($1.41 per serving) with a subscription. The Chocolate and Vanilla flavors are priced similarly at $43.95 for a one-time purchase, but they provide only 15 servings, resulting in a cost of $2.93 per serving, or $2.34 with a subscription.

Additional savings are available in its 42.3-ounce container ($1.28 per serving for Unflavored and $2.14 for flavors) or three 17.6-ounce packs ($1.58 per serving for Unflavored and $2.64 for flavors). The most economical choice is the subscription for the 42.3-ounce Unflavored container, which lowers the cost to $1.14 per serving.

Despite these reduced costs from the product’s regular price, it’s still higher than competitors, earning a price value rating of 2 out of 5.

Formulation

Bulletproof’s Unflavored Collagen Peptide Powder exclusively contains bovine collagen peptides from hormone-free, pasture-raised cows. Collagen peptides (hydrolyzed collagen) may benefit various body systems—like skin2, joint3, gut4, and bone health5—and comorbidities6 such as diabetes and osteoporosis.

The Unflavored powder provides 18 grams of protein and 20 grams of hydrolyzed collagen per serving, which falls within the general daily recommendation of 2.5 to 15 grams7. It contains type I and III collagen: Type I makes up about 90 percent of collagen in the body and is primarily found in skin, bone, teeth, tendons, ligaments, and organs. Type III, on the other hand, is most commonly found in skin, muscle, and blood vessels.

Bulletproof Collagen Peptides Supplement Facts

Chocolate and Vanilla flavors are available but include additional ingredients—like MCT oil and coconut creamer powders—that increase the nutritional value of calories, carbohydrates, and fats, which could deter consumers with specific dietary needs and goals. The flavors are also artificially sweetened with erythritol, a sugar alcohol that may cause gastrointestinal side effects, particularly in individuals with digestive conditions.

The extra (and potentially unnecessary) ingredients in the flavored formulations, such as MCT oil that doesn’t necessarily enhance collagen supplementation (unlike vitamin C), result in a 3 out of 5 rating for formulation. This rating also reflects how it compares to competitors who provide flavored options with fewer and lower-fat ingredients.

Taste and Solubility

Kate tried the Unflavored option and told us, “The unflavored is TRULY unflavored, and you can’t detect it at all. It’s amazing.” Kate noted that the collagen dissolved almost entirely after trying both hot coffee and a cold drink.

Another GGR tester shares a similar experience: “I even put it in a cup before my coffee once, turned on the Keurig, and then walked away and didn’t stir it. When I came back, it had completely dissolved. I thought it would be clumped in the bottom, but it wasn’t. It mixes so well with no clumps.”

Given the glowing feedback, we rate Bulletproof Collagen Peptides a perfect 5-star rating for its taste and solubility.

Side Effects

Kate experienced no adverse side effects using Bulletproof Collagen, and collagen supplements8 are widely regarded as safe, earning a 5 out of 5 rating in this category.

Third-Party Testing

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate dietary supplements, so we prioritize products tested by third parties. Bulletproof offers transparent labeling and notes its collagen testing standards, such as batch-testing for heavy metals.

However, Bulletproof does not explicitly mention third-party certifications, such as Informed Choice or NSF Certified for Sport, resulting in a 2 out of 5 rating in this category.

GGR worked with accredited lab Ellipse Analytics to get over 150 protein powders tested for label accuracy and purity. Overall the Unflavored version of Bulletproof Collagen Peptides scored in the top 50% of products tested, so it Meets Standard. It’s important to note that just because a product tested higher for something doesn’t mean it’s not safe to take according to directions. For more information on the meaning of these criteria, check out our Independent Supplement Testing Glossary

Bulletproof Collagen Peptides Lab scorecard
GGR collaborated with Ellipse Analytics, an accredited third-party lab, to test more than 150 protein powders. We screened for dozens of factors and rated each product against its peers. Excellent indicates the top 10% of products; Above Average is the top 25% of products; and Meets Standard is the top 50%.

Bulletproof Collagen Peptides vs Transparent Labs Collagen Hydrolysate

Transparent Labs Collagen

Transparent Labs Grass-Fed Collagen Hydrolysate

product image
GGR Score: 4.7

Product Highlights

  • No artificial sweetener, colors, or preservatives
  • Formulated with grass-fed bovine collagen peptides
  • Claimed to help eliminate visible signs of skin aging like sagging and wrinkles
  • Made with minimal ingredients

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Worldwide shipping
  • A good amount of positive reviews
  • Easily mixable in cold or hot beverages

Cons

  • Only 10 g of protein per serving
  • Low doses of collagen compared to other brands
  • Doesn’t include vitamin C, which can help with absorption
  • Only comes in 1 flavor

Bottom Line

Transparent Labs Grass-Fed Collagen Hydrolysate is a collagen rich in type I and type III collagen peptides made without artificial sweetener, colors, or preservatives.

Transparent Labs Collagen is another option containing bovine collagen, but it distinguishes itself from Bulletproof in several key aspects:

  • Serving size: One scoop compared to Bulletproof’s two-scoop serving
  • Formulation: Its Chocolate collagen offers a tidier and “cleaner” ingredients list, including the natural sweetener stevia and cocoa powder
  • Collagen content: Provides 9 grams less collagen per serving, although adding another scoop makes them almost identical
  • Calories and macronutrients: Macros are comparable to Unflavored, although Transparent Labs Chocolate provides fewer calories, carbs, and no fat, even when doubling the serving
  • Flavor options: Unflavored and Chocolate flavors are available, but it does not offer Vanilla like Bulletproof does
  • Third-party testing: Certified by Informed-Choice for purity and the absence of banned substances
  • Cost: Chocolate is more economical, but for Unflavored you need to double the serving to reach 22 grams of collagen (comparable to Bulletproof’s 20 grams per serving)

The decision is yours, but Transparent Labs might suit you if you have a coconut allergy, value third-party testing, and seek a product with little to no additives like oils and artificial sweeteners. Check out the accompanying table and our Transparent Labs Collagen Hydrolysate Review for a comprehensive comparison.

  • Lacks full transparency regarding its third-party testing certifications.

Bulletproof Collagen Protein: FAQs

What does Bulletproof collagen do?

Bulletproof collagen provides bovine collagen peptides rich in types I and III collagen, which may enhance hair, skin, joints, and bone support, among other benefits.

Is there a downside to taking collagen peptides?

While generally safe and potentially effective, collagen peptides lack the essential amino acid tryptophan and might lead individuals to neglect other important habits for maintaining collagen. Therefore, collagen should be complemented with other high-protein foods and supported by healthy habits like smoking cessation.

Do collagen peptides really work?

Research shows that collagen supplementation can work and be beneficial, particularly collagen peptides and hydrolyzed collagen1. For instance, a 2023 meta-analysis2 suggests that hydrolyzed collagen can improve skin hydration and elasticity. Collagen peptides may also support the health of joints, hair, nails, tendons, and bones.
