We’re Not “Green” to Powdered Greens

As fitness and nutrition professionals, we understand the importance of getting enough fruits and veggies and understand just how beneficial they are for meeting health, fitness, and wellness goals.

As a team of registered dietitians, certified nutrition coaches, certified personal trainers, CrossFit Level 1 trainers, and other fitness experts, we’ve tested over 40 different powdered greens supplements. We know exactly what to look for when searching for the best greens powder!

Amanda Capritto, CPT, CES, CNC, CF-L1, CSNC, has tested more than her fair share of powdered greens and shares her honest opinion of Organifi Green Juice here.

As a vegan registered dietitian, I also provide my thoughts on its value as a nutrition supplement and examine who it would most benefit.

A Quick Look at Organifi Green Juice

Organifi Green Juice is a USDA Organic “superfood” green juice supplement made from a variety of powdered greens, blue-green algae, vegetables, and spices containing a plethora of vitamins and minerals.

Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb, is a key ingredient used to market this Athletic Greens alternative for weight loss, cortisol and stress reduction, and detoxification.

It’s vegan, non-GMO, and free from glyphosate residues, making it popular among health-minded consumers. It’s also soy-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free, making it allergen-friendly.

Is Organifi Green Juice Worth It?

Drinking Organifi Green Juice is an easy, convenient way to reap the health benefits of additional vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, but it isn’t meant to take the place of whole fruits and vegetables.

Whole plant foods contain dietary fiber, which is essential for bowel regularity, regulation of blood sugar levels, and immune function, so powdered greens supplements are best used as an addition to an already balanced diet.

For most people, this green drink probably isn’t worth the exorbitant price of $2.67 per serving and likely won’t be more beneficial than eating a balanced diet rich in whole plant-based foods.

Great for:

  • People who want an organic greens blend for extra vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants
  • Those who struggle to eat enough vegetables, especially leafy greens
  • People who need to follow a low-fiber/low-residue diet for medical reasons

Not recommended for:

  • Replacing whole fruits and vegetables in the diet
  • People on a tight budget
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women

Experience Using Organifi Green Juice

Certified sports nutrition coach Amanda Capritto has tried plenty of powdered greens supplements in the past and was happy to test Organifi Green Juice for us. Mixing a scoop with water or fruit juice was quick, easy, and surprisingly tasty considering the overly grassy flavor of many green juices.

Price Per Serving

There’s no getting around the fact that this product is pricey, coming in at $2.67 a serving.

Looking down at a hand holding a glass of Organifi Green Juice.

While this isn’t surprising considering the organic ingredients and third-party testing, it contributes to the unfortunate trend of “superfood” products being out of reach for the average consumer.

If you prioritize convenience and the experience of using supplements with luxurious ingredients, this product might be worth it to you. For most people, however, your money would likely be better spent on whole fruits and vegetables and using your own herbs and spices when cooking.

We gave it a 1 out of 5 for price.

Formulation

This powdered green juice contains a “Greens” blend consisting of wheat grass, moringa leaf, spirulina, chlorella, and matcha, in addition to an anti-inflammatory “Superfood” blend made from apple, coconut, ashwagandha, vitamin C-rich lemon, red beetroot, and turmeric likely meant to help support the immune system.

While this seems impressive, Amanda felt it was “really expensive for what it is, particularly considering that the two blends are proprietary blends and we can’t tell how much of each ingredient is in there.”

It also “seems lacking compared to other options, many of which contain more whole food sourced powders,” she noted.

Close up of a tall glass of Organifi Greens Juice next to the bag with the Supplement Facts label showing.

There are no probiotics, which you can find in other greens powders, and although a prebiotic fiber powder is included, there’s no mention of what type of fiber this is or how much is present in a serving.

Ashwagandha, a popular Ayurvedic adaptogen, is included to help reduce food cravings and boost weight loss by lowering cortisol levels, a marker of stress, in the body.

While ashwagandha has been shown to help improve sleep quality1 in people with insomnia and reduce perceived stress and anxiety2, studies are limited and conclusions about the efficacy of ashwagandha are still preliminary.

Because the formulation left us with so much uncertainty, we rated it a 2.75 out of 5.

Taste and Solubility

Drinking leafy greens may not sound very appetizing, but Amanda was a fan. She especially loved the tangy, tart Crisp Apple flavor. She said: “The Crisp Apple is pretty tasty! This is one of the better greens powders I’ve tried, taste-wise. It kind of tastes like those bottled green juices you can pick up from Whole Foods or Sprouts.”

She was equally impressed with how well the powder mixed with water, noting “no chunks or floaties and only minimal settling.”

Thanks to the refreshing flavor and great mixability, we rated this green juice powder a 4.5 out of 5 for both taste and solubility.

Side Effects

There are anecdotal reports of people experiencing mild digestive distress, such as nausea, bloating, and diarrhea when using greens powders, which may be due to certain ingredients like wheatgrass and herbal extracts.

Fortunately, Amanda had no such side effects, earning this product a 5 out of 5.

Third-Party Testing

We gave the product a 4.75 out of 5 here thanks to the fact that Organifi tests their products for heavy metals, pathogens, chemical pesticides, and other contaminants and posts the Certificates of Analysis for each batch directly on their website.

Since the FDA doesn’t regulate dietary supplements, third-party testing is key for giving consumers peace of mind about product safety.

That said, we found it somewhat ironic that Organifi boasts a “commitment to transparency” but uses proprietary blends instead of disclosing the amounts of individual ingredients.

Customer Reviews

Organifi Green Juice is rated very well on the brand’s website, with a 4.8-out-of-5-star rating from over 2,000 customer reviews.

Many people were pleasantly surprised with the minty, slightly sweet flavor, saying it tastes great even when mixed with water, although some preferred it with juice.

Amazon reviews are slightly more mixed with an average rating of 4.3 stars. Here most people also love the flavor, but opinions differ on how well the powder mixes in liquid and whether the product makes any difference in energy levels or mental clarity. Some were also disappointed in how much air was present in the bag, making the packaging seem somewhat wasteful.

Final Verdict of Our Organifi Green Juice Review

If you’re looking for an organic, glyphosate-free green juice powder and don’t mind paying premium prices, Organifi Green Juice could be a good option.

However, its use of proprietary greens and superfood blends makes it difficult to know just how much of each ingredient you’re actually getting. Its sky-high price also makes it unaffordable for most consumers, and their claims about detoxifying the body and boosting weight loss are half-baked.

You’ll likely be satisfied with it if:

  • You want an easy, tasty way to boost your intake of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants
  • You use it as a supplement to an already balanced diet
  • You have ample room in your budget to accommodate the price
  • You like having ashwagandha in your juice blend
