PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

Although Tonal doesn’t provide the same tactile sensation that gripping a knurled barbell does, this smart home gym shouldn’t be underestimated. With more than 170 moves, 200 pounds of resistance, and a range of full-body exercises, it’s perfect for anyone looking for an all-in-one workout system, those in small spaces, or anyone interested in working out with digital weights.

You may look at the 200 pounds of resistance and scoff, but it should be noted that digital resistance is much harder compared to your typical barbell. Your stabilizing muscles have to kick into high gear, and lifting even 100 pounds will feel much more challenging than you might think. Not sure where to start? Tonal will put you through an assessment to determine the best weight for you.

Our only beef with Tonal is that you have to pay a monthly subscription cost of $50 on top of the overall cost of the machine, so it’s not the most budget-friendly home gym. But, it is one of the most effective.

Pros & Cons

What we like about the product...

  1. AI gets to know you and makes weight adjustments for you
  2. Lift up to 200 pounds in digital resistance (much different from free weights)
  3. All-in-one gym that takes up minimal space
  4. AI assesses your form and gives real-time cuing
  5. Access to on-demand and live classes
  6. 30-day trial period

What needs improvement...

  1. High initial price tag
  2. Accessories cost extra and are pretty crucial to your workouts
  3. 12-month initial subscription required (and an additional cost)
  4. 200 pounds in resistance might not be enough for heavy lifters

Product Summary & Specs

Looking for a complete home gym that fits in a compact space? The Tonal smart home gym offers 200 pounds of resistance, more than 170 moves, and a range of full-body exercises. Plus, the AI gets to know you as a lifter the more you use it, so the workouts will be customized to your needs.

Tonal may be effective, but it’s not budget-friendly. The machine sells for close to $3,000 (which does include professional installation), but you still have to pay a $50 monthly subscription fee on top of that.

    The Bottom Line

A complete smart home gym that offers versatility in a compact piece of equipment, but at a high price.
